OOC: 45 damn days went into R&D of the Plasmatic Pulse Disintegrator, this thing is baaaaaaaad... its gonna be hard NOT to notice this, so if people want to jump in and investigate what the heck just happened, the DawnRunner fleet is going to remain in the area taking readings on the remains of the asteroid field.
First, there was nothing... nothing beyond a small field of medium sized asteroids floating through the void between the stars. None of the asteroids measured more than a hundred kilometers across. The largest one, as a matter of fact, labeled GPPE 24, was just a couple inches longer than 97.5 kilometers in diameter.
Then, there was Eternity 1. No fanfare. No pop. Not even an obligatory wobble in the space time continuum. It just... appeared there, as though it always had been there. Of somewhat haphazard design, it appeared as though Eternity 1 was nothing more than a godulan cannon cruiser, known for the four devastating Protium Arc Cannons they would typically fire in a full spread across enemy lines.
However, Eternity 1 featured several odd adjustments. For one, it had no cannons, no crew quarters, nothing beyond rudimentary engine systems, shielding, and the experimental weapon that had taken the place of its main battery. Where entire habitation blocks had been removed, and secondary weapons batteries gutted, instead rested enough power generators to keep an entire continent in full running order.
It appeared for all the world as though no human souls manipulated the reduced systems, however, one man rested in a control suite no larger than the cockpit of a StarBolt Skirmish Fighter.
Several hundred thousand kilometers away, a full DawnRunner fleet drifted through space, observing the modified cannon cruiser as it completed its Probability Drive's first and likely only iteration.
"DawnRunner command, this is Eternity 1, reporting successful Probability Iteration to firing range, over."
"Roger that, Eternity 1, establish targeting solution and await our command to initiate experimental firing."
"Roger DawnRunner command, establishing targeting solution now."
The cruiser twirled on its various respective axes until the lone cannon on its nose pointed directly towards GPPE 24. The rock floated innocently before the pilots targeting reticule, directly in the crosshairs.
"DawnRunner command, this is Eternity 1, targeting solution established."
"Roger that, Eternity 1, initiate experimental firing... now. Good luck, adjutant."
"Roger DawnRunner command, initiating. Fire will commence in ten... nine... eight..."
The pilot's heart raced, uncertain as to whether the cannon would fire, or the cruiser would be vaporized. He heard the power plants beneath and behind him roaring to life as they siphoned energy from protospace and pumped it all into the cannon.
"Three... two... one... firing, I repeat..."
A small shaft of light erupted from the cannon, jabbing at GPPE 24 annoyingly with its bluish glow. The power plants practically screamed in agony all around the pilot, and he had to shut off his hearing to block out the deafening screech of the generators.
Then, with an odd sense of finality, the engines cut out, and a single globule of what appeared to be pure energy lanced out from the cruiser, colliding with the asteroid with what would have been a tremendous crashing of energy discharges, had it not occured in the airless environs of space.
No explosion followed, however. The Adjutant, who kept his eyes on the entire process, saw what appeared to be a region of bluish white energy spreading out across the asteroid's bulk, accompanied with a spectacular field of electrical discharges and... glittering... something was glittering... like little stars in a bluish sky...
As the energy field reached the edge of the visible half of the asteroid, the first thing the pilot noticed was that either two things were happening: Either the asteroid was getting further away, or it was shrinking. He checked his rangefinder. Same reading. The asteroid was wasting away!
He turned back to watch as the asteroid continued its last few moments of existence. It just shrunk, and shrunk, and shrunk, as lightning and energy played across its surface. sixty kilometer diameter... fifty... forty... thirty... twenty... ten...
Then, just like that, all that remained of the asteroid was a single little mote of energy. And even that was slowly shrinking away. The pilot rested there, in his support harness, watching the scene with awe. It just... faded away! he thought to himself.
THEN the explosion happened.
Releasing the energy generated by tearing each and every single one of the component molecules of the asteroid apart, then condensing them down to but a mere speck, the DawnRunner fleet watched as a miniature big bang shattered the surrounding area in a massive shockwave of pure primal energy, nearly vaporizing Eternity 1 and smashing surrounding asteroids into powder.
As the light faded, a single comm blip pinged happily on the Communications Adjutant's control panel. Activating the channel, the pilot's voice came through:
"SON OF A BITCH! NEXT TIME YOU BASTARDS WANT TO FIRE THAT THING OFF, PICK A LONGER RANGE, YOU ASSHOLES! I NEARLY PISSED MY... oh, wait... could somebody bring me a fresh set of clothes when y'all reel me back in? And some nausea medicine too... that shockwave knocked me around like a pingpong ball in a game of nitro-topped paddles... um... over."
"Roger that Eternity 1. Considering what you just went through, I'm surprised soiling your underoos is the only thing that you did."
"I screamed like a little girl too. I didn't even know I COULD."
The Admiral of the DawnRunner fleet chuckled at that last statement, then turned to the helmsman. "Get us an iteration as close to that pod as you can and pick that lucky bastard up," he turned to the Ops Adjutant, "And you, make certain that the guy has a fresh uniform and some knock-em-the-hell-out-juice as soon as he gets out, and tell the mess hall to give that man the biggest damn meal he's ever seen as soon as he wants it..."
