OOC: An NS Awards Presentation

Sarzonia
25-01-2005, 20:59
Introduction

I've been thinking about doing this for a while now. It's similiar in some respects to Steel Butterfly's awards on the NS forum, but there may be some differences. I would like to present an award to exceptional NS gamers for various gaming-related categories. My role will be to collect the nominations and then help decide the winners of the awards. I may do one of two things for this: 1) I could select any volunteers to help with the decision making or 2) I can create a poll to get the results, or even 3) I can ask you to TG me your votes.

I will present you a series of categories and will ask for serious nominations for them. In the space of the nomination post, please provide a convincing reason why you think the person you nominate should win. Examples are welcome as long as you don't example-wank by providing a million and one links. One or two prime examples with a reason why it's good would be in order. In other words, typing something like "AMF should be best overall RPer. Enough said." No, that's not enough said. Something like "Freethinkers is the best naval designer because I said so," also is not enough. As an English major, I loathed minimum or maximum word or page counts in my uni days. As a result, I'm not going to provide a word count minimum or maximum and count how many words you wrote to decide if you've written enough. If you can convince me in 50 words or it takes 200 words, do what it takes. If you write more than a page using one inch margins in Microsoft Word, you've probably written too much. Ten words is probably too little. But at least put some thought into your piece.

Additionally, storefront awards have been moved here (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=392498), to Sanctaphrax's thread. That ceremony is connected to this one, so the same rules apply.

Finally, self-nominations are not allowed. You also may not nominate someone for more than one category, so choose your nominations wisely. When you write, make sure you provide the who and the why.

Categories

1. Best Ground Combat RPer
Who among the NS crowd could match wits with General Eisenhower? Who could outflank the Duke of Wellington in his sleep? Who can paint the best picture of a ground combat situation? Nominate him or her in this category.

2. Best Naval Combat RPer
Which NSer could sit on the bridge of the USS Nimitz and lead her into battle and PWN the enemy? Who do you think is the best naval RPer in terms of strategy, ability to tell a naval combat story, etc.? The best NS Admiral goes here.

3. Best Aerial Combat RPer
Who is the Top Gun of NS? Whose aerial missions can evoke the Sopworth Camel of Snoopy's imagination? Who do you think would pwn in any dogfight? The best Air Force RPer goes here.

4. Best Space Combat RPer
Who channels Jean-Luc Picard? Captain James T. Kirk? Who is the Lord Nelson of space? Let us know here!

5. Best Special-Ops RPer
If you have 500 men and your mission is to hamper the combat readiness of a million-plus man army, who do you call upon to take on the mission? Spill it here.

6. Best Negotiating RPer
Now that you and your enemy have either wiped each other's militaries out, who's the best one at brokering a peace agreement that can help you save face or win or just end the bloodshed? Tell us here.

7. Best Character RPer
Who tells the most believeable stories? Who provides characters that you can feel, touch, or want to reach into your computer monitor and bitch-slap them? Reveal your answers here.

8. Best Military RPer
This category is all-encompassing in the annals of military RPs. This is for the poster who does the best job at military RPs. Army, navy, air force, space, special ops... this rewards people who are strong at RPing more than one branch of the military.

9. Best Factbook
By popular demand, this category is for people who can create the best snapshot of their nation with a factbook. Which country's factbook makes you want to go visit? Which one makes you cower in fear? Which one makes you want to invade? This is where you tell us!

10. Most Original Factbook
We recognise the best factbook, now tell us which factbook is the most original, the most inventive, the most creative, the funniest, you get the idea. Now spill it!

11. Best newb RPer, time category
This is probably the most subjective of the categories since it also depends on what the definition of newb is. For this category, nominees must be an original country of no more than three months old at the time of nomination.

12. Best new RPer, forums category
This is also highly subjective since it also depends on what the definition is. For this category, nominees must be original countries with no more than 50 in character posts at the time of nomination.

13. Best debut country, 2004
This is where you recognize the best RPer who made his or her NS debut in 2004. Did a March '04 country burn itself into your mind as a superpower? Did a June '04 country strike fear into your July 2003 hearts? Let us know about it!

14. Best All-Around RPer
The Mack Daddy of 'em all. If there were one person that you could point a newb to and say "learn from her," which RPer would it be? Since this is all-encompassing, this one will have to be longer and in more detail than the others. Nominate your Patron Saint of the RPer here.

