Oil! Oil For Everyone! Oh, And Pirates [EarthII]

OOC: An idea for an RP has just come to me. Nothing much is happening at the moment on Earth II so I thought Id write this. Id be happy for any participation as long as your in Earth II. Dur.

IC:

It was a cold day in Northern Russia. The prospectors pickaxe dug into the cold ice. Chips flying away at every strike. The prospector was haggard, with a lined, drawn face. Flailed by snow and buffeted by wind he dug with a frenzy. He knew it was here. Keep digging. Keep digging. He had been a prospector for as many years that had passed since his father had died, a long time, and he had travelled the globe looking for Gold. Black Gold. He had found it before of course, he had a knack for it, whenever his left hand hurt he knew it was near, he also had a knack for losing any money he got, usually down the casino or down the bottom of a bottle. Not this time. This time he would make a find that would enrich him beyond the means that he could lose, he knew because there was a pain like fire in his left hand that shot right up to his shoulder blade and in to the very corners of his numbed body. His strength was seeping away, every second made him weaker until he felt he had the strength for only one more blow of his pickaxe, the blizzard had already enveloped him and his snowmobile would undoubtedly be frozen by now but it no longer mattered, he would be dead soon, he knew it, and even though he knew it he still raised the axe for one final blow. And suddenly, he was rich. The oil cascaded in a glorious torrent, first in a trickle, then an oozing, glutinous, sucking black slime, shortly a gush of oil turned his raggy clothes black and he fell backwaards, laughing. The cold and the snow no longer mattered, for he would be rich, rich as a bloody prince.

OCC: No-one steal this character, he's mine you hear me? All mine!!!! Seriously though if you do steal him you are worth less than a dog turd on a hobo's shoe.

Basically the premise for this RP is that vast quantities of oil have been discovered in Gintonpar controlled provinces of Russia. We are now exporting the oil to the rest of the world and back to other Gintonpar controlled territories. The catch is, our Navy, though the largest branch of our armed forces, cant be everywhere at once and so pirate attacks will take their toll. I will need 3 or 4 pirate chiefs and maybe an ally or two to help me secure the shipping lanes and pacify the seas around the area, which will become a nest of pirates.

Im open to suggestions and applications for the places on the RP. remember, Earth II only. Dur.

Are we allowed to play two roles, or have one role that doesn't have anything to do with our nation? I want to get on the pirate side, but I don't want that pirate to be affiliated with Rome in any way shape or form (in fact, I'm making it that the Romans are trying to catch the pirate themselves).
Gintonpar

Well how about Cotland and RomeW are allied with me for a slice of the money from the oil. But RomeW has a personal reason for hunting the pirates. A rogue admiral maybe?
Gintonpar
07-01-2005, 00:06
Then you can play both roles. Hell maybe even make a new account to play the pirates, dunno, just call it pirateromew or something?

Cotland you are confirmed as 1 ally ;) .

I would help, but it would take forever for the Djboutian navy to land in russia and our airforce would have to go through hostile lands.

I'll use my BitingReality account. That's the nation I use to "have some fun with" (but be forewarned there may be times when I use "RomeW" to post as both simply because I don't have time at that moment to logout and then login).

As for who my pirate is...I haven't thought about that yet. I had thought of him as merely the equivalent of an ex-Navy SEAL who's been attacking small-scale commercial shipping for years. He'd always wanted to "go big", building up his fleet for that purpose, and now's his chance. His name will be Jubilus.

North Germania, you scare me. You are too secretive, and it seems like you're plotting something, with Moronyicka's ship and all. Whatever.

On another note, I will play one of the pirates if needed. It will be a rouge organization, no way connected to Binthor.

No probs Cotland. RomeW you are confirmed as both an ally and using your other account as a pirate. Elephantum last time I checked you were quite far away. Maybe youi would want to be a pirate? As for Pushka there are already enough allies. Maybe you could be pirates? No connection to your nation or anything though, dont worry.

IC: Ministry of Energy, Cotlandstad

Minister of Energy Jess Trueheart sat in her office and saw the news. The main story was the oil find in Gintonpar, Cotlands northern neighbour and long-time ally. She had already ordered a estimate of how large the find was, and if it was larger then the Cottish oilfields in Perm.

Reporter: The oil found are said to be even larger then the oilfields in the Persian gulf or the Perm field in Cotland. This is a..

A knock on the door caught Truehearts attention. She turned the 42" flatscreen TV off, and turned to the man that entered. Shawn Hendricks was her advisor on the resources in Cotland, and now he came with the results of the find.

