OOC: 45 damn days went into R&D of the Plasmatic Pulse Disintegrator, this thing is baaaaaaaad... its gonna be hard NOT to notice this, so if people want to jump in and investigate what the heck just happened, the DawnRunner fleet is going to remain in the area taking readings on the remains of the asteroid field.

First, there was nothing... nothing beyond a small field of medium sized asteroids floating through the void between the stars. None of the asteroids measured more than a hundred kilometers across. The largest one, as a matter of fact, labeled GPPE 24, was just a couple inches longer than 97.5 kilometers in diameter.

Then, there was Eternity 1. No fanfare. No pop. Not even an obligatory wobble in the space time continuum. It just... appeared there, as though it always had been there. Of somewhat haphazard design, it appeared as though Eternity 1 was nothing more than a godulan cannon cruiser, known for the four devastating Protium Arc Cannons they would typically fire in a full spread across enemy lines.

However, Eternity 1 featured several odd adjustments. For one, it had no cannons, no crew quarters, nothing beyond rudimentary engine systems, shielding, and the experimental weapon that had taken the place of its main battery. Where entire habitation blocks had been removed, and secondary weapons batteries gutted, instead rested enough power generators to keep an entire continent in full running order.

It appeared for all the world as though no human souls manipulated the reduced systems, however, one man rested in a control suite no larger than the cockpit of a StarBolt Skirmish Fighter.

Several hundred thousand kilometers away, a full DawnRunner fleet drifted through space, observing the modified cannon cruiser as it completed its Probability Drive's first and likely only iteration.

"DawnRunner command, this is Eternity 1, reporting successful Probability Iteration to firing range, over."

"Roger that, Eternity 1, establish targeting solution and await our command to initiate experimental firing."

"Roger DawnRunner command, establishing targeting solution now."

The cruiser twirled on its various respective axes until the lone cannon on its nose pointed directly towards GPPE 24. The rock floated innocently before the pilots targeting reticule, directly in the crosshairs.

"DawnRunner command, this is Eternity 1, targeting solution established."

"Roger that, Eternity 1, initiate experimental firing... now. Good luck, adjutant."

"Roger DawnRunner command, initiating. Fire will commence in ten... nine... eight..."

The pilot's heart raced, uncertain as to whether the cannon would fire, or the cruiser would be vaporized. He heard the power plants beneath and behind him roaring to life as they siphoned energy from protospace and pumped it all into the cannon.

"Three... two... one... firing, I repeat..."

A small shaft of light erupted from the cannon, jabbing at GPPE 24 annoyingly with its bluish glow. The power plants practically screamed in agony all around the pilot, and he had to shut off his hearing to block out the deafening screech of the generators.

Then, with an odd sense of finality, the engines cut out, and a single globule of what appeared to be pure energy lanced out from the cruiser, colliding with the asteroid with what would have been a tremendous crashing of energy discharges, had it not occured in the airless environs of space.

No explosion followed, however. The Adjutant, who kept his eyes on the entire process, saw what appeared to be a region of bluish white energy spreading out across the asteroid's bulk, accompanied with a spectacular field of electrical discharges and... glittering... something was glittering... like little stars in a bluish sky...

As the energy field reached the edge of the visible half of the asteroid, the first thing the pilot noticed was that either two things were happening: Either the asteroid was getting further away, or it was shrinking. He checked his rangefinder. Same reading. The asteroid was wasting away!

He turned back to watch as the asteroid continued its last few moments of existence. It just shrunk, and shrunk, and shrunk, as lightning and energy played across its surface. sixty kilometer diameter... fifty... forty... thirty... twenty... ten...

Then, just like that, all that remained of the asteroid was a single little mote of energy. And even that was slowly shrinking away. The pilot rested there, in his support harness, watching the scene with awe. It just... faded away! he thought to himself.

THEN the explosion happened.

Releasing the energy generated by tearing each and every single one of the component molecules of the asteroid apart, then condensing them down to but a mere speck, the DawnRunner fleet watched as a miniature big bang shattered the surrounding area in a massive shockwave of pure primal energy, nearly vaporizing Eternity 1 and smashing surrounding asteroids into powder.

As the light faded, a single comm blip pinged happily on the Communications Adjutant's control panel. Activating the channel, the pilot's voice came through:

"SON OF A BITCH! NEXT TIME YOU BASTARDS WANT TO FIRE THAT THING OFF, PICK A LONGER RANGE, YOU ASSHOLES! I NEARLY PISSED MY... oh, wait... could somebody bring me a fresh set of clothes when y'all reel me back in? And some nausea medicine too... that shockwave knocked me around like a pingpong ball in a game of nitro-topped paddles... um... over."

"Roger that Eternity 1. Considering what you just went through, I'm surprised soiling your underoos is the only thing that you did."

"I screamed like a little girl too. I didn't even know I COULD."

The Admiral of the DawnRunner fleet chuckled at that last statement, then turned to the helmsman. "Get us an iteration as close to that pod as you can and pick that lucky bastard up," he turned to the Ops Adjutant, "And you, make certain that the guy has a fresh uniform and some knock-em-the-hell-out-juice as soon as he gets out, and tell the mess hall to give that man the biggest damn meal he's ever seen as soon as he wants it..."