15. Lifetime Achievement Award
This is for those long-time RPers who deserve to have a separate day in the sun for a long, prosperous career as an RPer. This can be highly subjective as well, so let us know why you think the winner should get this!

16. Greatest National Leader Award (suggested by Borman Empire)
This award goes to the country whose leader you would be proud to call your own, or the leader you wish were running your RL country. It's another of those subjective honours, so detail and reasons are important!

Hopefully, this will be fun and not a popularity contest. Hopefully this can be a fun exercise and a way to recognize your fellow RPer. The winners don't win a particular prize except the respect and admiration of their fellow RPers and a chance to bask in the spotlight for a while, but it's always nice to be recognized for your efforts, I think.

OOC: I'd like to nominate Iuthia for his superb diplomatic RP's, put him as a contender under the "Best Negotiator RPer" because I believe he has some special skills others don't have, he is very good at separating IC and OOC and he has a small mist about him that says "Rawr."

I'll proffer some example of his (in my opinion) excellent diplomatic RP, he lays out the atmosphere just right and gives a good feeling, I'll try and give some examples of his RPing as soon as I can but that may still be a while, just bear with me!

Thanks.

I'd like to propose one more awards category - Best single post

For the single post that, standing on its own, is well written, descriptive and creative. A link to the post and/or a quotation of the post should be provided.

For #9, I shall nominate Freethinkers. His ships are works of art, notwithstanding the art he does for them. I think he is the only ship designer whose ships I can close my eyes and imagine being on the bridge of something like the HIMS Gehenna (a modified Doujin) and looking over the smallest detail of the ship and almost smell the sea water. Every time I deploy a fleet I can imagine watching the ships maneuver on the holographic display of the flag bridge. It litterally gives me chills and brings a smile to my face.

For character roleplaying, Automagfreek. He has the best set of characters I've seen, takes great care in writing about them, and his style is...awesome. Every one of his roleplays is something different, and it's usually based around his characters rather than masses of soldiers.

As for negotiating, Iuthia. I don't recall the last time I've seen Iuthia in any sort of military action, but he's always negotiating (effectively) and using diplomacy. Frankly, when Iuthia comes into a thread and says something, people listen.

It CLEARLY says ONE nomination by each person, and you MAY NOT NOMINATE YOURSELF!

I would have to argue for Clan Smoke Jaguar for Naval storefront due to the consistent high quality of the information presented, the wide variety of options available to the potential purchaser, and all-round general know-how. Clan Smoke Jaguar set the standard by which we all establish storefronts.

Er...you DO mean one nomination for each person, right? We can nominate different people, so long as it's one per category.

I would like to nominate decisive action for Best Character RPer.

I mean, just look at his factbook. He has bios for more then 90 different characters in there. He's taken time to develop his characters and tie them in with his plots. He takes time to do stuff like post one of his characters 3 page journal, he is almost always involved in more then 1 character RP at a time and somehow still make each one interesting.

VOTE DA FOR BEST RPer.

... ok I'm done (goes and sits in a corner)

Ps: Don't belive me? Just put in a forum search for "mississippi"

Wow; thanks TIN.
OK, for Best Space RP, I nominate Unified Sith; hes been the source of some really great Space based RP that I've been involved in; and always puts in a good amount of detail, that captures my interest. I can only hope that he keeps RPing the Sith Wars; until I have the chance to eat his Empire ;) :D

Well if I can make as many nominations as I want I might as well do it all the way right?

I would like to nominate Wolfish for Best Naval Combat RPer, while I find it hard to read boring naval warfare posts he always manages to make me read further, even though he's probably shooting at my own ships and I actualy don't even want to know what he's doing!

And up second, Doomingsland for Best Ground Storefront/Vehicle Designer, you are one of the few designers that I come back to each and every time and your designs are realistic and good enough to blow the hell out of the competition.

Third will be Praetonia for Best Naval Storefront /Ship Designer, no bitching against me about his Prae, I'm not changing it.
Basicly the reasons are the same as with Doomingsland, I keep coming back and I will buy your entire storefront empty once I get my country back.

And up for fourth is Iuthia for best Best Negotiating RPer since there is basicly no one else to nomiate(that and he's damn good at what he does)

And last, (certainly not the least) Automagfreek for Best Character RPer, well it was either him or DA and DA's chars get boring after the third post full of info, AMF's posts are long but still short enough so you keep your head with it and continue reading.

PS: Could we add a category for best overal designer?

