A Tragedy Strikes the Plutonian Empire

The Plutonian Empire
04-01-2005, 13:24
**The broadcasting of comical events going on in the nation of Taldaan, had been going for just a few minutes, when it happened...**

*The quake started out just like most other quakes that occur in the least active region on the planet Denebia Hadea, ranging about 3 or 4 on the Richter scale. This time, however, was one of the few exceptional quakes.*

OOC: Denebia Hadea is one of the most tectonically active planets in the Galaxy, with quakes that have magnitudes of biblical proportions, frequently even greater than that. It orbits a RL star named Deneb, 3228 lightyears away.

IC:

*The President, as usual, paid little heed to the quake, at first. But when the shaking got worse and worse, then he got concerned.

*Suddenly, the ground jolted, and I mean, jolted! The place was shaking violently now as the President immediatly bolted for the door, remembering the earthquake safety lessons he read off of natural disaster books when he was a kid. When he got to the door, he turned around to face inward to his office, and looked out the window he had left open.

*Outside, he could see the destruction unfolding right before his very eyes. The trees were swaying wildly, and the buildings outside were starting to crumble, despite the strict quake-safety building codes. At one point the quaking was so bad the President feared the transparent aluminum biodome would collapse. When he looked just beyond the dome, he could see lava gushing out of the ground, fortunately a safe distance from the dome. Within a few minutes, the superquake subsided.

*When the quake subsided, the President went to the window to further look at the devastation. The lava geyser outside the dome calmed to a trickle. All around, smoke was rising from the debris. All the smoke and dust pushed the air-recyclers (called "oxygenators," by the locals) to their limit. Some even broke down, from all the stuff clogged in them.

*But none of the devastation compared to what he saw. His wife, Amy, who's also the First Lady and the Vice President of the Plutonian Empire, yelled to Gene.*

Amy: Are you all right, Gene?

President: I'm fin--LOOK OUT!!!!

Amy:  AAAHHH!!!!

<CCCRRRAAAASSSSHHHH!!!!!>

*A lone Roman-era column, put there by the architect "for humor," crumbled and fell on top of the First Lady.*

President: AMY!!
*Jumps out the window, and runs to her side*

*But alas, it was too late: she was dead. The First Lady, Vice President, and wife of who-knows-many years, was dead. THAT was the bigger tragedy of the Plutonian Empire.*

*A few minutes later, the quake was broadcast all over the Empire, a few signals being beamed to Earth-orbiting Plutonian satellites via microwormhole, for broadcast to the Sol system as well. The damage is expected to number in the billions, maybe even a trillion or two, of Plutos.*

OOC: Feel free to donate money for the reconstruction efforts. We already have someone on Earth, but he's currently at a peace conference in Nueve Italia. He can, however, pick up the money prior to leaving the Sol system. All nations, including modern-tech, are welcome to donate. But it does take a little over a day for our forces to travel 3228 lightyears.

2 or 3 on the Richter scale is weak. Try an 8 if you want wipe out a city.

As you have aided us in the past, we will send all the aid we can. Also, we are deeply sorry for the loss of your first lady.

The first shipment of aid will return to the Plutonian Empire with the delegate at our conference. Please specify what you require (money, food, water, supplies)
The Plutonian Empire
05-01-2005, 12:25
Most of our buildings are tall skyscrapers, so we expect the damage cost to be very high, likely to exceed $1 trillion USD, and our advanced technology can be expensive, so that makes it all the more likely to exceed 1 trillion.

The first thing that we will need right away are replacement oxygenators. For a city of about 200 million, it takes about 80 of them to keep the biodome breathable. 17 need to be replaced; the 15 other oxygenators damaged are repairable. So we will need a future tech nation to help supply the replacement machines.

OOC: Now that I think about it, 200 million is a bit large for a quakeless region on the one most tectonically active planets in the galaxy. Speaking of which, its high time for me to post a pic of the planet...

This is all I can think of right now. I'll post more when something more comes to mind.

EDIT:Radlett apologises for the loss of your first lady, and will send a suitable replacement soon
Official response: The President feels that he should wait at least a year before dating again. Most likely, however, he will probably feel like staying single, for fear of losing another love.