OOC:Well, if that isn't the FT equivalent of a nuke, I don't know what is.

IC: A Ship dropped out of transwarp, This ship had an unusual design, this was because It looked exactly like a giant winged snake with two Blade like talons attached to a pair of arms. On each of the Wing sections The word Akroma Glowed brightly in both Pure Sliverese, and English. The ship also Flapped Slithered like a snake and Flapped its wings as it moved, apperently as an odd form of propulsion. a hail was sent out, and the voice in the message was hissing in Fluent English.

"This is the Akroma, Her magesty the Sliver Queen has recieved word that a weapon of Great power was recently fired here, and wishes to know what it was, and if you have any ill will towards The Eternal Dominion of Warhaven."

"Sir, a ship has dropped out of... the computer says 'transwarp', and is asking about the explosion. And whether or not we intend to be mad at them anytime soon."

Admiral Cerval chuckled somewhat about that last part. "Ill will and grudges, eh? Send this response: 'Weapons Testing, didn't expect the explosion. We're not shooting at you, so chances are you're on our good side.'

"Ops, move a couple more of the sensor platforms into the dust cloud and keep up with the readings. I want to get all the information we can afore we head back."

A silent beeping noise sounded on the control panel in an ES listening outpost. The operator sat up from his slouch and read the data read out.
"What the hell? Commander, sir!"
A tall, lanky, yet confident looking officer put down the IDAD he was reading and walked over to the station.

"What is it?"
"Sir, it looks like a huge energy discharge of some weird energy just happened somewhere in Godulan space...I'm also getting some strange energy readouts. Looks something like pure energy, just undiluted power."

The commander skimmed the data readout, as his face descended into horror.
"God damn, something like this could wipe out half our whole home world if the power output was just a bit higher..." he paused as he regained his composure, and returned to the calm commander the rest of the stations personnel was used to, "...alright, inform the High Command immediately, priority one, now."

The operator snapped into motion.
"Yes sir,” he responded as he turned to this console, “this is Lima-Oscar 3-9-4 sending message on a priority one channel to the High Command…”

-----Godulan Fleet Monitoring Testing of the “Plasmatic Pulse Disintegrator”-----

We’ve recently detected a massive energy surge somewhere in your space. By the looks of it, it doesn’t seem too benign. We wish to inquire just what the hell happened, what caused it, and whether or not we are at any risk of finding our own space bursting with the same type of energy discharge.

A Chronosian sensor array had went wild with activity soon after the test; as resonance from the immense detonation flooded the circuits. In due time, a small probe; circular; tumbling through the void with an almost eldritch glow; shimmerign with the foul energies of the warp; unfolding to reveal a multitude of small eye like drones; which flitted about, hissing and screeching,.

"We serve the Imperium of Chronosia; we have detected something vast and great, and require knowledge of it. The Daemon Emperor bids you relinquish your understandings....Tell what has transpired"

OOC: This isn't in Godulan space, its pretty much in some generic unclaimed spot in the expanses between the stars. "An explosion out in the middle of nowhere" would be a more accurate description.

To Warhaven:

Unfortunately, diplomacy will have to wait until we return to Godulan Earth, as we cannot send direct messages to the homeland. We would be pleased to forward your wishes to the Diplomatic Corps, however, and can expect envoys as earliest opportunity.

"We thank you for you kindness and understanding. When you are ready Use this same frequency to contact Riptide and let us know you are coming."

With that, the ship actually managed something resembling a bow, whichwas also an unusual turning method, and Jumped into transwarp.

Some time later:

Corbox sat in his new... well... Archonal Command Center. He liked to call it that, anyway. It was an odd setup. A room with nothing more than a desk, a single light over said desk, and 24 viewscreens in a six-by-four setup facing said desk. Sound-proofed, bomb-proofed, and with only one point of entry, unless somebody somehow managed to fit into the ventilation system.

But... considering the fact that ventilation was made up of many inch-wide tubes rather than one big one, that in itself was a feat.

He didn't like all the security measures, though he did feel somewhat comforted that some of his soldiers were working security through the entire Manhattan Archonal HeadQuarters. Why they feel the need for all these... frivolous measures is beyond me. The only REAL assassination attempts we've ever experienced was because of those damned nazis.

He made a note to himself to be an Archon that liked to take walks.

One of the viewscreens before him flickered on. "Sir... err... Archon Corbox, sir... we have preliminary results of the first Plasmatic Pulse Disintegrator firing."

"How does this concern me? I'm not in command anymore."

"Executive order sir. Cassius himself said that while you're not high commander of the Defense Directorate, we still report to you on all matters regarding military research. He said something about keeping you useful."

"He did, did he? Well then, lets hear it. Abridged version if you will, send me the full report so I can read it myself later."

"Already sent sir. Cerval, the Admiral overseeing the experiment, reports that the firing went largely as expected sir, except for one thing. Evidently, the disintegrator doesn't exactly do what we thought it does, and a massive explosion tore the cannon ship apart."

