To Modernize a Nation; Step one, the Republic Class (FT NEW SHIP)

Industrial Experiment

Hello, I am Fleet Marshall Jane Yunaso. I am here to introduce to you, the representatives of the Imperial Republic, the newest part of a plan to revive the Republic as a naval power in this strife filled galaxy we live in.

While the resources of the Imperial Republic are already stretched thin due to Beta Project (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=361999), the severe out-datedness of the Imperial navy weighs heavy on the mind of every citizen of the great Republic. There are actually civilian mercenary ships in service throughout Imperial space that can match or even out-do the smaller capital ships of the Imperial Navy. While such ships as the Claw class gunboats are up-to-date and new enough that order is still sufficiently maintained throughout the Republic, the main ships of the line of the navy are evenly matched enough with current civilian designs that any rebellion by an advanced enough force would leave the navy hard-pressed to stamp it out.

Any fully modern, foriegn power attempting to invade the Republic would easily destroy the naval defense forces of most outer systems and have only a moderately harder time with inner colonies. This has reached the point where independent naval historians have begun to claim that the Republic's greatest defensive asset is not its large navy or widely scattered and powerful sensor outposts, but it's remote and unknown location. Should the Republic become better known around the galaxy, they say, the threat to our well-being would be quite immenint.

As such, several of the greatest living naval engineering corps have been chartered to design a new capitalship class that will be able to defend Imperial space with grace and raw power. After several years of work, five different designs were selected for production. Considering the strained resource allotment of the Republic due to Beta Project and the preoccupation of naval shipyards with refitting a small number Goliath Dreadnought ships to a more modern level, as opposed to the two-century old hulks they once were, only one new ship from each class would be constructed at a time.

The first ship to be built would no doubt be the greatest.

The I.N.V. Republic will be the first true battleship built by the Republic in well over a thousand years, the last battleship class having been produced in the years leading up to the Proge wars. The dominance of small, fast destroyers and corvettes in that war lead to a complete change in strategic thinking throughout the Republic and her remaining colonies. At the time, the largest vessels still in production were battlecruisers, the ancestors of the current Hammer class vessels.

Now, with the advent of shielding technology, the age of the battleship has returned, supplanting the Goliath class dreadnought ships and the like. The dreadnought, while holding the advantage of being able to absorb fire in a time before energy shielding, is just too unwieldy to consider, especially with her severe out-datedness. The down-sizing of the entire class, along with the complete scrapping of many of the vessels, has lead to a gap in the large capitalship niche of the Imperial navy. Thus, the Republic class battleships.

The Republic, or SBB-1 in honor of her uniqueness among naval ships, will stand un-matched in terms of raw power and speed in a ship her size. Though the Goliath Refit Mk II will remain as a large part of the Imperial navy, the former flag role she held will be filled by the Republic class. Initially, the battleships will be outnumbered by the dreadnoughts, but as production facilities are turned towards putting out these new behemoths, the Republic class will grow.

Now, without further ado, the specifications of the new class.

SBB-1

Though smaller than the older SDN-3/B class, the SBB-1 class is the single most advanced ship in the Imperial Navy. The mutliple design phases it went through worked out any kinks in the mainly shining new systems and cutting edge technology that went into the ship. Though there was no where near the needed power to put an Atomic Dis-assembly ray on the ship, barring completely stripping it of nearly all other weaponry, it has been provided with sufficient command and control functions to be able to command a fleet of Ripper class pocket battleships, the only Imperial vessel currently out-fitted with this weapon. The SBB-1 also retains the ability to deal out equal punishment by means overwhelming power, as opposed to the finnese an ADR applies. Designed to fit the role of flagship and heavy fleet combatant, the SBB-1, known to the public as the Republic class, fulfills this role quite nicely. Though there are currently none in existance, the hull for the first one has been lain down, and fifteen are currently on order from the Republican Electorate.

The most noticable features of this ship include the complete lack of coil point defense cannons. This is due to recent advances in the technology that makes up HCE cannons, most notably the increase in power efficiency and turret rotation rate. Whereas previous HCE cannons simply could not be placed into turrets due to power constraints, a breakthrough in energy transfer systems on the main research station in orbit of the Alpha Station Naval Yards has led to the ability to use HCE cannons as point defense cannons. Not only is this a breakthrough in the effectiveness of point defense for Imperial ships, but this also means the point defense cannon can be used for direct assault on enemy capitalships.

Whereas in the past the metallic slugs the coil-gun point defense cannons projected just bounced off almost all kinds of capitalship shields, HCE cannons pack enough power to be used on all types of energy shielding known to the Republic. As such, the point defense system of the Republic class, along with the four other new ship classes, will be fully able to double as an offensive weapon.

Another change involves the introduction of a new type of weapon, the Linear Acceleration cannon. Though they are based off an ancient technology, these cannons use old weapons known as railguns that are arranged in an array to allow many thousands of tiny metallic slugs to be proppelled out of the cannon at a significant fraction of thew speed of light. This weapon is very effective at combating clouds of smaller vessels, usually fighters or low-end corvettes.

One more new addition is a major change in the plasma cannons of the Republic class. Fore-going the out-dated design of a double vent port overlayed by a magnetic field generator, the new design arranged four vent powers over a central field generator that allows the plasma to be collected before the beam fires, giving the plasma cannon the same capability of power control that AM/M reactionary cannons have had since inception.

The greatest change is the introduction of an entirely new type of anti-matter cannon. While previous designs used a shallow disk with magnetic field generator at the center and opposing streams of hydrogen and anti-hydrogen to generate the reactionary energy, this new idea uses a large tube filled with hydrogen and lined with much smaller magnetic field generators. There is an anti-matter projector located in the rear of the tube, with the opposite end being open to space but policed by a powerful magnetic field.

This configuration allows for greatly reduced charge times, meaning power-levels previously thought unusable due to time constraints in battle become available to the captain of any Republic class battleship.

Thank you, ladies and gentlemen, for attending this briefing. While the Republic maintains a strict policy of not selling any of its technology, both due to its disinterest with money and in the interest of guarding its secrets, the plans for an export version of this new battleship are being drawn up and are expected to go on sale in the form of limited run blueprint sales sometime in the next several years. Seeing as there is no use of money or currency of any kind, certain tonnages of quadrinanium, the heaviest known element and best for matter conversion, will be accept as payment. These tonnages will be outlined when the export version is finalized and introduced.

Good day to you all, this is Fleet Marshall Jane Yunaso of the Human Imperial Republic of Industrial Experiment, signing off.

Maybe if I bump it late it won't be pushed to the second page in 3.4 seconds.

Well, all I can say is, if the Republic ever needs yards for construction of the Republic class, we've plenty to offer.

Nice ship IE. Personnaly I prefer going with simpler DOGA designs.

Thanks Xess. I kinda figured this one deserved special attention, what with the huge role it's filling.

And GZ, while I appreciate the offer, I don't think I'll be needing any assistance construction wise.

By the way, though, you guys'll love step two. It isn't military pretty much at all...
