Nikolaos The Great

Official Public Announcement

To counter Cotland's tariffs on the Suez Canal, Greece shall start taxing ships using the straits of Marmara Denizi to get to the Black Sea but not only that we will tax ships that we catch entering the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. As long as Cotland is taxing ships in the Suez Canal we won't stop. Military ships are banned from passing the straits of Marmara Denizi but are allowed to enter the Eastern Mediterranean except for Cotland warships. Fail to pay the taxes will result in the ship sinking and the crew arrested as pirates.

The government of the Empire of Cotland strongly protest against the refusal of Cottish vessels to pass. Let it be known that any attempt to stop Cottish vessels will be considered an act of war, and responded to accordingly.

We ask that the government of Greece sieze this clearly illegal taxation of passage in the Eastern Mediterranean, which is international waters. The colony of Eastern Egypt is sovereign Cottish territory, and we will not sieze collecting payment for passage thru sovereign Cottish territory. The money are being used to fund the maintenance of the Canal and to pay the workers. There are currently 21 000 persons working in the Canal. That is 21 000 families that gets fed thanks to the fee we collect for passage. Do you really wish to take the food away from their tables? We will not let nations pass thru the canal for free!

Our nations are both members of the Roman Confederacy, and we do not wish for the Confederacy to be torn apart of a possible conflict between our two nations. We ask that Greece sit down with us and negotiate with us.

We have said ours, and that all we want is peace even if we are willing to risk war to maintain sovereignty. It is up to you now to decide whether you wish a war or not.

Imperial Government of Cotland

If cheaper passage is provided to Greek vessels, will you lift your taxation? Let me remind you that members of the Roman Confederacy automatically have to pay only 0.1% of the value of the ship, regardless of whether it is a military or a civilian vessel.

******Official Statement From The Roman Government******

While we respect and accept the decision by Greece to set up tariffs in straits that it owns, we see the provision against the Cottish government to be unfair and extremely antagonistic. This conduct is detrimental to Confederacy unity, and is detrimental to the peace of the Mediterranean as a whole.

Having said that, we would like to invite Cotland and Greece to a conference to discuss their differences where it is hoped that a solution will be made. We will offer to moderate discussions and to hold the conference, but should both Greece and Cotland feel a more neutral party is necessary for such a task we will find one. We would also like to invite the Confederacy as a whole to discuss sea tolls in general, so that a common, Confederate front may be established on this issue.

The Roman government also today announces that it will pay the Confederacy fee when crossing the Suez Canal. While we are thankful for Cotland's generosity, we feel that, in the name of fairness we must pay the fee.

Thank you.

Imperial Response

Cotland does not recognize your right to taxate the Eastern Mediterrannean Sea, which is international waters. Cottish vessels will continue to sail in those waters, and any Greek (or other) attempt to stop them will be considered an act of piracy and dealt with accordingly.

Cotland and the Roman Empire have offered Greece a chance to negotiate. We hope and pray that you take the chance, so that many lives can be spared from a war between our two nations.

You can try, but we will not acknowledge it, nor will the many other nations whose waters you will violate. You have no right to demand free access thru Cottish territory. Let it be said, for any Cot loosing his/her life due to Greek pirate attacks, ten Greeks will die in return. Eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth.

Messina, Sicily

Messina Harbor was filled with ships. Gray hulls as far as the eye could see. The ships of the 9th and 20th Ynoga Battegroup, 4th Nimitz Battlegroup, 5th and 14th Destroyer Squadron and the 6th Wolfpack were going to escort 12 merchant vessels safely to Egypt. They would sail in international waters, and see if the Greeks tried to stop them. The ships had been designated TaskForce 12.

They are now sending warships through the Eastern Mediterranean Sea to see if we will actually attack them. I propose we send after the 1st and 2nd Hellenic Naval fleets."

CNS Enterprise, 17 nautical miles off Roman Libya

Vice Admiral Jessup, the commander of TaskForce 12, sat in his command chair on the bridge of the Enterprise, the Nimitz class carrier and flagship of the TaskForce. So far, no enemies had been spotted, but the admiral knew that the peace could be shattered any moment. They held a course 17 nautical miles off the Roman Libyan coast, just a few nautical miles outside the territorial waters. Assuransses (sp?) had been sent to the Roman Government that the Cottish ships would not attack the Romans.

