BREAKING NEWS
TIMIOCATO - It has been reported that an earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale has occurred in southern Pacitalia. The earthquake happened at around 10:24 pm Central Time. The epicentre was measured to have been on the East Pacific Fault, 91 km out to sea, south-southwest of Timiocato, Pacitalia's largest city.
Diagram of this Earthquake (Map) (http://kfox.gamehorizons.net/Pacitalia/quake_8Jan_diagram.jpg)
The tremor was felt up the western coast of Pacitalia, especially on the islands where palm trees were felled by the fierce shaking, which lasted about 28 seconds. In Timiocato, the shaking was delayed by seven seconds from the epicentre and had a maximum power of 5.1 on the Richter scale. Cracks have been discovered in several of the older buildings in Timiocato, but they are without a doubt fixable.
Puntafora, a city of 6 million about 100 km northwest of Timiocato, felt waves measuring around 3.6 on the scale. Saronno, about 75 km northeast, felt a maximum strength of 4.0.
There are reports of some apartment buildings on the islands telescoping or just imploding from the shaking, which was 74 times the normal ground movement. Most older apartment buildings on the islands on softer terrain like sands simply crumbled to the ground.
Preliminary reports estimate about 150 dead on the islands, 1 dead in Timiocato (from a bookshelf crushing an old lady). Over 3,000 are still missing; thankfully most of the citizens and travellers on the islands have been accounted for. There was no tsunami resulting from the earthquake because the fault is too deep in the ground to have an effect on the ocean.
More information as it comes in.

Thank you so much for your quick reply and immediate contribution to the cleanup efforts. We appreciate that we have a nation like Canada to count on. Your relief money will be put to good use, and we'll be more than happy to return the favour should a natural disaster ever happen in Canada. DART is more than welcome to help with the cleanup.Sincerely,

I believe I can speak for the Canadian people and myself that we are more then welcome to serve the Pacitalian people in this time and need. We'll also offer to send investigations into the area, and if there are Pacitlian orphans with family in the Federal Republic of Canada, they are more then welcome to come to our nation.
DART will be dispatched within a half and hour to be deployed in regions striked. From my Defense Secretary, eighteen thousand members of the DART will be splitted up in this area and will work cooperatively with the Pacitalian Armed Forces.
Sincerely in good faith,
President Anthony R. Wittrock

As a nation who has the misfortune of being placed on the edge of the Arabian plate, we understand the problems with "living on the edge". We are ppledging an amount of $10 million to kick start the effort to repair the damage. Please be aware of the aftershocks that will occur and these will further test the stability of already compromised structures.
God bless

We would like to thank our fellow member of the ACN for their support on the earthquake repairs. We would also like to thank Jeruselem for their concern about aftershocks and building safety/stability.Rabastano Grimuso

OOC: Don't worry, we know full well about earthquakes and aftershocks. The East Pacific Fault runs all the way down the west coast of Pacitalia, and there were three considerable earthquakes last year. The EPF is extremely volatile and the Pacitalian government has spent almost $250 billion seismically upgrading infrastructure and shoring up land to protect citizens from the effects of an earthquake such as this one. The casualties were kept low as they were due to our upgrading work, which has been principally centred on the islands.

We do not intend to harm your hospital ships. Not only do they have no military value, but attacking them would be immoral and wasteful.

-Secretary of Diplomacy Chong MouaUnder the circumstances, I believe you would understand if I am more than a little reluctant to take you at your word. After all, you attempted to kill our President. Anyone whose leader willfully attempted an assassination of another leader while at peace talks is not worth an inch of trust.

OOC: RB and Sarzonia, you can lower your contributions to 2 and 1.75 billion, respectively, if you feel like it. Although very much appreciated, your current numbers are quite a bit of money for relatively minor to moderate damage.

[OOC: Granted, a lot of prices are dramatically out of whack in the NS world, but $500 billion is still a very high price for minor to moderate damage. Be that as it may, I'll lower my figure also.]

OOC: You have a few factual...f***ups there.
1. The Richter scale is used at the quake's epicenter. The measurement there is what it was. A quake that storng should be felt for a few hundred miles around.
2. That quake should have caused at least small tsunamis.
I was planning to have a similar event, but decided to keep going with my current civil war one.

It did cause a tsunami, just not big enough ones to do any damage to the beachfront areas. And yes, I know that the Richter scale measurement was for the epicenter. When I gave a measurement for Timiocato, it was how strong the earthquake felt in proportion to what it would be on the scale.

- GLNP takeout war
