The sky was bright with the golden clouds of dawn. The city of Ilrath, capital of the Theocracy of Demnia, lay in quite. Possibly some citizens were awakening to greet the new day, with morning prayers to ILZAR, whose religion is the only legal faith in Demnia; and whose clergy rule the nation.

Then, suddenly, a cannon was fired, shaking the city. Something was going to take place, of this all the jolted people knew, but what? All questions were soon to be answered.

The grand gates of the Holy Fortress of Draegle were opened then; tall black spires adorning the structure. The high ranking priests and cardinals of the ILZARIAN Inquesition stepped out, clothed in black and red velvet and adorned in the gems. Thousands of armed guards, dressed in stiff uniforms and carrying assault rifles stepped out to escort them, accompanied by the Elite Guard of the Jyhad, a small group of gifted Psionic body guards devoted to the religion.

The few awake faithful who had gatherd in the square cheered. Some of the guards then positioned themselves at the gates as the Inquesitors mounted a raised dais. Meanwhile, other guards began preparing a immense bonfire, of whose likes no one had ever before beheld. Thousands of bails of hay and kindling were piled.

Then, a hymn was sung, and as this happened, the light rose a little higher. Nearly a million people could be seen inside the Fortress compound, densely packed and threatened by guards brandishing weapons. Rags adorned their form, as they cried out in fear.

As the soldiers finished with the bonfire, the Cardinal High Inquesitor spoke:

"By order of His Holieness, Linus IV, Pontifex Maximus of ILZAR the one true god, leader of the land of Demnia, and sucessor to the Prophet, all heretics are to be executed, regardless of stage in torture. Because our Inquesitoral prisons are now overflowing with heretics, it has been decided that the Inquesition can no waist its time torturing heretics and getting them to recant. As a result, to clear the way for others, all heretics are to be executed forthwith. You have refuesed to give up heresy and recant, now you will be thrown into the flames of the Abyss for your crimes against ILZAR and your aligance to Thanatos, the evil one."

At his signal, the gates were again opened and the pyre was lit. It burst into high flames, just as a guard screamed "Move!" Reluctant, but without choice, the ragged, worn men and women walked forward in slow procession, to their deaths. The signal was given, and the first few heretics were hurled into the flames.

Their agonizing screams erupted soon after. Several prisoners turned and attempted to run, only to be dragged screaming to their deaths. A few were even shot, and then hurled into the fire.

By the end of the day, only the ashes were left of those who had dared to insult the only god, ILZAR with their heresy, and a step in the Jyhad against the wicked was initiated.

"Bad news for the Central Spires today," started a cool, composed news anchor sitting next to an equally confident looking young woman, his partner. The television cut to the image of a tired looking elderly man leaning heavily on his cane, surrounded by hundreds of native and foreign reporters demanding a statement. "There really isn't much to be said," he started, rubbing his eyes for a moment before continuing. "We found a few foreign operatives in our midst too late. All we can do is make sure this doesn't happen again."

The young, female anchor returned to the screen with a smile, whisking a loose strand of her red hair away from her face casually. "More than thirty percent of all of the operatives working for The Ethics Union have been taken into custody, and of this group, only half have been heard of in the past twenty-four hours, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs."

The television cut to footage of Ilrath, capital city of Demnia, the camera panning from shots of the capital building to the rest of the city. “Many of the agents had been sent to lessen the damage caused by radically religious regimes, such as the theocracy of Demnia. Approximately one million were recently burned alive, and because of the shortcoming of the Ministry of Intelligence, less than ten families were able to be saved from the prisons before the mass-execution, regardless of having well over seventy-five operatives in that field, as our analysts have guessed.”

The camera shifted somewhat dramatically back to the first anchor. "The undercover operatives had been doing their best to get dissidents safely out of nations who otherwise would have had them executed for their political or religious beliefs, but a few of those nations have presented evidence of sabotage and inciting revolution as well."

CHAIRMAN BORRIS YUKIVITSKI'S OFFICE - CENTRAL SPIRES

The young, recently elected Borris "Ethics" Yukivitski sat slumped in his plush seat at his end of the long table of government officials, flanked by aides. This was quite a first issue to deal with, as the media enjoyed reminding him. The unnerving silence was clearly getting to the other officials as they waited for him to say something after he slapped the television off and began massaging his scalp. After what seemed like a year passed, he sat up straight, scowling.

"Sir, the sooner you give us a plan, the better," whispered one of the aides, only to be dismissed with a nod.

"I don't care how this happened," Borris started, standing up and leaning on the table with his knuckles. "You all need to do better, starting now, but we can't afford to cry over spilled milk, at least not now anyway. Expect some sort of retribution from the capitalists, and do your best to get the peoples' confidence back. They want to believe in you guys, but right now, they feel like their great patriotism is, frankly, questionable."

From the other end of the table, the Minister of Internal Affairs stood up. "That's all good and well, Ethics, but it's a bit broad. Can you be a bit more specific with your plan?"

Borris could see where the minister was coming from, but he was still a bit disappointed to see the man struggle with the fact that they had to wait and see. He stood up straight and folded his hands together at the small of his back and smiled reassuringly. "They'll all respond differently, so we do have to keep an open mind. Try to be as peaceful as possible, and I advise you all watch your steps. I want five men watching every one person who comes in with the diplomats they'll surely be sending, secure extra funds for the anti-missile system, and make sure that the media knows that we've already detained the two traitors responsible for this, even if he hasn't been doing very much talking. Be sure to have their trials public.”