OOC: Just so you know, the demise ( *evil laughter* ) of the fictional wife was not influence by events in my outside life. I never even had a gf. Ever. But I did feel like it was silly to be running around with a fictional/imaginary wife.

**It has been five Earth days since the superquake, and things have been going slowly. According to seismologists, the quake registered 11.6 on the richter scale, the strongest ever recorded for this region of the planet. The death toll has risen to 120 million, over half the city's population, and is expected to top 130 million. Mass funerals were held all over the city. To make things worse, tensions were beginning to rise with another nation on Earth, and could escalate into war.

**The colonies on the moons were able to provide 8 extra oxygenators for the city. The computer technology that was to be delivered to another nation was fortunately on one of the lunar colonies at that time, as well as one of the Empire's military-grade PlutoCons. Immediately, the PlutoCon departed for Earth to deliver the computer technology.

**There was some good news, however. The people of the city of Denver, Colorado, formed an independent state, and has asked to be part of the Plutonian Empire. The President will soon officially incorporate Denver City into the Plutonian Empire. Denverans will be allowed to govern themselves as they wish.**

OOC: Hopefully I'm allowed to do this... ;)

OOC: In The Plutonian Empire's other thread ("Seeking Nuclear Allies) I formed an alliance and sent ships over. Two construction starships are on the surface, retrofitting and producing G-nullifiers to fit to the other ships, whilst the others have modified retroboosters allowing for limited hovering on Deneb Centauri. Note that 5 oxygenators have just been unloaded by the freighters.

IC:
The bundles of 4 were fired using a fifth, up to the waiting ships who promptly affixed them to the freighters, then the construction ships. They were to end with the communications cruiser, who had no current reason to land on the planet. As the freighters had their G-nullifier launch systems attached, they each descended to the planet to offload their precious cargo before returning to hyperspace. The construction vessels, on the other hand, with the G-nullifier launch systems, descended to the surface to aid in the reconstruction of the skyscrapers lost in the earthquakes.

~~SHORT RANGE TRANSMISSION BEGINS~~
This is Captain Samuel Werthington of the Victory

Our engineers believe that they can use the large-scale manufacturing units onboard the construction vessels to manufacture oxygenators, given the correct materials. Other than that, our ships are at your command. Should you need more raw materials we can order them from Upsilon Andromedae.

President: Acknowledged.

**With that, reconstruction sped up tremendously. The cargo was unloaded, and the ships returned to hyperspace. Plutonian engineers and architects gave the Hakurabi workers lessons on Plutonian architecture and building stlyles. Mainly, ALL skyscrapers were reserved for residents, with pockets of local retail scattered around the buildings, enabling the Empire to grow large populations in tight spaces. On average, skyscrapers were 2 miles high, but half a mile on Denebia Hadea due to tectonic activity.**

OOC: I'm assuming that all the formalities are finished by now, so I will increase the timerate.
Hakurabi
20-01-2005, 06:07
OOC: Yes, all the Cons. Starships are operational, and working at full speed, using the G-nullifiers to return to orbit and go around the sun a few times periodically, with communications occuring fairly regularly, but not RP'd. Go ahead and fast forward until the next major event. Or unless someone intercedes.
The Plutonian Empire
20-01-2005, 06:16
OOC: Yeah, but right now, timerate will stay as it is until one or 2 other alliances are finalized, and when Yushneko comes home with the 2 nukes.

While we do not have any machines capable of oxygen production at the magnitude necessary, we will instead ship raw, compressed oxygen to you. Thrity driller class frieghters have been launched with a total of 150000 tons of compressed oxygen. This is a temporary solution, but hopefully it will allow you to survive until more permanent solutions are put into practice. If you have need of food, or anything else, please name it, and we will provide what we can.

Our minds and spirits go out to you in this tragedy. May your loved ones find rest.