Hendricks: I had to call in a lot of favors in both MoD and Gintonpar to get this info. It's huge. Way larger then our own Perm field. Hell, it's even larger then the Persian gulf. They are most likely going to ship it out to the rest of the world. That means that they have to establish ports, raffineries, pipe-lines and what-not. They might need help getting it up and running.

Trueheart: That large? How... They've been real lucky. Yes, of course they are going to build ports and the rest. I'll have to call Thomas. Excuse me, will you?

She picked up the telephone and called to the Electorial Palace while Hendricks walked quietly out the door.

Letter to Gintonpar

Dear sir,

The friendship between Cotland and Gintonpar go back to the time when our military did battle and bled together against the Belarusians. We have established industries in each others nations, and trade is flourishing between us.

As you know, the oilfields in Perm have been supplying the Cottish nation for more then 90 years. As such, we have the technical expertise required for the continued operation of the field.

We have recently heard of your great oil find, and offer that technical expertise and know-how in order to retrieve the oil.

We look forward to hearing from you, and hope for a positive answer.

we can play pirates, i was talking about if the oil was to be shipped, say to africa, or South America (atlantic only) , we could send ships to protect, but evil is just as fun :) , aside from never being able to win.

I also had an idea involving oil, couldnt pull it off by myself though, maybe ill wait till times get tougher for my evil scheme

OOC: The find has been in my island to the North of my Russian possesions and in the seas around it. The island is called Severnaya Zemlya I believe. Nothing larger than a light destroyer will be involved, it would be stupid having aircraft carriers hunting pirates. Lets just say the waters are too treacherous for anything larger than a light destroyer. The pirates will mainly use light frigates, corvettes and patrol boats, again its stupid having pirates with aircraft carriers lol. As for the trade to the rest of the world, outside of the Russian waters, aircraft carriers will be permitted for the pirate hunters but the pirates in all theatres will be adept at evading pursuit and will not want to be drawn into conflict unneccesarily. Speed and surprise are their main weapons. They will also be attacking the oil rigs that have been set up on the island. Any other pirates willing to take part? So far RomeW's alter ego, Binthor and Elephantum are pirates, while my allies are RomeW and Cotland.

We can offer of our oil profits and discounts on the oil in exchange for aid in extracting and refining the oil, much of which we would be doing ourselves. We will mainly need your help in the extraction of the water in the rigs. There are 8 potential rig sites, we will permit you to build on one of them, of which you can have 95% of the profits. This is in addition to 5% of the rest of our oil profits. However the discount and eccess to the oil will doubtlessly be more of an incentive to you.

To be fair, the modern pirate wouldn't be the same thing you see in the movies...they'd have to be adept at a lot of things like rapelling and navagating, plus they'd have to be pretty covert (or come with effectively a large fleet of ships). These large ships are not easy to take.

Well, I thank you for the offer. I accept. If you could upload a picture where the loaction of the oil rigs are, I'd be most oblidged. The experts will arrive shortly.

Also, let this be a warning to all pirates. Any man, woman or child caught in the act or being suspected of piracy will be hung from the yardarm (well, actually a rope hung up in a cargo crane on the helideck). We are living by the old laws of the sea (pirate = summary execution).

Best of luck to y'all. I'm gonna assign 5 Virginia class subs, 30 Seeker class frigates, 5 Perry class frigates, 24 Skjold (http://www.knmskjold.org/) class patrol boats (the fastest warships in service in RL. Belong to the Royal Norwegian Navy. Average speed: 56 knots) and 2 Abyss class destroyers into the pirate hunt.

Not too good at maps but I'll see what I can do. Never really made a map before

The shipping routes will be over the Northern seas of Scandinavia and through the Baltic canal, granted free access to me by Baltic Karelia. After passing through there they will move through the Baltic and out into the Atlantic for the routes to the Americas and Africa. Several convoys will also be heading Eastwards to the Orient. Ambush opportunities will be abound.

Layarteb: Its up to you which pirate you persecute lol.

Elephantum: As I said I'll do my best with a map but have absolutely no experience with it whatsoever. You can make up your own fleet, just use your common sense. A pirate fleet shouldnt really be able to take on navies in pitched battle for example. As I stated earlier, no ships heavier than a light destroyer for the pirates. And DEFINETELY no aircraft carriers. Just a fleet that can slip away from their pursuers and which can savage unwary merchant ships. Basically just use your imagination, with a bit of common sense. Maybe a bit of rivalry with your other pirate leaders would also help spice things up?

RomeW: Im really envisaging pirate ships disguised as merchant ships, in distress maybe, then boarding the oil tankers. Their warships will be small and nimble, with plenty of missile decoys and chaff devices. Also possibly some nifty submarines? Not nuclear or anything, just enough to sneak in and land a raiding force on an oilrig?