I'd like to nominate TIN for best Factbook, and Doomingsland for Best ground Forces RP.

TIN's factbook in part inspired me, along with Moleland's, to write up my own history; and Doom's always good in ground RP's. Hardly anythign more terrifying than an army of bloodthirsty unwashed Dooman's to spice up some combat.

How about best overal designer Sarzonia? Because I know some new weapons and the like don't realy fall into any category.A previous add (I think it may have been today):

12. Best Storefront Designer
Like the all-encompassing awards that preceded this, this award honours those who provide excellence at more than one type of store. Does someone have a MBT AND a battleship AND a combat fighter you're just dying to have? Is there someone out there whose designs just grip at your wallet even though you design your own stuff? This is where the best all-around storefront designer goes.

If you want, I can create another category.

Best Character RPer: Five Civilized Nations. A personal friend of mine, meny of his RP's follow the stories of the Crusades, and each new adventure with them contains some suprises or something new and diffrent. He's also a fabulous space Roleplayer, and has superb handeling of his space military.

1. Best Ground Combat RPer
Generic Empire. I have been in a lot of wars wiht GE and am a strong ally of him, his Praetorains are not a thing to go in combat against.

5. Best Special-Ops RPer
Knight Phalanxia. THe first RP I saw him in was mainly him doing special ops. and he was very good at it too. He was also helping to put down a rebellion of mine and without his special ops. men i would have lost alot more soldiers.

6. Best Negotiating RPer
Iuthia, he may have my empire hating him but he is alwyas negotiating

8. Best Military RPer
Doomingsland. Doom is much like GE with ground combat, not as good in my opinion, but he also has naval and aerial combat handled quite well.

9. Best Factbook

How about a category for "Most Creative RP'r" Someone who creates RP's that are creative and fun, but not the standard "Invasion,war,earthquake,famine,_________is banned, revolution, etc. RP's?
This is something that is important to keeping the game alive in my mind, when I log on and see an RP that is "off the wall" or really cool like Mauiwowee's "Death Penalty Games" thread or Camel Eater's "Frisbee Golf" thread I say "YES!" something cool and different.

If you add this as a catagory, I'll nominate Camel Eaters.

As to the others

TIOR as a naval RP'r
Roach Busters for Best fact book
Sarzonia for best all around RP'r

I need to think about the others.

Hm... nice to see a some people appreciate the few words I give occasionally, though I think I should try and keep up with International Incident affairs as much as I used to but I guess I've been lax recently after pulling out of Decisive Action and moving on to more important matters elsewhere.

Seeing as this whole thing is set in International Incidents, I'll try and keep it to Internation Incident frequenting nations... otherwise my list would be filled with nations most people here wouldn't have heard of.

5. Best Special-Ops RPer: Zvarinograd - despite having to keep advising him on more effecient ways of getting what he wants, I find his methods generally to be well thought out (though occasionally impractical for show) and show alot of imagination and talent.

6. Best Negotiating RPer: Euroslavia - Out of the majority of nations I've danced with during negotiations in the past, Euroslavia has proven to be one of the guys I can deal with concistantly... he's not my choice from all of Nationstates as I know tons of heavy diplomacy hitters in NS (NDA allies being at the top of my mind), however for International Incidents know he'll listen to everyone and generally take the time to work things out. A few others good well for themselves, so it was a tough choice never the less.

7. Best Character RPer: Automagfreek - Again, this nomination isn't down to my overall favorite, as others such as Gehenna would be much higher in my list, though they don't really RP in this forum so it would be pointless to count them. AMF generally impresses me with the integrity of some of his characters, who I simply like for their concistantly tough personalities and good IC representation, it's rare that AMF slips with his character.

I'm also glad he hasn't fallen into the trap of some and tried RPing them as sex gods or listing their IQ which could be called to question from actions. Not that AMF's characters have done anything blaringly stupid before, but I know others have.

14. Best All-Around RPer: Euroslavia - I like the guy, he's easy going and fun to deal with. He likes to work to make guides for others and his roleplay is of good quality. Of course, there are many other RPers who could be nominated for this award... however I feel Euroslavia deserves a mention for the work he does for his own stuff and to help others.

15. Lifetime Achievement Award: n/a - I would like to have filled this one in, but I've got to think about it... one the whole it's a too wide in nominations.

