That's right. Join the Legion of Defense, and you'll receive a free cookie of your choice!
But seriously...
The Legion of Defense (LoD) was launched in January 1st, 2004 by Nanakaland. It was originally a protectorate service where Nanakaland and a few others would protect others. Soon, however, a problem arose. There were more Protectors than Protectorates. A Charter was then created to organize the alliance. It was later decided that the NationStates Protectorate Service (NSPS) would be renamed to the Legion of Defense (frequently misspelled as Legion of Defence in the early incarnation) and would not just protect Protectorates, but also Protectors.
The major difference between the two is that Protectors have more say and are more powerful than the Protectorates. They also have a responsiblity to defend LoD nations if they are attacked. Protectorates just voice their oppions, have some say, and are there to be defended without needing to supply military support to others. Protectorates normally have a weak or no military and a small population.
The Charter added some new ideas, such as the League of Saviors (LoS), which would provide humanitarian support. After the Last Anarchy Order, a major nation in the first LoD and early member of the Kingdom of the Midlands (TKotM) ceased to exist, the LoS never took off, but the agency still exists, waiting for a new nation to take over as head. The Last Anarchy Order actually introduced Nanakaland (founder and admin) to InvisionFree.
The original Council was really a group of different specialized positions in the LoD that did some votes and would be elected ocassionally. It did not work as well as only five council members were really active. Some flaws have been worked out in the new Legion of Defense.
With the end of its leader, Nanakaland, for the second time, the LoD collapsed into limbo to be reborn on a later date. The LoD Academy a great idea of training new nations into the RP and GP world as long as they join the LoD, never fully launched, but may come back at a later date. The old forums exist as a reference and may be modified later.
The new Legion of Defense was resurrected in early November 2004, shortly after leader Nanakaland returned. A new forum site was created and a nation called Witzgall (LoD forum admin) helped get it launched. The Council members are now set at nine and, unlike the early Legion, the Council members are not running as specialized positions, but as a Council member (with one Speaker to represent the alliance).
The Legion is back and ready for new members. For several days, the alliance was going to launch the forums as soon as 15 members joined (or re-joined). The 15 members joined and the forums were revealed to the public. The elections for Council are going to start (and an ammendment to the Charter is already being voted on). The ammendment process provided for in the days of the early LoD, but never used, is now going to be used to update the Legion. Our goal for the year (to be acheived by December 31, 2004) is 30 members. We go beyond political barriers in the name of the common defense.
