How Does Your Nation-State Reflect You?

Certainly, the way you roleplay your Nation-State must reflect some of your beliefs, right? I'm curious as to see how the goings-on in people's countries reflect their own ideals and values and such.

For example, Urukku is run primarily by the Urukkian Nationalist Lutheran Church - mostly because I'm a Lutheran, and I liked the idea of a theocratic republic based on Lutheran Christianity.

Wyrmsvaar - the FT nation I never use, has more to do with my science-fiction interests. Wyrmsvaar is sort of like the Matrix, with all humans encased in pods which supply power to the machines - but the machines are not dominant. Rather, the humans form a collective consciousness (Collective Psychomatrix) that drives the machines.

Why is your nation the way it is?
FCD
28-12-2004, 22:18
FCD was/is in real life a political organisation started by me and an handful of friends as a sort of joke. We have at this time around 50 members, and several more supporters.

The real-life FCD has to some degree the same views and opinions shown by the FCD in Nationstates, even though they are taken to their most extreme form in the role-playing. Basically, the idea of the Party and the Federation is a cross between the FCD of the real world, and the setting of a book idea I've worked on, following the leaders of a resistance in the fictive nation of Vinostravia.

Thus, the Federation is more or less what I imagine the nation of Vinostravia would have been like, had the FCD been leading the resistance and been successful. A handful of the characters I RP with are based on myself and my friends, the comrades of the real life FCD.
Taldaan

My nation is almost an exact parallel of my own beliefs. My nation is a Liberal Democratic Socialist state, I'm a liberal democratic socialist. Howver, there are differences. I don't like my nation's tax being as high as it is, and Taldaan is more aggresive than I am (although still fairly peaceful).
Malkyer

Malkyer is fairly parallel to my beliefs. On some issues like welfare and immigration it's a little farther to the left than I am personally, but on issues like economics and the military it's further to the right, so it's balanced. I've tried to create a decent government system different from the ones I'm familiar with. I think I've done a alright job.

well i've only owned my nation for about 2 weeks so it hasn't had time to fully shape itself, but so far it isn't reflecting what my beliefs are becasue some of the issues dont have the options i want to chose and the UN catagory says i am a 'psyucotic dicatorship' whereas i believe in a dictatorship but with some public freedom such as choosing local statesmen.
Red Tide2

Red Tide does not reflect my views. I just like to play the bad guy in games.
Crimmond

Crimmond is warmongering, Imperialistic, has started many warsagainst democracies, communists and socialists, uses religion as a motivator for war, was an enforcer of the GDODAD and is extremely xenophobic about other nations.

I am none of those things.

The only time it was like me inany repect was when it became one of the Planetary Utopia(one above First World) class nations and became a Libertarian Police State(extreme civil rights, with no political rights).

Beth Gellert
29-12-2004, 02:49
Beth Gellert has, finally, come relatively close to my own ideals. It has taken a while in development, in the proper fashion, from slave holding tribalists through imperial subjects to feudal merchantilists on through capitalist representative democracy, and a breif tangent into corrupt -almost fascist- state capitalism and the dictatorship of the people, to the current direct democracy and community of goods.

BG, as I play it, is according to what makes sense rather than to some fantasy of an ever-lasting ideal. I, like my Beddgelens, have no respect for the states that exist in suspension. The religious theocracies, the ever-lasting hereditary this or plebiscite that, statist the other and market the last. Politics and economy are evolutionary, and no one system is right forever. If I live to be eight hundred or some such, and NS is still going, BG will be [some political system] practicing [some economic system] that doesn't yet exist even in the imagination.

In short, BG is right, whether you -or I- like it or not.

I have played other states that have frick all to do with correctness, mind, and they've sometimes proved stupid, and sometimes fun.
Zarbia
29-12-2004, 02:55
While Zarbia is an extremely right-wing, fascist, imperialistic, and aggressive nation, in real life I'm the complete opposite.

