No one would have believed, in the early years of the 21st Centaury, that human affairs were being watched from the timeless worlds of space. No one could have dreamed that humans were being securitized, as someone with a microscope studies creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. Few men even considered the possibility of life on other planets, and yet, across the gulf of space, minds immeasurably superior to theirs, regarded the Earth with envious eyes, and slowly, by surely, they drew their plans against them…
Prologue
[Somewhere on Mars]
‘Fellow Elders, you understand the importance of this meeting? Are situation grows more desperate by the day.’
‘Mars is no longer able to sustain life. Our attempts to maintain the biosphere are exhausted.’
‘We have been left with no option but to look to other planets in solar system to meet our needs. Our search has lead us to attack and conquer Earth’
‘The planet is young, green and full of life. The atmosphere will be uncomfortable, but bearable.’
‘The problem of course will be the humans. They have developed primitive intelligence.’
‘Their civilization is based on conflict and conquest. A swift and decisive attack on their Social and political capitals should prevent any real resistance.’
‘We have had very little need for our weapons and attack pods for thousands of years, however, improvements to our current technologies will be made available.’
‘Let us prepare the invasion!’
12th of August, 2005
’At midnight, on the 12th of August a huge mass of luminous gas erupted from Mars and sped towards Earth. Across 200 million miles of void, came the first of the missiles that were to bring so much calamity to Earth. And this would how it would be for the next 10 nights. A flare spurting out of Mars. Bright Green, drawing a green mist behind it. A beautiful, but somehow, disturbing sight…
OOC: Respond to the flares. For example, shooting stars whatever.

Astronomy Observatory 6 miles out of a village in the Highlands of Scotland:
David Pearson had just finished taking positions of various space objects through his telescope; neatly noting them down in various notebooks with a pencil. He pulled his jacket closer as the cold Scottish night seeped into his bones. The white observatory sat on top of a hill, literally in the middle of nowhere. A mad Scotsman had built it in the fifties, taking advantage of some of the least polluted air in the United Kingdom. After he had died, leaving no children, it had been left derelict.
Then in the early 21st Century David moved in. Originally from London, he had grown sick of the busy city life and left, along with his life savings. The house prices of London allowed him to buy a small cottage, and use the rest and his savings on renovating the old observatory. He had always been fascinated by the stars, part of the reason why he hated London.
So when it wasn't cloudy, David watched the skies. When it was cloudy, he wrote book reviews for a number of magazines and other publications. The wonders of modern technology, meant the reviews were e-mailed straight to the editor's desk.
Now finished with his readings he began to scan the skies. Earlier, in the village pub, someone had mentioned a huge asteroid coming towards Earth. David was not usually interested by the locals' conversations, and the locals weren't interested in him; in fact they disliked his English presence. David almost kept on returning to the pub in spite of them.
After asking where the asteroid hadn't been seen, the person who'd reported it told him, and David realised it was roughly in the same direction as Mars. He didn't believe it was an asteroid, and was probably some kind of military aircraft being tested, based at the airfield some fifty miles west of the village. Besides, an asteroid would have been spotted way before it was visible to the naked eye.
Yet, the huge multi-coloured object hurtling towards Earth filled his telescope sight. He blinked and looked again. Where the hell did that come from? he thought. He was a rational man, but, it seemed to have come from Mars. Blood pumped through his veins as he logged onto an astronomy internet forum, logging its position.
----------------------------------------
Somewhere in the 50 mile vicinity of Glennorag Air Station:
David wasn't the only person watching the skies. Sergeant James Sharpe of the Queen's British Army stared at the sky.
"Sir, that's not anything I've seen before." said Corporal Michaels, also staring at the sky. They were on exercise in the Highlands, and presently on top of a hill.
"Same here." replied the Sergeant.
"It looks like an asteroid sir." Private Douglas ventured.
"That's what I was thinking. We'd better get back to HQ. We don't want a bollocking for being stupid about nothing. But this doesn't look like nothing."
The Sergeant looked at his map, changing direction, marching double time with his other three team mates behind him.
----------------------------------------
Glennorag Manor 2 miles north west of the village.
Sarah MacDonald, heir to the Glennorag Manor and Estate, sat at her desk in her bedroom. She was going over the estate's accounts. She was bored, her Father had died recently, a bombastic man who found his daughter's presence uncomfortable. She wasn't worried about that, and had escaped from the dreary place as soon as she could, getting a job in the fast line of modern society. Then her Father had died, and she'd had to leave her job to manage the estate. She would have paid someone to do it, but the terms of the inheritance stated that she had to manage it personally for two years to recieve it. Her Father couldn't have a straight conversation with her, but in the occasional communication they had shared he'd managed to figure out a lot of her character. He wasn't stupid.
That was the irritating thing, he'd even left the estate in good order, with no fantastic debts that she needed to pay off and then have to turn the place around. At least she would be doing something.
She looked up and stared, there was large dot in the sky. It was too big for a planet. The distant dot held her gaze for several moments before she looked away. What was it? There was only one thing she could do at the moment. Jumping up she put on her shoes, grabbed her jacket and car keys, went to the car. At a time like this, there was only one place to be.
The village pub.

