Chapter 1 - The Rising

The Republic has fallen. The old order is in ruin. The rebels have finally defeated the government. This outcome had been expected for almost 10 years now, the corrupt, incompetent throne of President Karr hanging on defiantly, fighting a costly and bitter battle. As the people's support grew for the rising, Karr used extreme measures, and there was death dealt to any who showed their hearts and minds were inclined to the rebels.

Civil liberties were eroded away as Karr suppressed any sign of rot within the system. The Legislative establishment had been reduced to a hallow mockery, with both the Lower and Upper houses of Parliament filled with Karr's cronies.

The Army stood right beside the dictator all the way, smashing resistance, both imaginary and real. Soon, all the enemies of the state, from those who opposed the encroachment in their minds to the die-hard rebels, who openly resisted staging attacks from the forests and mountains, were lumped together, with one label.

"Terrorist."

The subsequent War on Terror escalated at a horrendous rate. The Army was given permission to "aid the civil power". This act, which passed through the Parliament unanimously, instructed the armed forces of KommelianBerg to defend the government against internal enemies. Martial Law was soon declared.

The rebel offensive gained momentum as more and more citizen's joined, swelling the ranks of the movement. Some fought with an AK-74, others with a pen & paper, others with a printing press. The rebels, opposed to the oligarchy which had caused KommelianBerg to languish in such a sorrowful state, disseminated effective propaganda throughout the populance, from the suburbs to countryside.

So successfull was the rebel movement, so damaging were the government's actions, that the people swung behind the rebels, 100%. Criticism of Karr begin to heard in public, despite the troops on display on every street corner. People were still afraid, they lived in fear of retaliation, but they were more angry that afraid. They were more determined not to live their lives in a state of perpetual fear, a shameful existence, totally subservient.

Right up until the final offensive began on the capitol, the state-owned media [only media allowed to operate in KommelianBerg] still reported victories on every front against the "terrorists." But the writing was on the wall. Karr was just too much of a bastard to give in.