I'm very left-wing in real life and I hate prejudice and capitalism. It's just fun to be evil.
Waylend
29-12-2004, 02:59
My first country represented me the most liberal democratic semi capitalist, but then I decided "I'm gonna be what I am not cause that's roleplaying." And so we have Waylend. But some things still represent me like how I'm all for rights and no cencorship.
Tomzilla
29-12-2004, 03:07
Well I am very anti-communist and anti-nazi so my country is the same way. Tomzilla basically incorporates what I believe into its workings.
Sarzonia
29-12-2004, 04:02
The way I RP Sarzonia very much reflects my political beliefs. My nation page says I'm Capitalizt because 1) I am making an effort to have a genuinely powerful economy and 2) I wanted to have some basis for the Portland Iron Works to be prosperous.

My joke is that I have two sets of corporation rules: Portland's rules and everyone else's. The way I play it, my government sees a clear benefit to allowing the PIW a lot of leeway that other companies of a less global nature do not have. Besides that, my nation's conferring of full benefits to same-sex couples is a direct reflection on my beliefs.

One way my nation does not reflect me is that in real life, people don't ignore me.

I'm being very bitter about that tonight for some reason.
The Emperor Fenix

My nation in part reflects my beliefs of what makes a great nation (See the paradise city of Okyto) in part what i believe makes an efficient nation (See the hive nation of the Crassussian Empire) and in part reflects the person i am.

I tend to think grand thoughts (Okyto City) and grand concepts (the Post-Humans and their essentially higher form of thought) but am also largely asexual (the sexual dysfunction of the Post-Humans) and yet manage also to be gay (the homosexual relationship of the Emperor/Reaper (the large number of wives and lovers he's managed to kill is something that worries me, i hope that doesnt reflect anything about myself :S)) and yet largely dislike being gay (the Emperor/Reapers murder of his lover and his subsequent 2 billion year sulk).

Though the nation was not built with a reflection of myself in mind it has ended up doing so quite well. As for its government, that perhaps reflects my somewhat, alternative, nature. In that is defies classification and yet has very left wing views.
Roycelandia
29-12-2004, 05:43
Roycelandia reflects me almost to a "T", I'd say. Imperialistic, somewhat quirky, and having spent far too much time reading "War Picture Library" and "Commando" as a kid, not mention watching far too much "Red Dwarf", "Blackadder", "Monty Python", "Fawlty Towers", "Futurama", "Family Guy", "Duckman"... you get the idea.

I'd also like to take this oppurtunity to say that His Imperial Majesty Emperor Royce I is almost exactly what I'd be like if I was allowed to run a quasi-British Empire as the Emperor. In fact, Royce I was originally going to be me, but I realised I'm not that egotistical (at the moment ;) ), so I decided to RP him as "Me if I was Emperor Of A Large Empire". :D

The best way to put it, I think, is that Roycelandia is the sort of Nation I would end up as Emperor of, albeit run in a fairly tongue-in-cheek, offbeat kind of way...

Cader Idris
29-12-2004, 17:33
I’m a newbie as far as Nation States is concerned and I’ve tried to run Cader Idris in parallel to my own beliefs – I’m very much a liberal in both real life and RP – but what I find so interesting about Nation States is that it’s a fairly organic process. The consequences of my actions are often unexpected, and take my state in directions that I might not necessarily have considered. That said, although Cader Idris might not be exactly as I had planned it to be in the beginning, I am enjoying watching the way that it is evolving. I think that it gives the game a level of realism that it might not otherwise have, and thats definitley a good thing as far as I'm concerned.

That's amazingly true :D, even though it ought to follow a set path it never seems to end up how you first thought it would.

My nation used to be a reflection or my RL beliefs, but I've let it drift away, because it makes for better RPs, it makes me more enemies. :D

As a newbie, I'm trying to use my political beliefs but I also try to keep a fine balance between politcal dogmas and political reality. Compromises are what it's all about.

Doomingsland is built the way I would run a country, but not nessesarily one I would want to live in. That, and because being evil is so much fun.