The Kremlin
Moscow
Russian Federation
“Dimitri!”
Dimitri Valov, Special Advisor to the President, turned as he heard his name called. He was a little irritated at the interruption; he was currently hurrying to get some briefing papers to the President before he addressed the Duma later that evening.
The irritation subsided quickly as Dimitri smiled to see the Marshal Rossiyskoy Federatsii, Piotr Yeltsin walking towards him along the palace corridor. He respectfully waited for the man to fall in step before continuing along the carpeted passageway. “Good evening, Marshal. I hope you are well?”
Yeltsin nodded, adjusting his hat. His military uniform jangled with uncountable medals and ribbons for service to the state. Coming on seventy years old, Piotr had served in the Red Army during World War Two, and was a veteran of many a conflict. Politics, however, was one conflict he did not usually get into, which was why Dimitri was a little surprised to see the Marshal of the Russian Federation that night, and even more surprised at his next question. “The President addressing the Duma tonight?”
Dimitri nodded, his experienced political mind switching on like a light bulb. “Yes, he is,” the man answered wearily.
Marshal Yeltsin nodded, a little uncomfortable in this role. He cleared his throat. “Good, good, I just wanted to ensure that – well, that is to say remind the President politely…” the man trailed off.
Dimitri smiled a little and threw the man a metaphorical rope. “The President is aware of the boost that the military requires in its funding and is working towards that.” It was a standard line, but the veteran officer seemed relieved to have an answer.
Dimitri glanced at his folder of papers and sighed. “If you’ll excuse me, Marshal.” He nodded politely to the man before taking a turn down the corridor and towards the President’s location.