The Plutonian Empire is grateful for the new oxygen, since the air has been thin a bit since the quake. Thank you. :)
Hakurabi
20-01-2005, 08:59
OOC: I think it probably would be best to send more oxygen than that... If the estimate of 200 million people is correct, the oxygen will last one quarter of a day... At the most. To last a single day with everybody calm, it would take 3.8 Megatons, and if they were all exercising, it would take 57 Megatons. A year would take 2,081,925,000,000 Litres. But... that's assuming there is no air to begin with. Apparently there is some degree of air, but the two-fifths of a day worth of air won't make much difference. With that in mind, it is a VERY temporary solution. Fortunately, Deneb Centauri (now that I think of it, I believe you have accidentally replaced the numerical designation, not the system name, which makes you planet appear to be strangely named in the Centauri constellation) already has several purifiers and the problem appears to be large amounts of dust.

Actually, that gives me an idea... Why not ship in prefabricated temporary dwellings? You could seal them so the oxygenators would be more useful!

IC:
~~VERBAL COMMUNICATION~~
Cpt. Channing: I would like to see President Stauffer about a possible way to forestall dust inhalation-related deaths.
OOC: CYOA!
a) Secretary: Go right on in.
Cpt. Channing: Thank you.
President: Yes?
Cpt. Channing: Upon hearing of plans for Cyrian space to ship oxygen to here, three of our engineers approached me with this problem: with all this dust, people will DIE from dust inhalation. They proposed the construction of permanent airtight bunkers, for earthquakes and the cleanup afterwards.
President: And how?
Cpt. Channing: The oxygenators, honestly, would be a whole lot more efficient if they did not have to filter the entire atmosphere. Food will have to be shipped, as quite frankly, nothing will grow with the dust in the air, water will need to be filtered, as with air. The ability to focus these three primary needs is essential, as will filter masks when moving about outside.

b) Secretary: No, [reason]
Cpt. Channing: Then may I leave a message?
Secretary: Of course. (you could always say no and have Channing go off in a huff)
Cpt. Channing: (plan as typed out above condensed significantly)

EDIT: Last name for president filled in.

OOC: Actually, the biodome is kept at tropical temperatures, so tropical plants can grow, since, if I remember correctly, tropical plants produce the most oxygen. And there are plenty of trees. Until the quake, that is.
Hakurabi
20-01-2005, 09:31
OOC: Well I edited the post, and now that I've seen your post about the biodomes, I still feel that the smaller bunkers idea should be gone ahead with, seeing as there is still significant amounts of dust in the dome.
Hakurabi
20-01-2005, 09:36
OOC: I REALLY screwed up the calculations before. It's actually 29893500 tonnes for a year.
The Plutonian Empire
20-01-2005, 09:43
OOC: Aww, jeez! I completely forgot about the dust! Especially since we had half-mile-high skyscrapers! Right now, just off my head, I'm thinking of starting a new thread, where an aftershock puts even more dust into the air, and forces the evacuation of the city.... :hmm:
Hakurabi
20-01-2005, 10:02
OOC: Well since your President has already been informed of the dust situation, and presented with an option, I guess one option is to begin having the bunkers prefabricated and sent by freighters.

Oh yes... The aftershock. Didn't think of that. A bit like thinking a cyclone is over and trying to rebuild in the eye.

Actually, I'm Role Playing with myself as the president, so for your earlier post that you edited, the last name is Stauffer.
The Plutonian Empire
20-01-2005, 10:38
OOC: I think I'll go ahead with the aftershock thing. Sound good? Or do you have an idea we could use to save the city?
Hakurabi
20-01-2005, 10:39
OOC: With the aftershock, the only solution is to minimize damage. It's going to be a major thing... perhaps even breaking the biodome. The city will most definitely be lost, at least temporarily. For example, most of the city would be destroyed, and large amounts of oxygen lost due to leakage. Then everyone would move into anything with air available. Later on, the dome can be repaired and people can begin to rebuild. There's probably not much you can do to save the city as-is.
The Plutonian Empire
20-01-2005, 12:36
OOC: Agreed. I shall commence the aftershock and move the populace to the moons, where we'll stay for a while prior to moving to the second planet from Deneb, which has yet to be given a real name (it is currently Deneb II). That world has no moons.
The Plutonian Empire
20-01-2005, 12:52
OOC: Also, in the 1st post, I mentioned a lava geyser. I'm thinking of having it turn into a full blown volcano, turning the aftershock into a separate quake, so we'll have to evacuate. BUT, I will be merciful--i'll give us about 12 RL hours to evacuate.... *evil laughter* :D

IC:

**A few weeks after the arrival of the construction crew, the geological region began acting up again. This time, the empire was prepared, for they installed deep, subsurface seismometers, and a bunch of laser stuff all over the place, for advance warning purposes.**

President Eugene Stauffer: How long do you think it will be before the next quake, Vanessa?

