In its air-to-surface role, the F-16 can fly more than 500nm (860km), deliver its weapons with great accuracy, even during non-visual bombing conditions, defend itself against attack by enemy aircraft, and then return to its base.

8. F-117A Nighthawk
Type: single-seat, single engined strike fighter
Weight: empty approximately 30,000lbs; maximum takeoff: 52,500lbs

Description: The designation “stealth fighter” is something of a misnomer since the F-117A is essentially a strike aircraft designed to fly close to a target at subsonic speed, launch a guided missile or “smart” bomb, and then turn away for its return to base; it would be no match for a traditional fighter in terms of speed or agility. To avoid such confrontations, it normally operates at night, when conditions make it virtually undetectable.
Price: $45 million ($45,000,000)
