Mikhail Barin stared down at the brief statement below him. Given the troubles experienced by his new-found ally in Lindim it was a most appropriate measure to be taken – but it was going to anger the private companies that had exhausted a great amount of resources dedicated to the soon to be defunct cause. He placed the light wire-frame glasses upon his nose and smiled up at the people before, all members of the evil press. Evil, though, was perhaps too strong a word. Or not. He really did detest the media.

“Ladies, gentlemen, citizens of the Commonwealth, recently the Commonwealth of Azazia assisted the Incorporated Islands of Lindim in quelling a massive uprising that threatened the very fabric of their society. In the ensuing conflict, both nations witnessed horrific tragedies unfold that saw the Mr. Hyde of nuclear-power rear its awful head. A nuclear-powered cruiser of the Commonwealth sunk off the coast of Lindim during a naval engagement and due to damage received radiation has been leaking into the waters at a tremendous rate. Currently, the Commonwealth is dispatching salvage ships that will raise the hull of the cruiser and bring back to the Commonwealth for decontamination and scrapping. At the same time, a missing nuclear warhead from Lindim detonated in the Commonwealth killing over 300,000 individuals in one of the worst tragedies to befall the Commonwealth in the modern era. In the end, however, both nations prevailed and the elected government was restored along with peace.”

“In the conclusion of the conflict, the government of Prime Minister Fuego and myself have concluded that due to the weakened state of Lindim and the temporary instability in certain islands of the Commonwealth it is to the advantage of both states to sign a mutual defence treaty that will establish in part also establish military bases of the Commonwealth in Lindim and likewise Lindimese bases in the Commonwealth. The immediate use of these facilities will be to provide centralized locations for the appropriation of the massive amount of humanitarian relief to be provided by the Commonwealth and other nations involved in the reconstruction. In addition, the Commonwealth will be providing several billion Commonwealth Credits in economic aid to Lindim over the next few decades to help restore the nation’s political, economic, and military infrastructure – which will ultimately help the quick revitalization of the Lindimese economy.”

“In addition to these acts with Lindim, the Commonwealth of Azazia is immediately adapting two new measures. The first of which will be the procurement of new vessels for the Royal Navy which lost a total of eight ships and over 1,500 men and women. These new vessels will all be powered by non-nuclear means and will serve as the backbone of the new Commonwealth carrier battle group strategy, which is in the final stages of completion. In the meanwhile, by my order, I have closed the waters of the Commonwealth to all military and commercial traffic that utilizes nuclear propulsion, or any other means of propulsion that results in the production of radioactive by-products. Any vessel intercepted in Commonwealth territory will be escorted back to international waters and their governments warned, we will not tolerate any violations of this law. Of course, the Commonwealth will continue to respect similar laws in other nations where applicable.”

“Thank you all, good day.” Barin nodded slightly to the crowd and proceeded to place his small speech back on the podium to be cleared out later by an aide. He thought it went well, which was good. For the times were changing in the Commonwealth, the times were changing.