Science Advisor Vanessa: Well, considering the suddeness of the December Quake, I honestly do not know.... But.... I do know that according to our predictions, the next quake may happen within the next twelve hours.

President:  Oh, shit!
*Presses on the intercom on his desk*

Plutonian Military Advisor Charlie [over the intercom]: Yes, Mr. President?

President: General, Vanessa just told me that we could have another major quake in the next twelve hours! I hereby authorize a silent evacuation of the City. Destination Hadea Alpha, our innermost moon.

Charlie: Yes, sir! I'll get right on it!

IC:
~~TRANSMISSION TO SHIPS~~
This is Captain Samuel Werthington

We have recieved word that an aftershock will impact within the next 12 hours. The city is being evacuated, and our large scale constructors could hold a lot of people. Jettison your materials and save as many oxygenators as possible. However, they are to be left behind in favour of people. I have called for food, water and oxygen supplies, and large amounts of raw materials for reconstruction. I have also called for empty transports and some emergency dwellings, but they will not arrive until after the quake.
~~TRANSMISSION ENDS~~

Small hatches on the sides of the construction vessels opened, and a sudden a rush of materials poured from them, as the ships emptied their cargo bays and sealed their main construction bay to accomodate as many people as possible. The Victory, normally hanging in orbit, was descending to the surface to bring as many people as possible into orbit. The ships touched down just outside the biodome (look, that WILL collapse) almost one after the other. Some of the construction vessels had oxygenators in their main construction bay, whilst others left theirs empty.

~~SURFACE TRANSMISSON~~
This is the Victory. We have our ships just outside the biodome, and can accept as many people as can be held on our ships. Repeat. We can accept as many people as can be held on our ships.
~~TRANSMISSION ENDS~~

OOC: Seeing as how the construction ships have been cleaned up completely, and all of their crew are working on routing power to air cycling, a LOT of people could be held in them. Same with the Comms ship, just not to the same extent, as it has no cargo bays or anything that could be sealed to make a cargo bay.

The quake shall now commence... *evil laughter* Mwahahahahaha!!!! :D

(ooc: Yeah, so with that calculation it would provide the entire population with air for 1.8 days. However, I figure people won't just be using my air. This is to help make sure they don't run out so quickly.)

The frieghters, having distributed about half of their supply when the evacuation was called, opened their hatches and began accepting citizens, helping with the evacuation effort. While this was going on, the diplomat in charge calledthe president to make sure this was alright.
"The city is evacuating. Would you like us to help out and start ferrying people off planet? We can also use our ships as temporary shelters wherever your planning on taking these people."

after this he sent a comm to Cyrian space requesting additional aid in food and construction materials. After that, he went to have a talk with his crew. They deserved to know that they might be required to do more than they had bargained for. A lot more.

As the last of the people scrambling for the cruiser boarded, the docking clamps lifted as the G-nullifiers activated, leaving the ship hovering for a second, before getting flung out into space.

OOC: How big are PlutoCons? I'll estimate around 2,000 people crammed into the Victory before it had to pull out. I'll estimate around 2 million people or so per Cons. Vessel (the things build bloody dreadnoughts, for crying out loud), and around 1.5 million per cons. vessel carrying an oxygenator (VERY VERY VITAL) as the construction bay is taken up by the oxygenator. 4 of the Cons. Vessels are carrying oxygenators. Anyone left behind when all the space-worthy craft have left is essentially doomed. The whole city is probably crashing down around them, and outside would be no better.

@Hakurabi
Actually, it's impossible to evacuate 50 million in 12 hours, so I'm gonna have a lot of them perish.

The Plutocon has a wingspan of 120 feet, and a length of 185 feet, the fuselage is about 6 or 12 feet wide (can't remember). So basically, they carry around 100 people per plutocon.

As I'm not going to be at the computer for the rest of today and part of tomorrow, feel free to RP the ships, their captains, and the freighters when they arrive.