Corbox leaned back and thought for a moment. How the hell did that happen?

"It... turned the asteroid field to powder, sir. The pilot managed to get through with his control pod because of higher shielding, but everything within about... thirty thousand kilometers was pulverized.

"Good god... that would destroy an entire planet!"

"No sir."

"What's that?"

"The disintegration would destroy an entire planet. The explosion RESULTING from the disintegration would likely destabilize the planet's host star system."

"Can it manage that?"

"I don't know sir, I'm just the messenger. One thing that's been bothering me though, after reading this stuff myself..."

"Spit it out."

"Our voidshields, sir. They're programmed to activate when they detect superlasers powering up, and to deflect gravity weapons, but its all automated sir."

"I said spit it out."

"Sir, the Plasmatic Pulse Cannon would be caught by our Voidshields."

"Oh. Oh... SHIT."

"If we intend to put that on any ship of ours, we'd have to turn off the voidshields in order to activate the cannon, and that would leave us virtually defenseless to enemy superweapons."

"So we would have to choose between being able to swing the sword and raise the shield."

"Interesting analogy, sir."

"Its crap and you know it. I'll relay the findings on to Cassius and we'll try to work out a plan... thanks for that little concern of yours. Pointed out a nasty little chink in the game plan there."

IC:

Cassius read through the annotated experimental firing report, then read through Corbox's additional commentary regarding the Plasmatic Pulse Cannons and the VoidShield systems.

"So, this cannon is capable of utterly annihilating a spherical body some 100km in diameter, that we know. But it would set off our own voidshield generators if used in actual combat, do I interpret this correctly?"

Corbox's face displayed from one of the center-most viewscreens before Cassius. The former general gave a curt nod of affirmation.

"Did you know that General Lear has already given her recommendations on how to deal with this particular... issue?"

"I did not, sir... er... Cassius. I would like to know her take on this if possible."

"Indeed you shall, Corbox. I told you before that she is something of a paragon when it comes to ruthlessness, and I have to admit she surprised even me with her recommendation. The Plasmatic Pulse Burst is rather... slow moving, is it not?"

"It appears to be as fast as a rail gun shot, compared to flux cannon bursts, its a snail."

"So that presents two issues in one: One, our voidshields would detect and react to the cannon's powering up. Two, between fire and impact, the target would have plenty of time to maneuver out of the way, especially at extreme range, correct?"

After some thought, Corbox nodded again. "The disintegrator burst would simply pass by and do nothing, if it misses."

"One further question, and I shall tell you the full breadth of General Lear's tactics... You understand what happens when a surge of energy enters a Voidshield, correct?"

"Boom."

"Exactly. General Lear has recommended that if we are ever to emplace a Plasmatic Pulse Disintegrator Cannon on a vessel equipped with voidshields, we should also give it a set of manually operated voidshields, set to activate and absorb the PPD burst should it miss its intended target. The resulting explosion would likely cause a shatterspace anomaly that would destroy or cripple everything within... five thousand kilometers? Up to fifteen thousand if unshielded vessels are caught within the shockwave.

"One simply turns off the voidshields, shunts all non-defensive weapon energy into shields and PPD power charging, then reverts to normal attack posture after the cannon has fired. Fire from extreme range only, and if the shot misses, detonate it and take as many of the enemy as possible."

"By... well, I'd say by the archons, but I AM one now... what do Archons say?"

"We prefer to go with the classics. 'God DAMN' appears to be the in thing for us at the moment."

"Either way, I can see the Defense Directorate is in good hands..."

Admiral Cerval finished off his latest mug of pepper coffee and looked at the displays reading out on the main viewscreen. He had just finished his lunch and was curious as to whether he had missed anything of even mediocre importance.

"Any movements from the Chronosian probe thingie? Or is it just sitting there, staring at us and chittering as usual?"

"Nothing new sir," the sensors adjutant replied without turning from his control console, "Although some of the guys down in cryptology are taking some interest in the weird noises that thing's cutting loose with."

"Huh. Any response from the Kyanges people... or anybody else for that matter?"

"Well, beyond the freaky snakebirdcrab things, and those other two people who seem to be chewing on our words, nobody appears to be very interested in what happened here. Speaking of which," the adjutant turned from his display, "I've been meaning to ask, why did we test it in this dimension? We could have tested it in the home universe and gotten away with keeping it a secret."

"Had to be certain that it would work in this dimension. Would suck to pump all this funding into a power-chugging-ubergun only to have it fizzle in the dimension it would be most likely to see use. The fact that so few people seem to downright CARE about the fact that a spot devoid of any stars in general somehow blossomed into a fireball rivaling a B-class star in brightness is nothing short of... spooky. Although the fact that we might have scored a diplomatic contact out of it would be something of a blessing anyway."

"What about the Chronosians?"

"Feh! General Lear told me before we left that if the Galactic Empire learned of this, all the better. I'm more surprised that the Galactic Republic hasn't sent somebody over to check out what the hell happened, if anything."