By now, they were well within range of the Greeks, but also within range of Air Force planes stationed in Egypt. B-1B 'Lancer' heavy bombers could come to the assistance loaded with anti-ship cruise missiles if needed.

There were constantly at least one E-2C Hawkeye AWACS, 2 S-3A Viking ASW planes, 6 F/A-18 Hornet fighters and 10 F-35C JSF fighters in the air, providing cover. In addition, the sole Insidious class electronic warfare destroyer kept jamming the area around the fleet, so no radar could really see how many ships there were, or how they were positioned. No missile could track them effectively either.

The Insidious was one of the best purchases the Cottish Navy had made in the recent years. It could lock on to any frequency known to man and jam it.

The only thing that could possibly find them was the "eye in the sky". Satellites. But the Cots knew the position of the Greek satellites, and did their best to avoid them.

CNS Courageous

The Courageous, a Virginia class submarine attached to Wolfpack 6, were in position 90 nms north of the fleet. She was an experienced sub, having seen action when Moronyicka tried to invade Binthor. Laden with arms, she carried 24 ADCAPs, 12 sub-Lance missiles (equivalent to Harpoon) and 12 'Halbeard' anti-battleship missiles. Enough to give a lot of punishment.

She was currently at a depth of 360 meters making 5 knots. Enough to keep her on the depth, but not enough for anyone to hear her. Using her advanced sonar array, she detected a large amount of ships approaching from the North. Range 380 nautical miles. The profiles were isolated, and it soon became obvious that this was the Greek fleet.

Going quickly to periscope deapth, she reported her findings to the flagship, for then to quietly slip down to 360 meters again, undiscovered.

CNS Enterprise

Admiral Jessup got the message, and immediately ordered the taskforce to go to action stations. The crews of the ships in the TaskForce got their defensive systems online, including the 30mm CIWS guns and ESSM missiles.

It was time.

ic: The aircraft carriers started to launch their planes, the guided missile cruisers and destroyers prepared their missiles for launch, and the frigates searched the waters to find enemy submarines. There were at least 36 enemy subs out there.

Meanwhile in Egypt, twelve B-1B Lancers prepared for take-off. They carried 12 'Halbeard' anti-battleship missiles each, making the total tally of 'Halbeard' missiles flown to the area 144. Enough to sink the enemy ships twice. Accompaning them were eight F-22A radar-immune fighters, each carrying 2x AIM-9X Sidewinder and 6x AIM-120D AMRAAM.

The estimated time to arrival at Mach 1,7 were a little under one hour. The Greeks wouldn't know what hit'em.

The huge Halberd anti-Battleship missile is our answer to the BBGs that shrug off Harpoons like small arms fire. The Halberd is big and expensive, but it gets the job done. It is equipped with the most powerful solid fuel engine we can fit into a missile and the most advanced countermeasure avoidance technology we have. However, the main difference between this and any other missile is its massive 2,872kg Penetrative Explosive warhead which forms a shaped charge on impact, channeling the full force of the explosion directly into the armoured plate. The Halberd is also the most expensive missile we have, but if you see it take down a multi-billion dollar battleship, I’m sure you’ll agree that it’s worth every penny. Even more so, the upgraded Halberd features RAMjet technology, making even this 5 ton behemoth faster than a Harpoon missile.

Official Reponse from The Holy Republic of Hawdawg

Gentlemen can't we agree to get along? Fellow members of an Alliance should not be at each others throats. It was my understanding this would be negotiated out in a meeting to be held in Rome. Now here is our official position on fees, tolls, and the like. ANY Nation with holdings that are strategic in nature Canals, Straits, etc. should be able to charge a reasonable fee for access through the territorial waters. It is general practice to extend the forementioned territorial waters out to a distance that a nation feels safe. This acts as a buffer zone. Extending your territorial waters to encompass an entire Sea is a different matter. Following this line of logic, I could claim the entire Pacific Ocean as my territorial waters simply because I have territory in the area. This would action that would be considered looney. So lets set down at the negotiation table establish some rules, fees, and REASONABLE territorial waters and all get along? NTG I don't accept you claiming all the Eastern Meditteranean Sea as your territory and my ships will pass to and fro the Atlantic when they please.
