Newcomer may give Liech trouble in '05 election
By "Tim Caronson," Staff Writer
Vance Phalaxt, the new Riverian Imperial Republican Party candidate for president, has gained massive support since he unofficially joined the race just a few days ago.
In Riveria's first presidential election, candidates Quatro Liech (Liberal Party) and the nation's founder, Andrés Rivero (Riverian National Party, also liberal) were considered the two serious candidates, although Liech had a substantial lead. However, in RiveriaFone's latest poll, Phalaxt had 27% of the sample's support, compared with Liech's 31% and Rivero's 12. Also in the race is the Consrervative Party, which had 2% of the support in the Riverian Chamber of Commerce's poll. The Conservative Party wasn't included in RiveriaFone's recent poll.
The reason for Phalaxt's suprisingly high support is his farfetched promises. He has promised environmental reform, higher school and police funding, and has proposed new laws to help the worse off citizens in urban Rivero City, the nation's capital (population 1.3 million). This all seems odd for a Conservative candidate, but it seems to be winning the highly liberal Riverian public over. If Phalaxt wins, will the nation remain an "inoffensive centrist democracy," or will it take a left turn, or worse, a right turn?
Riveria votes "for" UN resolution to fight AIDS
By "Hilary Gonzales," Staff Writer
The Republic of the Union of Riveria has voted for the latest UN resolution, which concerns AIDS and HIV. After much debate over one issue the resolution brings up, delegates decided that the one issue was not enough to outweigh the rest of the important issues, and made their final decision.
