New Evolution (IC RP)

Birds of a Feather
01-02-2005, 00:31
Zoen Cardinus, High Minister of the Community of Birds of a Feather and Parliamentarian/Representative of the Avian Highlands Joint Council, found himself in an unusual situation: in a laboratory, looking at an electron microscope. "So what am I looking at, Doctor?" The scientist beside him, Dr. Ceres Blujei-Cardinus, excitedly responded, "What I've discovered, High Minister, could well revolutionize the region! We of the Avian Highlands have bird-like characteristics, but we still do not know how to fly...or we didn't, anyway. But one of my co-workers brought his son in for his check-up and seemed concerned about the boy." "How so, Doctor?" Zoen responded. Despite that this was his wife he was talking to, he had to keep up the formality...one of the less enjoyable aspects of his office. "It seems, your Honor, that the boy can indeed fly! At least, briefly...the boy and parents consented to me taking some cell samples, and here's what I've found."

Ceres changed the microscope display to show the nuclei of two cells side by side. "The cell on the left is from the standard BoaF Homo Avius...specifically, me. The cell on the right belongs to the boy...and as you can see the chromosomes appear similar except for one key difference...right here." The doctor pointed to identical places on both nuclei. "As you can see, I, the non-flying Avian, have no chromosome here. But the boy has not one but TWO extra chromosomes! We're not sure, and we need to study this more, but we think these extra chromosomes may enable flight capabilities."

Zoen put his hand to his chin, his talon-like fingernails scratching gently. "This could be significant...if we're evolving flight capabilities, that could cause some instability, not only in the state, but in the region as well. There are already some factions in Cygnusifalco who opposed our secession, and no doubt they'll be really peeved if they found this out..." Zoen smiled a bit, then shifted his attention to his accompanying Parliament members. "I want this discussed in State Council...we need to develop a stance on this before we present it to the Joint Council." Zoen turned back to his wife and continued, "Doctor...I personally hope they'll decide to further fund research on this...but regardless, we need to do what's right for the state and the Avian Highlands." Ceres, a politician's daughter and wife, nodded. Zoen and his companions left, eager to decide the fate of this potentially life-changing discovery.

OOC:Is this Modern Tech? Also flying isnt all that great... you might get sucked into a jet engine....

PS:TAG!

OOC: Yes, assuming they were only at electron microscope level I'm guessing that they must just be at modern (or near post-modern) tech?
Birds of a Feather

OOC: Barely post-modern, yes. They're on par with their allies and parent nation, Cygnusifalco. And yes, I'll consider it an open RP.

To the first responder: what does ham do with my RP? lol))

OOC: I only have a few small requests...

1) Please, no heavy swearing or sexual situations. I find that it usually adds nothing to the story. "Damn" and "hell" are okay, as is a little romance, but don't overdo it.
2) Good grammar is a necessity.
3) No OOC chatter unless it's to inform (such as in this case) or to ask questions of me or any other nation regarding the RP or their role in it.

That's all...^_^V))

OOC: Quick note beforehand that I am playing as BoaF's parent nation, Cygnusifalco, in this post. Sometimes you might find posts for both Cygnusifalco and BoaF under one name...that's because they're both from the same person, who has little enough to a life to facilitate running two NS nations.))

"Hmm...this is interesting..." Darius Falco looked over the report sent to him by Zoen Cardinus. As the High Parliamentary Minister of Cygnusifalco, and as Zoen's best friend, he often knew about important happenings in Birds of a Feather before their Parliament did. But this...how Zoen got this through the usual channels without any leaks was impressive. "Interesting...and yet, it bothers me." Darius looked up at his wife, Minister of State Ophelia, as well as his other Cabinet Ministers, and frowned a bit. "That something of this magnitude should come to light so soon after the secession...this will get the anti-secessionists in an uproar if this gets out."

Ophelia nodded and replied, "It's surprising enough that the anti-secessionists haven't done anything rash after you allowed Birds of a Feather to secede. but if they were to find out about this discovery, that they've discovered a flight mutation..."

Darius nodded. "I know. They'd almost riot. Even if we're still allied, the anti-secessionists would see it at BoaF trying to get an edge on us. They're already unhappy about them being elected as UN Regional Delegate."

The Minister of Defense spoke up, "Yes, and we had hell trying to settle them down then. If they riot over this mutation discovery, especially if the Birds Parliament decides to pursue further research of it, we'd practically never get them calmed down."

"I know Zoen, though..." Darius responded. "He's a lot smarter than he looks. If he finds something concrete, he'll share it with us. If not, he'll let us know. We have to trust that the Birds Parliament will decide this issue based on what would be best for the region, not just for them. And if I know Zoen half as well as I'd like to think I do, he'll manage to convince his Parliament to do just that. Now, I move we vote on whether to wait and see what he does before we take further action." A quick second came from the Minister of Internal Affairs and Enviroment. "All in favor?" A unanimous aye. "Opposed?" Silence. "Motion passes. Is it all right with everyone if we adjourn?" All nod. "Okay, this meeting is adjourned. Ophelia, Xandros, please stay; I'd like to talk with you two alone."

After all but his wife and brother-in-law (the Minister of Defense) had left, Darius continued, "Something here bothers me...I don't doubt that this is indeed a very recent discovery, but if so, that means that the timing of its appearance is ironically coincidental. Something doesn't feel right...especially since the doctor who discovered the mutation is Zoen's wife. Xandros, as Minister of Defense, I want you to run some counterintelligence on the laboratory where the discovery was made. Remember: under the radar. We don't want to upset BoaF's fringe groups."

Xandros nodded. "Will do, Darius."

Darius smiled in response. "As for you, my lovely wife..." He softly stroked her hair. "I think tonight would be a good night for a girl's night out between you and Dr. Ceres, don't you think?"

Ophelia laughed a bit. "The one time you let me go out with the girls is when Ceres might be involved in something that could affect the region? You little..." She softly kissed him. "Might have to pay you back for that later tonight."

Darius grinned. "I'll be waiting. Good luck...both of you." Both Ministers nodded, then exited, leaving Darius to stare at the report, wondering. I hope you're not up to something, Zoen...I sincerely do...
