Picking Up the Pieces

Marenwence
24-01-2005, 11:50
The city lay in ruin, a shattered remnant of its former glory. It had been but a few months since the Tam'Shakar had ruled over Marenwence with an iron fist, safely within their keep in Caven. Year after year their power had grown, adding wealth to their coffers and men to their military ranks. And it seemed as though with each year came new land and more suffering. Seeking power over the nearby dukes and feudal lords, the "iron monarchs" lashed out, capturing province after province, each presenting a gateway to the next. And each became the next annex of Marenwence, more land and labor to be exploited by the Tam'Shakar as they watched safely within the spires of Caven Keep.

Now those same towers stood only a few feet above the ground, stone by stone torn down by the very hands that had once slaved to build them up. It had begun when a local farmer on the outskirts of Caven had refused a summons to military service. It was known to all that the choice in Marenwence was either to serve or die. Yet this simple farmer had had enough of this oppression. In refusing, he stirred the dormant rebellion, sleeping in the hearts of all in the shackled country. When the secret police arrived to execute the man, so did a vast number of his countrymen, armed with pikes, pitchforks, and scythes. The secret police were literally torn to pieces to be put on display in the town center. With this open rebellion the Tam'Shakar seeked to crack down on the populace, with quite the opposite result. Underground press quickly began circulating the news of the defiant farmer throughout the central province, sparking further revolt. Soon after, the first raids of the local armories began.

And as open rebellion exploded throughout Caven and her surrounding cities, the pamplets and messangers of the rebellion spread to the outermost annexes of Marenwence, spurring anti-Tam'Shakar sentiment to explode into an all out civil war. A year and a half later, all was quiet again. The iron monarchs had fallen. A provisional government quickly sprang up and a grand council was called to order in Caven, soon drawing members from every province. From this, the Commonwealth of Marenwence was formed, its foremost goal: to rebuild and restore Marenwence to her former strength and beauty.

During the rule of the Tam'Shakar the building had been research lab, sitting just outside Caven. It appeared almost out of place depending on a person's perspective. The building matched those around it. Yet it clashed strangely with the Caven Keep, its ancient architecture actually modelled after keeps and castles crumbling throughout Marenwence.

Now the lab had become something of the base of operations for the Commonwealth, due to its vast auditorium and mostly functional communications systems. It was just for this purpose that a well-groomed, dark-haired man sat before a video camera, straightening prim proper clothes. The camera was set to roll.

The man smiled congenially before speaking with a firm but friendly gaze. "Greetings. I am Custodian David Geataro, speaking on behalf of the people of Marenwence. We, the newly christened Commonwealth of Marenwence seek international recognition as a country and wish to establish diplomatic ties throughout this world..." The speech carries on for some time, each word strangely heartfelt, this man clearly a passionate patriot of his country.

(I see that it's not just me having no luck! A nation needs an established name in order to attract attention, and needs to attract attention to establish a name for itself! At the moment, I can't do much in character as Jipangunesia is an anarchic mess in the middle of the Pacific, with no unifying government to speak of, or we'd send some sort of congratulations at the very least. All I can think to say is that, in the possibly unlikely event of you wanting to keep some of the 'bad guys' going any number of Jipangunesia's hundreds of tiny, barely populated islands offer the perfect refuge to a criminal on the run, or a wannabe despot prepared to exploit a remote paeleolithic people such as some of our isolated islanders! Ha, if that's no good to you, well, just have some OOC encouragement and keep at it :) Someone will notice... won't they?

OOC: It's a good thread. Here ya go.

IC: Notquiteaplace is a powerful economic entity and always seeks to partake in benificial trade and diplomatic agreements. If your borders are open, our nation would trade and invest with and in your nation.

Hopefully some foreign investment and trade should help your country speed up it's recovery further. We would also exchange embassies. Our usual tersm are that you may have up to 50 armed guards in your embassy and receive diplomatic immunity to minor crimes. Your embassy would be located in our capital in easy reach of anything your abassador would need.

We would exchange economic data through our embassies, as well as information and would have it that any information known by the people of our nations is known at least by the government of the other.

**OOC Are you modern, post-modern or future tech? this post assumes you're modern, please disregard if PM or FT and simply accept my welcome :D ok /ooc**

*IC*

As the smoke and fog of civil war has blown away from Marenwence, the Codian states are moved to approve of the downfall and overthrow of the warmongering and oppressive Tam'Shakar. The Confederacy of Codian States congratulates you on your victory over the tyrants.

