For simplicities sake I have decided to make a list of the classifications of ships that FT nations use, this is not official and you may disregard if you like, However, this would make RP'ing between me and other nations, and other nations and other nations, simpler and easier I believe.
This list is here to identify certain ships by their class, by doing this you can determine the ships general armaments, size, crew capacity, and maneuverability.
Also, ships are not always particular to one class, some ships in the fleet flagship class can be classified in the heavy assault class, their variants maybe different or that empire may not have used a heavy cruiser as a fleet flagship.
Also, when I use a figure like "Makes up 20% of an empires battle fleet." This means that I have taken logistics out of the picture; An empires entire fleet is broken down into two camps, battle and logistics, Logistics make up about 60% of an empires entire fleet, but this number is not typical of all nations. We take this number out though and only the battle fleet is left, so 20% of a battle fleets 40% is made up of heavy assault ships. I hope I haven't confused anyone.
Heres a break down:
Flagships
Ships in this class are the ships used by the highest ranking officials in their respective empire. These ships serve as the flagship of the entire military of their respective empires. These ships make up about .01% of an empires battle fleet. Such ships include:
Super Battle Ships
Battle Ships
Heavy Dreadnoughts.
Fleet Flagships
The ships that occupy this class are used by those commanding a single or even multiple fleets of their respective empires. These ships are easy to recognize, usually their design is different then those of the same class around them, or they are the biggest in the fleet. These ships make up about 1% of an empires entire battle fleet. Ships of this class include:
Dreadnoughts
Heavy Battle Cruisers
Battle Cruisers
Heavy Cruisers
Heavy Assault Ships
These ships are normally at the front lines of any fleet, just behind the fleet flagship or the empires flagship. They are the ships you normally see firing the big guns and taking most of the damage save the Flagship classes. These ships however only make up about 20% of an empires battle fleet. This class includes ships such as:
Battle Cruisers
Heavy Cruisers
Cruisers
War Cruisers
Heavy Destroyers
General Assault Ships
Ships in this class are near the front lines, behind the heavy assault ships and flag ships, but never less are valuable, they usually carry medium and sometimes heavy weapons. And usually carry more missiles then the higher classes and help provide support against fighters and small support craft.
These ships make up 30% of most empires battle fleet. Ships in this class include:
Cruisers
Destroyers
Missile/Torpedo Destroyers
Light Cruisers
War Destroyers
Support Ships
Ships in this class serve to support the ships in the front lines, taking down fighters and incoming missiles, and maneuvering their guns to hit weak points on enemy assault ships the front lines cant yet reach. Carriers are in this class because unless you deviate from the norm, all they can do is launch/create fighters and mobile mecha and shoot down the enemies with their point defense cannons. These ships make up about 50% of an empires battle fleet, not including fighters and bombers. Ships in this class include:
Heavy Carriers
Carriers
Heavy Frigates
Missile Frigates
Gun Ships
PD Frigates
Missile Boats
Gun Boats
Frigates
Escorts
Fighters/Bombers
Ships in this class are actually the back bone of any empires real fleet, They can maneuver faster then the bigger ships, are cheaper to build, and can actually do more damage then bigger ships since they do hit so much more often. Ships in this class include:
Heavy Bomber
Bomber
Heavy Fighter
Fighter
Heavy Interceptor
Interceptor
Scout
((OOC: Descriptions of all ships coming later.))
This was an experimental design for our first cruisers about 200 years ago, very obsolete but still served its purpose well:

This was the prototype design for our standard fighter, the one we use now looks similar but is different in its components:
