The Santa Mayan Navy

Santa Maya

As Santa Maya is an island nation, we believe it is important to maintain a strong navy to ensure the well-being of civillian shipping within our territorial waters. We have built such a force, and are now announcing all unclassified details of the fleet in order to reassure any nation that wishes to trade with us by sea.

The navy is split into a number of patrol groups, each consisting of the following:

1 Squadron lead ship (Citadel or Manticore class)
4 Gallant class vessels
1 Resourceful class tender.

The details of these ships are given below:

Manticore class Patrol Boat Leader

Crew: 45
Length: 62 m
Speed: 45 knots
Armament:
MM40 block II Exocet
Javelin AAM
Melara 76mm gun
Bofors 30 mm guns
Propulsion: Diesel

Citadel class Patrol Boat Leader

Crew: 40
Length: 66 m
Speed: 32 knots
Armament:
Twin 155mm gun emplacement
2 x Pilum Inert Projectile Weapon System
Propulsion: Diesel

Gallant class Patrol Boat

Crew: 5
Length: 16 m
Speed: 52 knots
Armament:
Twin 155mm gun emplacement
Pilum IPWS
Propulsion: Gas Turbine

Resourceful class Tender

Crew: 63
Length: 127 m
Speed: 20 knots
Armament:
Pilum IPWS
2 x Phalanx CIWS
Propulsion: Diesel
Notes: This class is based on a modified Assault Platform, replacing Landing Craft accomodation with drydock facilities for four Gallant class vessels. It also carries consumable supplies allowing it to replenish the smaller vessels of its squadron ay sea.

Pilum IPWS
The Pilum IPWS is a verysimple design, basically a nine-barrelled large caliber harpoon launcher with three high-resolution digital cameras attached. The images from the three cameras are combined to give a 3D image of any vessel within range, which is then matched with onboard data files to find vital areas such as bridges etc. It also acts as a high-quality passive sensor array, allowing Gallant class vessels to trail suspicious vessels without giving away their position with active emissions.

OOC: Any thoughts on feasibility etc. of this... it should be noted that Gallants are purely coastal, and for longer ranges are transported aboard Resourcefuls.

OoC: Decided to take the patrol boats I gave you? Anyway, seems good, a bit more info on the ships would be nice and how many you currently have deployed.

seems good, the only thing i woudl question would be using 155mm(6.1inch) guns on such small vessels, normally i would coasnider them pretty muc restricted to frigate size and above, unless of coruse these are merely short barelled mortars or something, feel free to educate me on thier exact format.

Persoanlly i would go for a rapid fire medium gun system as my primary gun for light vessels (57mm systems being my particular choice) as they allow to engage most surface targets as well as air targets with reasonable success. Torpedos and missiles tend to mroe efficent "ship killer" weapons for light vessels. these don't even need to big thigns like Exocet, tubes for the likes of Sea Skua and pengiun can be mounted on very small boats as can largish packs of ATGMs or rockets.

At current, there are 13 squadrons in the Santa Mayan Navy, for a total of 65 vessels. Six of these are headed by Manticore class vessels and seven by Citadel class vessels. Patrol requirements for the territorial waters of Santa Maya result in eight squadrons being at sea at any one time, leaving five in various stages of maintenance or refit. The squadrons and their comanders are:
1st Squadron: Captain Jeb Weston, HMSMS CITADEL
2nd Squadron: Commander Rebecca Dalton, HMSMS STRONGHOLD
3rd Squadron: Comander David Rawnsley, HMSMS MANTICORE
4th Squadron: Commander Hannah Collins, HMSMS FORTRESS
5th Squadron: Captain Michael Kale, HMSMS CASTLE
6th Squadron: Commander Alan Janson, HMSMS BASILISK
7th Squadron: Commander Elizabeth Karr, HMSMS BASTION
8th Squadron: Commander Jonathan O'Brien, HMSMS GORGON
9th Squadron: Captain Nicola Tremaine, HMSMS LOUP GAROU
10th Squadron: Commander James Weston-Docker, HMSMS REDOUBT
11th Squadron: Commander Howard Murchisson, HMSMS CHIMERA
12th Squadron: Commander Sam Brooks, HMSMS FASTNESS
13th Squadron: Commander Ian Sykes, HMSMS GRIFFON

In addition, the Navy also includes several Sir Galahad class tankers and New Moon class resupply vessels, along with three Red Dragon class Assault Transports.

OOC:
Dumpsterdam: Yep, thanks for those patrol boats... they have now been integrated into our fleet as the Manticore class.

Crookfur: these are long-barreled 155mm guns, but the amount of ammunition carried is inadequate for a prolonged engagement, the space required reduces crew living conditions, and they become totally inaccurate in rough weather due to the Citadel class' seakeeping. On the other hand, ammunition is less expensive than missiles so live-fire gunnery drills can be carried out regularly, and they give the ships capability to engage both land and sea targets with some degree of success, even up to damaging much larger vessels if needed. In reality, they are mainly used for intimidation...seeing that big a barrel turn towards you tends to encourage pirates or smugglers to strike their colours.

OoC: Since basicly, that is what your navy was built for, patroling the coast and scaring the hell out of pirates.

If you wanted a combat capable fleet I would have given you several guided missile cruisers instead of patrol boats.

Oh and you need to finish up that other RP methinks, if you don't I'll ask you to join in some war games later on if thats alright, expect a TG on that later. :)

Just remember that for a navy to operate efficiently, you need an approximate 3:1 ratio for support personnel (dock workers, repairmen, etc.) to servicemen (sailors, officers, etc.).

OOC: The wargames may have to wait... I'm going down to visit my girlfriend in Portsmouth (other end of the country) tomorrow so won't be on for about a week.

Okay, it's taken me a bit longer than I expected, but here's the image...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v712/TheRowan/CitGalls.png

This shows the Fourth Patrol Squadron off Fitzroy Head. Visible are Her Majesty's Santa Mayan Ships FORTRESS (Citadel-class), DEFIANT, PEERLESSS and INCORRUPTIBLE (Gallant-Class). HMSMS SWIFT and the Tender SMV GENEROUS were detatched at the time this photograph was taken for maintenance.

With regards to the request from Dumpsterdam for Naval Wargames,we can now report that we have discharged all outstanding duties and can send the 5th and 8th Patrol Squadrons to take part. If it fits the parameters of the exercise, they will be accompanied by the Assault Vessel(LPD) HMSMS GOLD DRAGON, Oiler SMV SIR BORS and Resupply Vessel SMV FULL MOON. Our Exercise command vessel will be the frigate HMSMS GOOSE GREEN, assuming she completes a satisfactory shakedown cruise before then.

OOC: Sorry for the delay, got back here and was straight into exams. If you're willing to let me bring the Goose Green along, she has some novel features I look forward to trying out. TG or post here if you're interested in the details.

I perfer my own ships, which 95% of my navy is made up of submerging vessels, and I had a lot of RPs to prove this (oddly enough that was on the old forums and lost them all). I have a lot of my works in my storefront, and if you are interested, a Secret Navy (the nickname Yuke gave mine) maybe a good thing for your small nation, expecially with my advanced quieting and such technologies.
