- Damien System, Crossmanian space
Aboard the research vessel ICS Discovery, Dr. Franz Avel sat in his office looking over the final preperations for the Colbat weapon test. He stopped and looked out the porthole. The blackness of space was hidden by the nebulas and electromagnetic storms that surrounded the Damien system. It was the perfect place to conduct such secret research without anyone taking notice. Very few people new about this test. Only those Avel himself, the head scientists of the project, the Defense Secretary, and the Emperor. All the crew members aboard the ship knew only they were on an important mission, but nothing of what that mission was.
Avel grinned to himself. The enemies of the Imperium would be surprised when the Cobalt bomb was released upon them. As long as this test proved useful. The Damien system had nine planets in it. By sheer luck, six were habitable, but uninhabited. The perfect places to test the Neutron and Cobalt weapons.
"Doctor Avel," General Nelson called over the commlink. "We are ready to begin the test."
Avel hit the comm button, "I'll be right there." He got up and headed out of the office.

On the ships bridge Avel looked out the viewscreen at Damien VI, the planet the test was to take place on.
"Are the test subjects in place?", Avel asked, turning to General Nelson.
Nelson nodded and grinned, "Yes Doctor. The... subjects are in place and ready. The weapon is loaded and ready to fire."
"Good", Avel said smiling. "All stations, begin taking readings as soon as the weapon is fired. Is the survey ship in postion?"
"Yes Doctor", replied a crewman. "The are just outside the planet's orbit. They will begin their orbit of the planet directly after detonation."
"Excellent. Well then, let's not wait any longer. Fire the weapon on my mark... 3... 2... 1... fire!"

The missile streaked away from the Discovery towards the planet. It entered the planet's atmosphere above the target where it then exploded.

The bridge crew clapped and cheered, but were cut off by Avel.
"Readings? Life signs and structural situation of the buildings."
A crewman looked at his monitor. "Scanners indicate that all buildings are intact. The teams aboard the survey ship will go down for more accurate readings once the radiation levels have decreased. Life signs... none Doctor. Scanners indicate all life signs within the target area have ceased."
"Excellent!", Avel shouted. "Launch a Raptor to leave the system and send a message to the Emperor, 'test is a success'."
"Yes Doctor."
