Gorkonian Colonial Infantry
Existing since the dawn of the Military itself, the Colonial Infantry forms the foundation of the entire armed forces. Possessing state-of-the-art weapons, extensive training, unswayable loyalty to the military superiority of Gorkon, and having the support of advanced airborne and armoured units, the Colonial Infantry are a force to be reckoned with.
Current Combat-Ready Infantrymen: 12,241,985
Of those:-
20,034 stationed at foreign military bases;
580,000 High Command Elite Guardians;
1,857,077 Colonial Infantry Strategic Assault Force;
93,500 dedicated helicopter transport/gunship pilots.
They are organised into divisions of 15,000, often with mechanised support.
Colonial Infantry Gear
Two variants of uniform are typically issued to infantry personnel, both shown here along with MA5B assault rifles.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/MattLever/Gorkon/combat_solider.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/MattLever/Gorkon/casual_soldier.jpg
On the Left is a soldier in full combat gear. This entails a helmet, protective body armour, equipment pouches and can come in a variety of camouflaged formats. The body armour and the helmet offer protection in the form of thin ceramics, lightweight carbon composites and standard Kevlar. The helmet offers the user a heads-up display with ballistics information (such as wind speed), target acquisition capabilities and light enhancing vision. It also incorporates a limited 4x zoom function, for when binoculars are not available. Although this eyepiece can be slotted back into the helmet out of the way, most soldiers prefer it to be active during battle.
The soldier on the Right is wearing a casual uniform, which includes a standard Kevlar vest, sunhat and equipment pouches, and can come in a variety of camouflaged formats. This is the typical attire of soldiers off-duty, and is usually worn on duty when not in active combat scenarios, or engaged in tasks such as peacekeeping. This uniform affords minimal protection, but maximum comfort and movement. This clothing is essentially the same as the inner layer of the combat uniform, so armour can quickly be equipped in an emergency.
Both uniforms come with heavy-duty, all-purpose boots, and are designed to keep the wearer warm in particularly cold conditions, such as those of Gorkon. Numerous camouflage patterns exist for forest, tundra, urban and desert environments.
Colonial Infantry Weapons
The Colonial Infantry deploy numerous weapons for use in the field, each specialising in a specific area. These weapons are generally reliable and perform their functions well, although the technologically advanced nature of the weapons requires extensive funding, even with simple things such as ammunition clips. And when they do break, most grunts are not capable of repairing anything more than a simple jam.
MA5B Assault Rifle
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/MattLever/Gorkon/MA5B_Assault_Rifle.jpg
Weight: 4.1kg loaded
Rate of Fire: 1000 rounds per minute
Muzzle Velocity: 1000 m/s
Max. Effective Range: 750 metres
Ammunition: 7.62x51mm FMJ
Magazine Capacity: 60 rounds
This is the standard issue assault rifle to Colonial Infantry forces in the field, and the pinnacle of Gorkonian weapons design developed in a joint operation by Gorkon Weaponry and HE Armaments. A gas-operated, selective fire weapon, it is generally accurate when fired in short bursts, but will deplete ammunition quickly. To compensate for this, the enlarged magazine can hold sixty rounds. The scope is entirely digital, with detailed ballistics information and gun status monitors, although this can all be specified by the user. The scope has up to 1.6x zoom capability, but defaults to 1.0x.
It adopts a similarly unusual bullpup layout to the FN P90, whereby the magazine is loaded on top, parallel to the barrel, and the cartridges must be rotated 90 degrees before entering the barrel. The magazine actually slots neatly beneath the tactical scope out of the way, and is easily slotted out provided no force is used. Spent cases are deposited downwards, out of harms way.
The weapon is modular by nature. The lower receiver can be interchanged with a flashlight, a 40mm impact grenade launcher, a laser targeting system, or an enlarged grip. An optional upper receiver allows for the tactical scope to be replaced with conventional ironsights and additional Picatinny rails. A variant of the MA5B exists with a 50% larger barrel and a more powerful zoom function, which is dubbed the MA5BS and is designed for sharpshooters. Most soldiers tend to use the flashlight fixture, considering the dark nature of Gorkon during the winter.
Unfortunately the weapon is quite heavy
FN P90 Submachine Gun
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/MattLever/Gorkon/fn_p90.jpg
Weight: 3kg loaded
Rate of Fire: 900 rounds per minute
Muzzle Velocity: 600-700 m/s
Max. Effective Range: 200 metres
Ammunition: 5.7x28mm SS190
Magazine Capacity: 50 rounds
A blowback operated, selective fire weapon, the P90 was chosen as the Gorkonian standard submachine gun due to its power and versatility. The P90 is capable of piercing light armour at 100 metres, and the flash hider can be replaced by a silencer for covert missions.
