Pacitalia Votes 2005: Prime Ministerial Elections

Pacitalian Prime Ministerial Elections 2005

Today is the day we've all been waiting for. Today, Pacitalians aged 20 and older decide who will lead their nation until another full election in 2008. It is true that the new leader's term will be short, but they must complete the term left unfinished by the late Prime Minister Ell. And yes, it is also true that today we only decide who takes over as Prime Minister and after he/she will name certain persons as parts of their cabinet. The representations in both houses will stay the same, which will make it tough for anybody but Nikos Karagounis, or to a lesser extent, Fernando Chiovitti, to lead.

But this is a special election - it decides who takes over as leader of the nation after as we said, our late Prime Minister, who was assassinated one week ago today.

The best of luck is wished to Pacitalians voting today here in the nation and Pacitalians voting abroad in places like Sarzonia, Canada, Yafor 2 and Euroslavia.

OOC: Is yours a Parliamentary democracy like Britain? If that's the case then the party would just appoint a new PM. Unless the PM is your executive branch, like a President.

OOC: No kidding. Smokin Tha Chronic is IGNORED. But first, I'll send a Godrod down to smack him around. ;)

Prae, it's a constitutional democratic republic - the PM is both the head of state and head of government, so there are no appointments. And yes, he/she is part of the executive branch.

We wish your nation luck in these elections, and are glad to see that your country is back on it's feet. It is a good thing for our people to know that a country can recover so well from a tragic event like that, it reassures them our own country can also survive and rebuild.

We beg Pacitalia to reconsider these elections. Why jeopardize your great nation's future by permitting fools to determine who will lead? Many nations have been ruined by the plague called democracy. We hope you do not suffer that same fate.

I am aware the Generalissimo is in Sarzonian custody and has no way of contacting any other nations in any way. Therefore, whoever is pretending to be him can cease immediately for the sake of their own people. As well, we'd appreciate it if a nation already on diplomatic probation did not attempt to change our minds on the process of democracy. Pacitalia has been democratic for almost 400 years, why would we change now?

The small crystal glass sat half-full… tempting the man sitting in front of it. The glass knew all the secrets of the man, from the infidelities to the clandestine operations to the illegitimate children to the even more hideous skeletons laying in the man’s secret closets. The glass also knew that the times he was to be used were rare times indeed – generally not unless the man was upset or nervous about some issue in particular, or perhaps a whole list of problems weighing down upon him like the world upon Atlas. Finally, it felt the familiar cold grasp of the aging, stubby fingers around the narrow and fragile stem. It reveled in the feel of the cold vodka tonic sliding across its polished surface and across the warm lips around its outer edge.

Indeed, the nights where Ivan Valovich would take part in his hidden habit of vodka tonics were nights where the stress would lie greatly upon his shoulders and his mind. Many things were going on around the Commonwealth; the times were changing – as was the nature of the Commonwealth itself. In his many years, he had seen the expansionist government collapse into an isolationist government and recently witnessed that collapse into this new empirical government. After being around for more than fifty years, he had seen his share of government changes. Thus, it wasn’t so much his orders to keep tabs on the election in Pacitalia that caused him this throbbing headache; it was his simple analysis of what it meant. The Commonwealth needed new allies in order to secure its new territories, in order to find and gather new territories. Prime Minister Tetley and Emperor Barin were surely watching this election to see if the government in Pacitalia would be ripe for a concerted diplomatic overture to garner support for the Commonwealth in the international scene. Those two men had great plans for this once small nation – he didn’t doubt that. He merely doubted the long-lasting impacts, and the manners in which they accomplished those plans.

And so the muted television screen threw flickering blue light across the spacious office, casting ominous shadows in the crags and pits and lines of Valovich’s face. The small crystal glass sparkled in the dim light, the liquid contents – what little remained – scattered some of the light resulting in little partial prisms on the minister’s desk, though they went unheeded. Ultimately, however, the small crystal glass watched the face of the man in front of it grow longer and more worn with every passing year – and as of late he had seen much growth, tonight was no different. The glass though didn’t really care. Not about this man, nor about the elections in Pacitalia. It would outlive this man, and it would outlive the nation of Pacitalia. People came and went, but it knew that its basic molecular structure would remain unchanged for thousands and thousands and thousands of years until the end of time, though it might become chipped and cracked. And in the end, the small crystal glass would win. In the meantime, however, it amused itself with all the trivialities of these fragile flesh-formed objects.

Democracy, no doubt, was one of the contributors to Timothy Ell's death. Honor his memory by removing the shackles of democracy, which hinder your nation from reaching its true zenith of glory.

Garbed in Pacitalian clothing, with faces surgically altered to look like those of Pacitalians, and even fake Pacitalian accents, the ten RBESH assassins had no trouble getting into Pacitalia in spite of its tight security; their performances, as well as their forged passports, were flawless. Within two hours, they hoped to locate the home of Lemvi Megescu, who they would punish for his crimes against Pacitalia.

Disguised as a mailman, one of the assassins rang Lemvi Megescu's doorbell. He held a package which looked like a gift from a well-wishing fan. Unbeknownst to the hapless politician, it actually contained five kegs of dynamite, which would detonate instantaneously when the package was opened.

He rang the doorbell again.

Josh, you're making Pacitalians look like fools. On an election day in Pacitalia, all politicians are sequestered in undisclosed locations to watch polling results and eventually make concessions or acceptance.

Oh, and just thought I'd let you know - if you do kill him, Pacitalia will be forced to go to war against you. ;)

(OOC2: Just so you know, this assassin is a complete idiot.)

He rang the doorbell again. No answer. "Huh," he said, surprised. May as well make sure the device works, while I'm waiting, he said, opening the package, with explosive results. When Lemvi Megescu came home, he would have quite a mess to clean up.

"Buona sera, good evening. This is emergency response, questo è la Spedizione di Urgenza."

"There has been an explosion across the street, I don't know exactly what happened."

"What is your location?"

"Uh, 3045 Via Corpuzzaste, Lado Norte."

"Do you smell gas, sir?"

"No, I don't."

"Do you see any fumes coming from the house or surrounding area, or continuous fire?"

"No, it's just smoky over there."

"A crew will be there in five minutes."

"Thanks."

The man walked across the street, the warm wind biting at his face. He gasped at what he saw stuck to the walls and ground at the front door of Lemvi Megescu's house and fainted in response.

Valovich watched the small ticker on the news, with the ridiculous graphic display of election results. He vaguely remembered the days when the television told you the news without all this fancy-schmancy animations and sounds and almost-magic tricks. He missed the days with the one anchor who reported all the news at dinner time. Granted, they still existed here in the Commonwealth, but they were being phased out because the newer generations couldn’t deal with anything that wasn’t spoon-fed to them.

Slowly, he took out a piece of paper and scribbled some lines onto it with an old pen coloured blue in a pattern reminiscent of marble stone. When he was finished he pressed the silent buzzer to alert his secretary that he had something for her. He watched the young woman take the note and say something trivial – something he didn’t listen to. All was done for the night, he left his small crystal glass on the side of the desk and reached behind his chair to the coat rack and found his long black woolen overcoat. He threw it over his shoulder and turned out the light, finally on the way to his empty home.
