Here at Colonial Airlines we offer three basic types of airship - the Sparrow, the Eagle and the Albatross. This section gives the details for their basic design. The next section details their variants that we offer for sale.

The Sparrow

This is the basic small airship used throughout Ollieland by Colonial Airlines. There are many pivately owned Sparrows throughout Ollieland and it is used by many companies for transport.

Balloon Size - 30m x 10m x 10m
Gondala Size - 10m x 5m x 3m (single deck)
Lifting Gas - Helium
Propulsion - 2 x rear mounted 1.5m propellors
Power - 2 x 1500v rechargeable batteries
Air Crew - 3 (Captain/Pilot, Co-Pilot/Navigator, Engineer)
Ground Crew - 20
Range - 2500 miles

The Eagle

The workhorse of the nation, this airship is used by Colonial Airlines and all the branches of Ollielands military. The Eagle uses a new type of gas developed by our own R & D team. Hydrogen was discarded as a lifting gas many years ago due to its volatility, and replaced with the safer, but less efficient, helium. Our scientists have developed Hydrargon, a compound of Hydrogen and Argon. This combines the lifting power of hydrogen and the inertness of argon. The Eagle also uses solar power rather than batteries. Photocells are stitched into the skin of the balloon, and convert sunlight to electricity to power the craft. The balloon is in fact made up of several balloons inside the skin of one big balloon. This increases safety and provides some proof against small arms fire - it is very difficult to shoot out every single balloon.

Balloon Size - 60m x 20m x 20m
Gondala Size - 20m x 10m x 5m (2 decks)
Lifting Gas - Hydrargon
Propulsion - 2 x rear mounted 2m propellors
2 x side mounted 1.5m propellors
Power - Solar. Holds three backup 1500v batteries
Air Crew - 6 (Captain, Pilot, Co-Pilot, Navigator, 2 x Engineers)
Ground Crew - 50
Range - Unlimited (Unless its very cloudy or nightime!)

The Albatross

A rare sight, this beast of a craft needs speciallly built airfields to land and take off. It is nuclear powered with a compartmented balloon and a huge 4 decked gondala. The Albatross is quite possibly the largest object that will ever fly.

Balloon Size - 150m x 50m x 50m
Gondala Size - 40m x 20m x 10m (4 decks)
Lifting Gas - Hydrargon
Propulsion - 3 rear mounted 3m propellors

OOC - To be honest, I just started this thread for a bit of fun. Can you imagine in RL an airship being used as a freighter!? So, in answer to your question, I have no idea. I would put a guess at about a tonne every 2 or 3 cubic metres, but this isn't backed up by any scientific fact.

OOC: An airship as a freighter is not an outlandish idea in fact it is being put into practice with the new rebirth of the airship in RL

OOC; I've just spent two hours working out the details and typing up my military airship models, and my 3 year old son (who should be asleep!) thought it would be really funny to turn the computer off before I could post, so it will have to wait untill tomorrow.
