Journal of Haft, operative of the ecoterrorist group "The Green Fist"

March 2nd
Haft creeps silently through the foliage. For several weeks now he has journeyed across the semitropical forests in Schnortania, with only a ragged but effective mosquito net, a laminated map and compass, a swiss army knife, a small handgun with a silencer and a little package of powerful plastic explosives. The muskrats in the trees are wary. They, who Haft has sworn to protect, can only fear him. Haft slows down, nearing a rough patch of terrain. Pausing for a sip of water, he hears a heavy crunch of leaves that can mean only two things: One, that he has completely misjudged his proximity to his target, which he views to be impossible, or they know he is coming. Haft curses silently to himself and manages to get behind a tree, facing away from where he heard the sound. He strains his ears to listen for any approach, and more importantly, if it is one or two men. He hears the man stop much too close for comfort, and even though Haft is fairly certain he has not been spotted, he still sweats too much. Haft hears the man pull out something... he tightens the grip on his gun. Fortunately, the man is not pulling out a gun but a small walkie talkie, telling whoever his superiors are that the situation is normal. Haft considers his options for a moment, and finally settles on killing the sentry and changing his route. Although Haft is confident of his ability to move silently, if the sentry turns around, he will be spotted and the entire mission compromised. If he is badly injured, the rules are that he must kill himself lest he be captured. Perhaps the sentry will not be missed for a while; Haft has made excellent time so far and they probably aren't expecting him yet. When he hears the sentry begin walking away, Haft peeks out from behind the tree, sees the man and fires. He goes over to the soldier, makes sure he is dead, and searches the corpse for anything of use. He finds some military rations, the walkie talkie and a gun with ammunition. He only has room for the rations and a little bit of extra ammo, so that is all he takes, although he crushes the walkie talkie just in case it had a tracking device. Haft wants the search party to spend as much time as possible wondering what happened to the poor guard. He drags the body over to a heavy thicket about 50 yards away, covers it with as many leaves and as much dirt as he can, and tries to erase any traces of his prescense. He pulls out his map and his compass, thinks for a minute, and begins a quick run in the direction of the mountains, the only place Haft can think of where no one will be waiting for him. The sun begins to set.

Haft's first day of real action is completed, and hopefully we will find out what the future holds for him tomorrow, and maybe more clues as to what the heck he is doing :)
