Official Press Release from the UCTCR:
By the order of Premier V. Ilneyov, the great island nation of Cuba will begin fortification immediately. This was deemed necessary to the island due to the overly-aggressive nations to our North, and the possible rebels to our South. The fortification will employ approximately 3 million workers for one year. It is expected that the operation will cost somewhere in the vicinity of 30 billion dollars, yet that is a high price that has no meaning in the UCTCR. (END)
The expected defenses are as follows:
--At military harbors, there will be a track system employed on sea bottom to tow military ships through an unmarked minefield. Buildings of importance will be fortified structurally, and ammunition and fuel dumps will be forced below ground.
--Civilian harbors will employ a system of artificial islands parallel to the shore, requiring a merchant ship to "zig-zag" into the harbor. This will minimize the damage should a ship be on a fatal course.
--Along the coastline in open areas, giant sea fortresses will be created, and covered by natural terrain. Every 3 miles of coastline will harbor 2 hidden SAM sites and one permanent radar station. There will also be a base with 5 mobile artillery guns, 3 mobile radar stations, 2 self-propelled anti-aircraft tanks, and emergency crews and transports.
--International Airports will call for jetways to be no less than 1 kilometer from the terminal. Passengers will disembark the plane where they will take a high-speed MagLev train to the terminal for luggage.
--Across the nation, a high-speed, Multi-tiered, 8-track Maglev system will be constructed. The bottom rails are reserved for military freight and personnel.
--Finally, Civilian Emergency Housing Centers will be created underground at undisclosed locations in the event of a major war.
