The Emperor broke out in tears as he stepped off the Azteca-SST Supersonic VIP airliner. For the first time since the 1300s, the Snake Tribe Aztecs have reclaimed their home territories.
The Holy Empire of the Aztec Lands annexed the United Mexican States in an agreement with Decisive Action when it decided to partition Earth DA. Dissent is rather low for an annexation, as the poor want a stronger, noncorrupt government. The middle classes are content with the Emperor's promise not to alter the American Enclave (as the new territories are being known)'s economic system. The upper class is reportedly fleeing to Texas.
Most of the right-wing remains, though those on the medium and far left such as Scandanavian Socialists and Communists are deeply fearful of the new government.
The Emperor also announced that the policy of religious tolerance would continue, which is good news for the landslide Roman Catholic majority. The border with Texas and Arizona is being closely occupied to keep people from leaving without authorization.
The annexation brings resonsibilities- first and foremost is to reconstruct the American Enclave's economy, which was oil based during the OPEC crises and collapsed and has remained in depression or recession since. Secondly, much economic development needs to be done in the mostly rural areas of the country. Thirdly, and most importantly, the Zapatista Socialist rebellion of Subcommandant Marcos in the south must be crushed, something which Mexico has generally failed to do. Corruption and crime, especially in the police force, which itself has been responsible for kidnappings, is to be snapped shut by executions for bribery.
The Empreor was led on a tour of Mexico City, which he has renamed "New Tenochtitlan" and promises to clean up- the pollution is horrible, the smog dense, and the groundwater undrinkable. He broke out in tears when he reached the site of where the Aztec pyramids once stood.
"It has been millenia since the Snakes have been able to see this sight. I am forever honored to stand here, in the presence of the glory that was- and is- the Aztecs." He referred to the circa-1350 Aztec Civil War, which forced the dissenting Snake Tribe to migrate to the current Aztec Lands.
Although the vast majority of the 60% European/Indian/30% Amerindian population has cheered, violence has broken out in the south, where Subcomamndant Marcos has reportedly started a new campaign, intending to slip agents into the tourist paradise of Cancun.
The other ethnic groups in the Lands- the Maya, Mixtecs, and Zapotecs- will have their homelands restored. Mexico's various states are to be enlargened and homelands distributed.
