OOC: I'm going to be adding more and more onto this as I go, but for now, I'll start off with a history. :)

A History of Doru Araeba

St. Alexander, with the Palace of the Rulers hovering above it. (http://www.zellfantasy.it/download/desktop/ffix/alexandria_wallpaper.jpg)

We have lost much since our exodus from the ground, those many years ago Dates, names, and countless technologies that once were probably second hand to us are now very foreign. Despite that, I shall tell you what I know of our history, foggy as it may be.

The tale starts two centuries ago, with a catastrophic war that decimated our people. What we do know is that our country was the figurehead of a massive empire, spanning billions of people. However, unhappiness became rampant (as, it seems, commonly happens in large empire), and a man, whose name has been lost to history, rose up and comforted the unhappy people, gave them joy, and a cause.

We also know that it was he that first opposed the attacks the over-zealous populous launched against the government. He wanted to solve thing peacefully. But it was too late. The people, now bravened with their initial victories, became braver. They took military installations, and launched even more deadly attacks upon their deemed enemy.

Our weapons then were far more powerful than anything now. They had no trouble eradicating the people's enemy, the government. But with the populous' haste to overthrow their rulers, they overlooked how deadly the weapons they used actually were. They rendered land uninhabitable, charred and gray, and a lingering sickness always hung in the air. Anyone who strayed into the area for too long died. A constant ash rained from the sky,as if the entire country was in the depths of the harshest winter.

Again the man rose up. He made them realize their mistake, but it was too late. Millions were already dead from the sickness. There was nowhere to go, everywhere the sickness seemed to linger. They could not run, for their neighbors, fearful that they would cause the same destruction again, forbid them from entering their lands.

And so they were damned within their own borders. They died slowly, the sickness seemingly exacting revenge for all the lives taken in the short-sighted rebellion. The man was in despair, for he could not find a way to save his people.

As he lay one night, looking up at the ash raining upon him, he realized that the key to life lay not on the ground, where they wasted away, but above the ash clouds, above the sickness, in the sky, the heavens. And so the exodus began.

The man, along with his closest followers, constructed massive flying machines, and together, they rose above the dark clouds and settled in the sky, where they patched their machines together and formed cities.

Though it saved our people, and our way of life, much was lost. Of the estimated billions, only three million remain in the cities, the vast majority of the survivors choosing not to go. Also lost was technology. In their hastiness to escape death, much that they couldn't take with them was lost forever.

And so through the years they progressed forward, making scientific leaps made by their great-grandfathers and beyond decades ago. They set up farms, and communities, and some began risking their lives to cruise beneath the cloudlines to quickly gather precious stones and other materials. They could not stay long enough to gather technologies, as in the years in the skies, they lost any of what little resistance they had to the sickness, and those that stayed died even quicker.

Those the went under the cloudline to gather items became known as “Cloud Divers”, a noble, but dangerous profession even today.

It was a sad day when the man, now called the savior, died. It seemed that everyone in the nation turned out for his death ceremony. He was given the ancient title of “Saint” (though no one was quite sure what it was, as the meaning had been lost long ago), and the name Alexander, a figure of luck from old lore. The capital was renamed to honor him, Saint Alexander.

In his place, the people put two people, a man and a women (whom had no affiliation in the past) in control. The two people were distinctly different, and acted as checks and balances to each other, leading to a fair and just rule. They both took the last name of Alexander, and the man took the title of “Guide”, while the woman took “Attendress”. The former named to guide the people in their life, while the other carefully observed their progress, and corrected their mistakes.

And it has been like that ever since.

[OOC: Lamen's terms, a revolution led to an internal nuclear war. The radiation, known to my people as the "sickness" was slowly killing off the survivors, and neighboring nations would not take them in, so they built flying machines and fled to the sky.]

Government in Doru Araeba

The government in Doru Araeba has a rather simplistic design. Despite that, it has served our people well for a long time. Two people, whom are always unrelated and have had no past affiliations are selected, one male, and one female, from the populous. The chosen are usually older, and have always made some sort of contribution, or discovery. The chosen rule until one, or both of them dies, then a new pair is selected. It is common for the pair to get married once they are selected, but it is not required. Both of them, however, drop their old surname and take on “Alexander” as their new one, with the appropriate generational numeral after it (ex. Alexander the Fifteenth).

The male always takes on the role of “Guide” (one of the two, and only ruling positions in the government). The guide takes control of domestic issues such as utilites, education, and other such responsibilites.

The female takes the role of “Attendress”. Often regarded as the more powerful of the two positions, control of the armed forces falls under her command, along with any other foreign issues and policies.

Once, at the beginning of every month, the two are required to meet and discuss the coming month, and the opinions of one other's policies. In reality, they share responsibilites of both domestic and foreign policies, acting as checks and balances. This makes for a fair system of government, and not one pair in its history are considered to have “failed” in their duties, or are regarded with anomosity.

This is cool. You seem to be a good RPer, which is something NationStates tends to lack in its newer nations. I like the story. Did you happen to have a previous nation that died/was deleted? Or did this story just sort of... appear.

OOC: No, I wrote this history about an hour ago, when a story idea popped into my head. Nationstates seemed an appropriate medium to post it in. Thanks for the compliement, btw.

OoC: Perhaps that might work. Everything in my nation is air-based, so. What might present a problem is the tech barrier: we're post WW1, nearing world war two tech, but we have come up to ingenious solutions to modern problems with supposedly "primitive" tech.