However, the Codian populace is strong in their belief that no situation warrants human slavery, and this belief, this conviction, must be represented in our foreign policy. (OOC referring to this post (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=392256)) The Confederacy of Codian States cannot lend aid or succor to any nation that supports the institution of human slavery, and moreover asks that you abolish this practice in a permanent, legal fashion. In return for this stride in policy, The Codian Federal Government is prepared to provide substantial financial aid to rebuild your infrastructures and country, as well as administrative aid to deal with your former oppressors.

Your country has a wonderful opportunity to rise above the rule of the past as a shining beacon of civilization. The Confederacy of Codian States hopes that you will make the right choice.

Sincerely,

Lulu Hirandan
Foreign Minister, Confederacy of Codian States

The White Tower Of New Endenia welcomes the Nation Of Marenwence to the World Stage. While our nation is small, we are forever interested in establishing strong economic and diplomatic ties with new nations and your nation is no exception. We invite your nation to establish an Embassy inside our capital of Haven and we would be pleased to arrange a meeting with your minister of finance to arrange economic agreements that would be mutually beneficial to both our nations. Also The White Tower is prepared to offer substantial financial aid in repairing any damaged infrastructure as well as any other aid you require. Please do not hesitate to contact the White Tower should you require anything at all.

ooc: Yep, for future reference, it is a modern tech nation, although a lot of the country appears medieval due to the castles and keeps set up by the Tam'Shakar. And Jipangunesia, I might just take you up on that offer to have a despot or two run off to your islands, thanks!

ic:

The Commonwealth of Marenwence would like to extend its most heartfelt thanks to Notquiteaplace, the Codian States, and New Endenia. We appreciate your recognition and furthermore would like to offer you the opportunity to set up embassies within Marenwence. To the honorable ambassadors of Notquiteaplace, we find your agreement quite acceptable and will be sending one Mister Maven Lann, one of our finest ambassadors. With him, will travel thirty armed escorts, though more may arrive in the future, if acceptable to you. Forgive this slight modification, as the army of Marenwence is not yet back to its former glory and we cannot expend the forces at this time.

Concerning any other countries, we would be happy to send ambassadors upon hearing your requests for escort limits. In response to the Cordian States request, we would first like to apologize for the initial fault. The country was in dire need of monetary funds. It was a poor choice, but one at the time which we had found more humane than the public executions called on by so many. We recognize the fault in our ways and, as per the suggestion by the Cordian States, we are prepared to sign the proper legal documents to permenantly abolish all forms of slavery. We hope for further contact and mutual benefit for all of your most esteemed countries.

The White Tower Of New Endenia is most hearten to hear from the nation of Marenwence and their willingness to sign an anti-slavery law. We would be most honoured if your ministers would come to Haven for a offical State Visit and a meeting with our national leader The Amrylin Seat. Please reply the soonest if you accept our invitation.

Upper Xen will recognize the Commonwealth of Marenwence, and provide it with any economic and military aid it desires. in particular, we were wondering if you wanted to enter into an alliance and a trade pact with us.

We look forward to doing business with you.

We are glad about all the news we heard. We have no problem with you sending less guards, you could send three children with plastic spoons if you wished. However 50 is a maximum. We congratulate you on moving foward from slavery, and our ambassador as well as many companies prospecting your nation find your medievil architecture most charming.

Several firms wish to set up sites in your nation, offering reasonable wages, which are above what you presently damaged economy manages on average. We hope this will speed up the recovery of your economy so that this is not the case. If you are desparate for military aid, we would be willing to help in defensive situations that you have been unjustly put into.

We are most pleased to know that so many in this world are still so willing to aid others in times of need. Custodian of the State David Geataro has stated in a public address today that he and his fellow ministers of state will personally make a visit to New Endenia in order to show their thanks and appreciation. During this same address, the mention of both trade pacts with Upper Xen and other friendly nations was very well received by the public. The economic offer of Notquiteaplace was received with equal vigor and enthusiasm, prompting large numbers of the unemployed to volunteer to begin construction of the groundwork for these new firms.

The reconstruction process is moving along smoothly, civilian and military doing their all to clean up the rubble. As I key this thank you to you all, Custodian Geataro is now doing a final walkthrough of our first hospitol to reopen after the war. We thank you for all your support.

Notquiteaplace economists theorise many of these people have jobs with the new firms. Our parliament is pushing for the firms to pay the workers some sort of wage or bonus to reflect the service they have given it, and while more right wing members resist, it looks like a fair majority will pass the motion for certain.

(OOC: a clipping from a newspaper printed two days before the notquiteaplace parliament pushed it through. Notquiteaplace is fairly free market but isn't afraid to step in and force firms to act in certain ways on the rare occasions it is required.)