Nikolaeyev (Lvov)
HENHOUSE Ballistic Missile Early Warning Radar Station
Ukraine
Nikolaeyev (Lvov) Station was one of the few EWS radar sites that were allowed to be maintained by the Russian Federation on foreign soil after the break-up of the Soviet Union. Manned by Russian Personnel and linked to the People’s Air Defence Command in Russia, the station was one of five that cast a vigil across Western Europe, looking for missile threats from what was once a Cold War enemy.
Now however, the threat was practically obsolete. The stations that once protected the Soviet Union stared out at new friends and allies that were unlikely to start a nuclear war in the 21st century. Still, the radar crews maintained their watchful eyes in the service of their country.
Well, mostly.
“I bid four.”
Kapitan Igor Villanov, Commanding Officer of N (L) station, threw some chips into the centre of the table where the four Radar operators sat around playing poker. Mladshy Leytenants Ralin and Dobrov groaned in unison and folded grudgingly. Ralin stood and stretched, leaving the table and walking across to his Airborne Monitoring Station.
“Where you going?” Igor called. He was staring intently at Praporshchik Welin, the lowest ranking person in the room but the only one who seemed to have the confidence to sit against Kapitan.
Ralin grinned at his Commanding Officer as he slouched into his operating chair and stared at the radar screen in front of him. “Well, one of us should be keeping an eye on the evil capitalists.”
Dobrov chuckled, leaning back at the Poker table. “The evil capitalists are over here, Ralin.”
That brought a laugh from the room, whilst Kapitan Villanov looked directly at the serviceman. “I could order you to fold, y’know,” he said in a matter-of-fact voice.
Welin nodded. “Yes Sir, you could.” He dropped his cards to the table. “Royal Flush.”
Dobrov laughed aloud, clapping his hands together. Igor looked mortified as he stared down at his four of a kind. “Damn,” he muttered, dropping his cards. “I’m not on top form today.”
Ralin chuckled, looking around the side of his chair. “You should quite whilst you’re ahead, Kapitan,” he called. “Set a good example to the lower ranks.” Igor’s only response was a rude noise.
Dobrov began dealing out cards again, and Ralin turned and looked back at the radar screen, still grinning. Then, his grin faded to a frown as several blue circles appeared on his radar screen. He leant forward, typing into the keyboard to run a diagnostic on the equipment. When that came back okay, he started sweating. Typing in a reboot command, he allowed his radar screen to refresh. The blue circles still maintained their track down from the atmosphere.
Ralin swore under his breath and quickly replaced his headset. “I have four, correction, five Unknowns, passing through peak altitude and increasing speed.”
The men at the table scrambled to their feet. Igor knocked over the table as he ran across the room to his own screen. Quickly leaning over it, he placed his headset back on and spoke calmly, cursing his lack of professionalism at this time. “All stations, run equipment checks.”
Ralin had already done his own, but the others quickly went about it. When the results came back green, Villanov contacted the second Nikolaeyev station for radar confirmation. The blue circles lazily floated down the screen as they gained speed. At least two were tracking towards the Russian Federation, whilst the others were heading for continental Europe. Villanov exhaled sharply, rubbing his face and looking at the screen.
“Track trajectory and point of origin,” he called.
Dobrov was the Tracking Operator. He ran the trajectory arc through the computer and extended the ballistic semi-circle back to its likely point of origin.
“Impacts targeted for Leningrad and Moscow, Kapitan,” he called. “Trajectory origin…” he paused, looking at the results. “98 percent chance they came from the Minuteman fields at Grand Forks.”
Igor stood in stunned silence for a moment. The Americans? Why the hell are they attacking?
“Okay,” he said, sitting in his seat. “Mark them as hostile.”
The three radar operators acknowledged over their headsets and each typed a command into their consoles. The five blue circles changed to red crosses, and the trajectory tracks displayed on the screen. Igor keyed in the call number for the Peoples Air Defence Command Headquarters and adjusted the headset microphone.
“This is Nikolaeyev Lvov Station calling Moscow…”
OOC: Second part to come later. Don’t worry, I’m not going to nuke the USA, but the radar systems would go ballistic when these things came into contact.

The Astronomy Forum of the ESA had revealed that there were more than one of these asteroids. There were two over Russia, and others over the rest of Europe. Speculative theories ran like wild fire. David couldn't do anything but sit back and read them, hoping for some shred of a reasonable idea. But there were none.

The Land Rover Discovery skidded to a halt, ABS kicking in on the damp road. Sarah shoved the vehicle in reverse and did two point turn into a field gate. This thing was coming from space, and there was the guy in the observatory, she doubted he'd be heading for the pub.
Traction control kicked in as she accelerated in the opposite direction.

OOC: The first pod will land in Scotland. The Second in Russia. I'll decide the rest when more people post
IC: Then came the night the first missile approached Earth. It was thought ot be an ordinary falling star but the next day, there was a huge Crater... and people came to examine what lay there...
On Mars
'The tenth and final pod has been launched. Given that the launch time was 1 Earth Day, the first should have already arrived.'
'Contact has been made with the first pod...'
Several Miles South East of Edinburgh
'[i]...First pod, this is the Chief elder, report your status[/u]'
'The Earth's Atmosphere was penetrated without incident. We have landed roughly 27 Miles off the intended target point. The pod has cooled down enough to begin the unscrewing. Shall I commence?'
'Yes. Continue with plan but do not attack with Fighting Machines until you are given the signal.'
'Understood'
Suddenly the top of the cylinder began moving..., rotating, unscrewing. and people feared there was a man inside trying to escape. They rushed to the cylinder, but the intense heat stopped before they could burn themselves on the metal...
OOC:Khwarezmia, Feel free to gather around the cylinder!