You'll notice alot missing awards of course, but I don't feel that I've been in the position to see alot of combat in this forum and while I've been around a fair bit of it, alot of them I wouldn't award simply for the sheer number wanking seen from nations with million man armies and the like.

As for newb awards, well I don't feel like I'm about to go for those... they aren't my thing. Though I've had one new nation once who was a gem before real life took him away from NS. Shame too... all his RP was nice.

so; how many nominees for each category? and then when does voting start?
Sarzonia
27-01-2005, 17:16
I originally decided I wasn't going to nominate people because I didn't want to influence the voting, but I figure this would give an idea of the detail I was looking for in my written description.

1. Best Ground Combat RPer
Generic Empire. I'm about to face his army on the battlefield and with my lack of experience in ground combat RPs, writing the embarrassment of my army should prove interesting writing. He puts tremendous detail into his RPs and his writing reminds me of a young Patrick O'Brian.

2. Best Naval Combat RPer
Praetonia. My single-ship battle with him in the Mutiny on the Ithaca thread was one of the highlights of my RPing experience. Anyone who wants to be a naval master has to bring his "A" game against Prae.

3. Best Aerial Combat RPer
I've had limited experience in watching aerial combat RPs, so I'll duck out of this one.

4. Best Space Combat RPer
I've had even less experience in watching space combat RPs so I'll bow out here too.

5. Best Special-Ops RPer
Pacitalia. His SAFD are portrayed brilliantly and they usually meet their objectives.

6. Best Negotiating RPer
Granzi. He is a master of negotiating and was able to keep one of my ill-tempered characters in line. He shows an ability to bring about compromises and knows when to back down from a losing battle (figuratively).

7. Best Character RPer
Since I'm nominating Automagfreek later on, I'll give the nod to Roach-Busters. Some of his ideas are a bit *orginial* but you can generally picture the people he creates. And sometimes I just want to go in there and bitch-slap all of them.

8. Best Military RPer
Many of the people I've seen in RPs have a lack of comfort with one particular area of combat (such as my discomfort with writing ground combat RPs). The closest I've seen to someone not having that is probably going to be Hamptonshire.

9. Best Factbook
I vote for Isselmere's. To partially quote Zoogie, it is very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very detailed. Reading his factbook makes it look like I'm reading a RL country's CIA information page.

10. Most Original Factbook
Probably TIOR if he has one.

11. Best newb RPer, time category
Silverrock. I've only seen him post maybe 11 or 12 times and only a small handful of those are IC, but his debut (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=7393543&postcount=164) on the I.I. scene was absolutely brilliant by just about any set of standards. (Note: He's exactly three months old as of today.)

12. Best new RPer, forums category
I'm stepping out of this category.

13. Best debut country, 2004
I'm stepping out of this one too.

14. Best All-Around RPer
Automagfreek. I almost called this the AMF Award. Hell, I almost made him ineligible just because I figured he'd win it hands down! But if you want characters that seem to breathe in front of you, if you want the horrors of war described in a chilling way, you go to Automagfreek.

15. Lifetime Achievement Award
I'm voting for Euroslavia for his wealth of helpful threads and for one of the largest collections of stickied threads in history. ;)

Nominations for a "Best Category" is beyond me.

I am new at this, and ask that you will please pardon me.

Storefronts, I have been to, and story lines as well. However, anything concerning Nationstates, in particular, have been and will be addressed. :)

Just a reminder, I'm looking for reasons for nomination with the nominations themselves. Just naming someone doesn't count.

You don't have to write the next great encomium but you should show your thought behind your nominations.

Perhaps R-B was just doing an off-beat awards thread then? It's one where you were nominated.

Anyway, I'll go ahead and adopt it later on today. I'll give a few more days for nominations (and ask those who have nominated folks to write their spiels) and then try to get a committee together (I already have Wolfish at least for the committee).

To: All players who have nominations in this thread
From: Mike (the player behind Sarzonia)
Subject: Nominations

Since there's been no activity on this particular thread for a time, I'm going to CLOSE the nominations now and ask those of you who didn't follow the rule asking you to include a written justification to do so now. If one is not edited into your nomination by 11 p.m. Thursday night, the nomination WILL NOT COUNT.

Again, it doesn't have to be super long (I gave an example earlier in this thread) but it should show some thought.

Afterwards, Wolfish and I will discuss the nominations and announce winners.

If you're the judge as well as having the ability to nominate, then we're screwed. It's a silly little popularity contest anyway, so I don't care. Real talent will be replaced with your friends.
