The Democratic Colonies is today revealing to the general public its already underway SORNS program. SORNS, the Sustained Ocean Rearm, Repair, Resupply Network of Stations, is reportedly planned to cost over 200 billion dollars thus far. In its final form, the network will be composed of 27 seabourne military stations. All of the SORNS stations will be built in international waters
The SORNS program was conceived of as a method of both allowing Federated Navy vessels to rearm, repair and resupply at sea, as well as creating a network of stations that could conceivably survive a nuclear exchange that might destroy the major cities and military installations of the Democratic Colonies. As such, each of the SORNS stations is capable of functioning as a post-nuclear command centre for the remains of the Federated Military, and in addition to the conventional munitions stored onboard, each station is issued 96 nuclear Trident SLBMs for the rearming of up to four Ohio Class Nuclear Submarines, as well as a stockpile of 200 eighty kiloton tactical nuclear weapons that are capable of delivery from carrier aircraft.
The internal functions of each of the stations is protected by a minimum of 900mm of steel at their thinest points. Each station is armed with 600 Mk 41 VLS missile tubes, as well as Cobalt Phoenix Multiple Stage Surface to Air Missiles and CIWS arrays. Powerful sensors including RADAR and SONAR systems are installed at every SORNS station, allowing each to effectively direct the AV-17 Gray Gull (http://z13.invisionfree.com/The_NS_Draftroom/index.php?showtopic=2480&hl=) V/STOL attack aircraft, KB-75A Hydrotanker (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=10788770&postcount=15) aerial refueling seaplanes, and Spruance Class Destroyers typically assigned to them. Underwater networks of acoustic listening devices in conjunction with SONAR and RADAR will allow for the effective detection of any threat, while both onboard munitions and assigned forces will provide more than sufficient defensive capability for these mid-ocean facilities.