The built-in, 1x tritium-illuminated red dot scope as well as the side Picatinny rail (usually fitted with tactical flashlight), coupled with the ambidextrous design, only add to the weapon's considerable appeal, though the upper receiver can be replaced to use conventional ironsights and have additional equipment rails if desired.
1,000 P90s were ordered from Fabrique Nationale initially for trials. Following this Gorkonian High Command purchased the manufacturing rights. The P90 is frequently used by Colonial Infantry Strategic Assault Force (special forces), as well as Shadow Squadron (the Military Intelligence's own covert military unit). It is estimated that the Colonial Infantry alone deploys roughly 1,000,000 of these weapons.
M6D Handgun
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/MattLever/Gorkon/M6D_Pistol.jpg
Weight: 800g loaded
Rate of Fire: N/A
Muzzle Velocity: 650 m/s
Max. Effective Range: 300 metres
Ammunition: 12.7x32.6mm AP HE
Magazine Capacity: 12 rounds
This is the standard issue sidearm to Colonial Infantry forces in the field. A recoil-operated, semi-automatic weapon, the M6D is a highly reliable sidearm with high yield and an ample, if slightly larger than most, magazine. The pistol is designed around a customised 12.7x32.6mm calibre FMJ cartridge with explosive tipped bullets, designed principally to pierce body armour. Originally deployed in the Civil Security force as a secondary sidearm, its notable power and reliability saw it adopted for widespread military use shortly afterwards.
The M6D suffers from high levels of recoil, meaning that even seasoned military officers often flinch when firing the powerful weapon.
M90 Shotgun
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/MattLever/Gorkon/M90_Shotgun.jpg
Weight: 4kg loaded
Rate of Fire: 180 rounds per minute
Muzzle Velocity: N/A
Max. Effective Range: 60-70 metres
Ammunition: 12 gauge
Magazine Capacity: 8 rounds
A pump action/semi-automatic, magazine fed shotgun, the M90 is capable of pump-action and rapid-fire modes, making it a superbly versatile tactical weapon. Semi-automatic mode can be activated with the flick of a switch located on the left of the weapon. There are known jamming issues when using semi-automatic mode, which has forced the designing company HE Armaments to begin developing a replacement model. Beneath the barrel, an integrated tactical flashlight can be found.
S2 AM Sniper Rifle
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/MattLever/Gorkon/S2_AM_Sniper.jpg
Weight: 18kg loaded
Rate of Fire: N/A
Muzzle Velocity: 1450 m/s
Max. Effective Range: 950 metres
Ammunition: 14.5mm, armour-piercing, fin-stabilised, discarding-sabot
Magazine Capacity: 4 rounds
A gas-operated, magazine fed weapon, the S2 AM sniper rifle is the latest long-range rifle to be used by the Gorkonian Military, replacing the foreign-made KSVK. Targeting is achieved via a small LCD display mounted inside the large 'box' on top of the weapon. With an 8x zoom and night-vision, this tactical display also helps target acquisition and reads environmental factors such as wind speed/direction. Select models are equipped with limited-range sound amplifiers/recorders, for enhancing sounds made in the general direction the weapon is aimed. This is particularly favoured by various special/covert units for information gathering purposes.
A fold-away bipod mounted beneath the weapon allows for greater stability when targeting and firing from a distance.
M19 SSM Rocket Propelled Grenade Launcher
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/MattLever/Gorkon/M19_SSM_Rocket.jpg
Weight: 20kg loaded
Rate of Fire: N/A
Muzzle Velocity: 1450 m/s
Max. Effective Range: 700 metres
Ammunition: 102mm shaped-charge, high-explosive AP rockets
Magazine Capacity: 2 rounds
A portable, shoulder-fired weapon, the M19 SSM rocket launcher is the primary armour-defeating weapon of the Colonial Infantry, capable of penetrating 850mm armoured steel (Reactive Armour Protected). For versatility at the expense of extreme weight, the M19 SSM is a magazine-fed weapon, with each magazine holding two rockets, with a 4x scope mounted on the left side.
M9 HE-DP Fragmentation Grenade
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/MattLever/Gorkon/M9_HE_DP_Frag.jpg
Fuse: Impact-activated, time can be set (1, 2, 3 or 5 seconds)
Explosion Radius: 10 metre
A high-explosive, dual-purpose weapon, the M9 high-explosive dual-purpose fragmentation grenade is a thrown weapon with an impact-detonated, variable time fuse. A twist of a dial situated around the small 'handle', the fuse time can be set to 1 second, 2 seconds, 3 seconds or 5 seconds. This fuse will be activated when a significant impact is detected. The M9 frag grenade is useful for reaching areas where direct-fire weapons are impractical, for incapacitating large groups of enemy personnel quickly and efficiently, and for destroying/immobilising light vehicles such as jeeps.
Trivia: These grenades are shipped to the Colonial Infantry in crates marked 'Not fit for consumption.'