All Pirates: Heres an idea, start with small flotillas (with the exception of RomeW's Jubilus character) and then as you get more succesful expand your fleet with your riches!

Your thoughts are all appreciated. Thanks a lot. Also no-one send a fleet in yet. The first move is the pirates. Once they start to commit their heinous acts of villainy and wenching, THEN send your fleets in.

IC: Cotland, your help is appreciated in the extraction and refining proccess of the oil. We do not anticipate any trouble in the area and the oil will soon be exported all over the World, especially to our Mexican possesions and to Gintonpar held Spain and Portugal, though we will trade with all nations and will start exports immediately. Hopefully there will be no trouble in the area as we so far only have a small fleet stationed there. Though there are plans for the construction of several naval bases.

NP with the fleet. I'll just have a few subs and frigates on regular patrol around Franz Josef and in international waters.

Tips to pirates: the Germans, during WW2, used converted merchant ships camoflaged as friendly cargo ships/passanger ships/etc. to lure the allied shipping into range before boarding/sinking them with concealed weaponry. I suggest using the same tactics. Also, anyone thinking about using Franz Josef islands as a secret base, bad idea. It's mine, and I converted it into a real fortress. There's no way you get in there without me knowing.

Sure! Now we only need 1 more pirate then I'll create another thread for the start of the RP.

So far:

Pirates: Binthor, Elephantum, Nerotika, RomeW's alter ego. I forget its name.

Pirate Hunters (though not active yet): Gintonpar, Cotland, Layarteb, RomeW.

As soon as I make the thread for the action, the pirates need to post their attacks on the shipping of the pirate hunter nations. Thus drawing them in to the conflict. I suggest that you all create a character and have a rivalry between you all. 1 more pirate needed to begin!!!!!

I'm thinking that it would be possible to hide your ships in the channels and islands of the Arctic as there will be many unexplored locations there. The pirates would generally sally out from places such as the Arctic Circle, or even as far away as the China Sea, live aboard ship when hunting for prizes and then sail back with their bounty after so long at sea to a base on an island or in a lawless territory. Who knows, maybe someone who wants a cut of the profits will harbour the pirates.... Now that would be interesting as it would also create tensions between the anti-pirate nations and the pirate harbouring nations. The anti-pirate nations would simply get a cut of the profits in exchange for safe harbour.

One or two icebreakers may be neccessary if you choose to operate from a hidden enclave in the Arctic Circle or around there. Its up to every pirate to choose where they operate from as eventually when the oil is exported further afield the piracy will spread around the globe. Sort of, a new dawn of piracy.

Ive replied to all your queries last page (thats if its gone to a different page yet  ) but I'm just going to create a new thread now for the piracy. Cant be bothered to wait for another pirate as we probably have enough already. First I'll post the first an attack by pirates on one of my oil tankers then the other pirates chip in with attacks on various shipping, and the other oil runners can post themselves chasing up the pirates, attacks on their own shipping and whatnot. As soon as I have written my first entry I'll post a link to THIS THREAD. This thread will be used for queries about the RP and I'm open to suggestions. Still open for one more pirate but its playable without one (just means you other pirates will have to step up your efforts :p ).

Hmmm... I'm thinking my main villain will be a multi-billionare, an esteemed man in Binthorian society. He will have numerous legal and illegal enterprises which he runs, including oil processing, precious-mineral mining, agriculture, industry, and commercial businesses, among the legal ones. Then there are the illegal deals, including piracy, illegal slaving, assassinations, and drug and weapons smuggling, to name a few. It is commonly known among high government officials that he is involved in all of these illegal businesses, but no one can really trace anything back to him, as his captured lackeys tend to die quickly in confinement, or commit suicide rather than being captured. The man's name is gonna be Adrian Mattix, and I'm planning to use him in the future, as well, so please don't kill him. I'm planning on there being two other main characters, that are actually part of the two fleets, both being admirals. Their name's are going to be Jerica Rolando and Gellert Norack. They are gonna be medium-sized, advanced fleets, funded by the enormous wealth of Adrian. It's gonna be pretty cool.

Go for it.

The Imperial Principality of Gintonpar thanks you for these forces you send. Small scale pirate attacks are increasing in number.

yikes, my evil pirate fleet looks pretty small, only operating with 4 at least i have reserve ships in Banjul, 9 backups, brought in as the conflict gets worse

also any pirates use Banjul and Gambia aas temporary bases, its pretty much lawless. Any other pirate safe havens