Sarah arrived just as the Cylinder broke through the outer layers of the atmosphere. David was standing on the balcony of the observatory shielding his eyes with his hand as the huge fireball plummeted earthwards.
"Hey, what is it?" yelled Sarah.
"Don't know." replied David with a shrug.
"Is it an asteroid?"
"No. It is too small. It would have burnt up by now."
-----------------------------
The four soldiers stood watching the Cylinder on a hill. They had not yet reach the base.
"Better than any fireworks I've ever seen." said Corporal Michaels.
"Yup." was the only response.
"Looks like it's gonna land over there." the Corporal continued.
"Yup."
-----------------------------
The Cylinder landed in the Glennorag village High Street.
After the dust had settled, the first villager poked his head out of the door. He walked slowly towards the huge cylinder, holding an ancient Claymore out in front of him. The rest of the pub's occupants filed quietly into the street, fanning out.
"See Doug, I told you it was aliens!"
"How d'you know it's aliens, it's just a block of metal."
"It's not an asteroid though."
"Shh! It's opening!" hissed the Publican, reasserting his grip on the Claymore.

In Scotland
Six foot of shining screw projected when, suddenly, the lid fell off. Two luminious, disc like eues, appeared above the rim. A huge rounded bulk, larger than a bear, rose up slowly, glistening like wet leather. It's lipless mouth quivered and slabbered. And Snake-like tenticles rived as the clumsy body breathed and pulsated.
The creature retreated back inside the cylinder. A few young men crept closer to the pit. A tall funnel rose, and an invisible ray of heat lept from man to man; and there was a bright glare; as each was instantly turned to fire. Every building, tree and bush became a mass of flames, at the touch of this savage, unearthly heat-ray!
Back on Mars
'Contact has been re-established with the first pod'
'What is your status?'
'I released the seal as instructed. When I had done so, a large crowd of humans had gathered around the pod. The presence of these... disgusting creatures reminded me of our own vulerability. So, I cleansed the area...'
'Start construction of the fighting machines now, but await our signal before you attack. Mars out'
OOC: Khwarezmia, you may start to gather troops around, but do not attack. Feel free to respond to being attacked. I recommend you believe that the Martians were just 'Scared'

"What th-" was all that was said before every villager lay dead.
Inside one of the burning buildings, a teenage girl watched as the pub exploded scattering glass everywhere. She grabbed her phone. It was unlikely anyone would believe her. She dialled 999.
"What service do you require?"
"Um, the police, no the army."
"Okay dear, and what is the emergency?"
"Um... aliens."
"Yes dear. Now you shouldn't ring 999 about aliens okay?"
"Sorry..."
A sob escaped from the girl's mouth as she sat back. Smoke began to filter through the door. Then her phone lit up and began to vibrate. Gingerly she picked it up.
"Did you just ring 999?"
"Yes." replied the girl.
"Where are you?"
"Glennorag village."
"Thank you, now stay calm."
The phone went dead. She almost laughed at her predicament, stay calm the bloody house was burning down. Only one thing to do. She took a deep breath and ran.
Flames licked at her as she sprinted across the landing. The window appeared through the smoke and she jumped through it. Flames burst out from behind her, and she landed in a bush.
Holding her broken arm she rolled over and over on the lawn and exstinguished the fires on her clothes and hair. When she was satisfied that they were out. She lay cradling her arm, crying silently.
----------------------------------
Sergeant Sharpe held his rifle to his shoulder as he made his way through the brurning village. Vaulting silently over a fence he landed in a garden. A girl was crying on the lawn.
"Michaels, you and Smith get a stretcher, we have a casualty." he ordered.
"Sir." was the reply.
He and his squad continued through the village.
----------------------------------
David and Sarah were stopped short of the village by a soldier. They turned the Discovery around and parked it a little way up the road. When they came back they could do nothing but watch.
Soldiers stood watching the cylinder intently. They could see a squad making their way through the burning village. A helicopter hovered overhead, and tanks were being emplaced overlooking the cylinder.
"Were there any survivors?" Sarah asked the sentry.
"Not as far as we know."
Sarah suddenly realised how close she had come to death.
