Atticus stood in the hot sun. He wiped his brow with his sleeve and checked his watch. 3:00 PM. The hottest part of the day.

Atticus was standing on the steps of a large marble building. Large white pillars stood at the top, decorated with marble snakes weaving around them. Their eyes were highly polished emeralds. Over the entrance rose three stories of white marble and concrete. This was the Rulers House, a building that housed the Imperial Senate for the colony of Secruteus. Secruteus was a tropical island far out in the sea. But it had been conquered by Comatica back in the days of Marcellus II. With a steady population of 8 million, it was an easy colony to keep in order.

Atticus was given orders to be alert and stand guard at the Rulers House. Emperor Lucius himself was inside for a visit.

Atticus shifted his AK-107 from his left hand to his right. He pulled down the brim of his helmet lower. He seemed to hear yelling far off. The sound drew closer. Smoke rose from the beach. He craned his neck to see. He was then hit in the arm by a rock.

A crowd rounded the corner, bearing torches and picket signs. But mostly torches. They drew up to the steps and attempted to ascend them. Atticus stopped them. “You are not authorized to enter,” he said with a quaver in his voice. Three other guards stepped up next to him.

The crowd yelled. A protester called out, “We don’t want all this military stuff in Secruteus! Get these ships out!”

Atticus surveyed the beach. They had harbored over 100 ships on this tiny island, and sheltered 45,000 troops.

“Sir, we are at war,” Atticus said curtly. “We need this island to harbor our military supplies...”

“Shut the hell up!” The man cried. “We’ve heard it all! You’ve given us shit about keeping all these troops here, but we’ve had enough of it! We’re going in there to destroy this building and free this island from Comatica! It begins here!”

The crowd sprinted up the steps, trampling two of Atticus’s comrades. Atticus fled to the doorway and yelled, “Move back or we will fire on you!”

The crowd slowed, but then hurried again. Atticus shut the oak doors. The rioters threw rocks and torches through the windows, and eventually pried the doors open. As soon as they rushed in, Atticus and his comrade opened fire on the crowd. They did not stop until the crowd dispersed, which did not come easy. They did not fear the guns at first, but then more rioters were dead than alive.

Investigators think that there were about 450 people there on the steps. 263 Were dead, 116 were injured. The killings sent Secruteus spiraling into rebellion, and have fiercely demonstrated for an independent Secruteus and no war in Sumixia.

Riots have plagued Secrueus since the killings. The military has been forced to disband the outposts in the colony. They still refuse to give up, and continue to riot for their independence.