He paused and folded his arms now, shifting his weight. "The whole world is watching now, and we have to make sure we don't get thrown in with the stereotype of 'left-wing countries are all a bunch of spies.' At the same time, we can’t sit down and let this sort of thing keep going, not even for one second. As the officials left his spacey office, he began typing up condemnation of the genocide in Demnia, though he knew all the speechwriters and editors would probably already have stuff for him to pick from. Pausing to rub his forehead again, he leaned over to one of the aides and said smoothly, "Get me some vodka, please."

Although in this time period I am a fledgling nation between the Lunar Surface and Lunar and Earth Orbital Stations and Outpost - we currently have excellent optical intel gathering capability and firststrike highmach aerospace fighter/bombers and recon planes. We dont have an army around 2010 but can aid in surgical strikes, strategic bombings and air support. Thats what we're limited to in ModernTech since we would barely be scratching out our survival as an orbital and lunar surface colony until around 2020.

OOC:The only orbital assets I have are perfectly within the 2005-2020 area. I have communication, spy, scientific, ballistic missile detection, nuclear explosion detection, and anti ballistic missile satillites. The only kind of space-space weapons in modern tech are missiles based on satellites. Non of that rail-gun or laser stuff(although lasers are what are used on the ABMs). Also this airforce will be a pushover. At 36 million he cant have to many planes. He cant have state-of-the-art either. Also... the rule IS written... in several places. Whats more arrogant; refusing to roleplay based on the unwritten rules of roleplay, or demanding that one roleplay based on the unwritten rules of roleplay?

I think everyone else and myself all know the answer to this, so again, I call you this:

I find it interesting that many of you are suggesting that I should have let the heretics go. I find the idea heresy in and of itself. Besides, it is their own fault that they died, the fools should have recanted and took ILZAR as their god, for he is the only god in existance.

As I have said, the Inquesitions prisons were overflowing, and so a solution was established. It is as simple as that. The Pontifex Maximus is ILZAR's servant on earth, and he ordered that the will of ILZAR be fullfilled and the Jyhad carried out on the fools who refuesed to recant and repent of sin and heresy. It is the job of the Inquesition to lead the heretics into the flames, and send them to the firey pits of the Abyss.

We follow ILZAR, and it is unlikely that such an extermination of heretics of this size will ever occur again, for already many current infedels have recanted. The book of ILZAR and the Great Laws order us to destroy all unbelievers in holy war. As the prophet said: "My people, ILZAR has speaketh to me, and I say now, either convert the heretics, or deliver them into death; let only the flames purify their evil souls."

And as for those who have said that ILZAR should destroy the heretics themselves, it is heresy! The book of ILZAR clearly states that the great god would not waist his time with such things, but leaves them up to his children. The Inquisition itself takes on this burden.

Just today, a sacrifice has been made at the Great Temple of ILZAR in Ilrath. The people have gathered on the eighth day of the week to observe the Sabbot, and have been told of the sacred vision.

Do not underestimate the power of ILZAR. Our numbers may be small, but we have the holy forces of purity and truth behind us. When ILZAR speaks, all listen; as it says in the Book of ILZAR, once there was a foolish city of heretics that existed and lived in wickedness. ILZAR brought down his wrath upon them and destroyed the city in devine fire. Nothing to suggest that the heretics ever existed survives today. The taskforce arrived off the coast of Demnia, out of range of any artillery the Demnians might have. The M-Battleships(about 5 in all) each fired 24 Kudzu cruise missiles at defenses already picked out by spy sattelites. The big 18.6 inch guns of the G-Battleships began to bombard the coastal fortifications. They used guided deep penetration shells. H/K-1 Revnants took off from the Aircraft Carriers(120 in all) all of them loaded with 6 LRASMs(Long Range Anti-Surface Missile) each. Their targets were radar stations, SAM sites, airfields, and artillery guns..

OOC:Okay here is the math on the missiles, 5X24=120 missiles from the M-Battleships, as for the planes, 6X120=720 LRASMs launched by aircraft.

I dunno if GB is having a mental lapse but we had airships and huge ones since the mid 1900s in theory you could strap heavy gun turrets, and misslebanks to airships from the early 70s with a lil R&D funding and by the 1990s you could concievably use larger 3-body airships with a reinforced berylium alloyed deck over the top for airborne carriers. Its Moderntech but in an alternate timeline - a sort of what if scenario, that couldve happend if airships were not completely abandoned and it got the R&D and industrial interest it couldve from the 1930s on.

It just occured to me you could decrease the effect of local heat attenuation if the population was spread across several levels vertically - the City would create less of its own weather and be more evironmentally conscience, in theory.

At 5% of your population in uniform you will be hard pressed to keep your countries economy going. Also if you have 5% of your people in the military they generally will have worse technology then if you had say, 1.3 percent. Another thing is not everybody in the military is a frontline combat soldier. There are logistic and staff personnel to take into consideration, as well as the reservists.

The commander takes aim at a man inside a church, through the window, who appears to be preaching

He pulls the trigger. The priest slumps to the ground. Multiple shots ring out every few seconds. The snipers take out around 60 people, before retreating safely back into Chinlanikistan.

Nergal, who was standing there smoking a cigarette when Ilzar arrived, used the opportunity of Ilzar's speech to punch him in the face. While Ilzar was still in shock, Nergal grabbed him by the neck, punched him in the face six more times, and then tossed his unconcious body into a local black hole to spend a couple thousand years trying to get out of.

"Stupid newbies. They get a couple million and think they're the baddest in the universe," Nergal said before lighting another cigarette.

Then, Ilzar defeated, Nergal decided to return home to torment the DLE ships with their inability to make star maps and the occasional ion storm.

The very moment ILZAR fell into the void, Pontifex Linus felt his powerful connection cease in prayer. What had happened? Was it true, then? Had ILZAR been defeated?

Tears streeming down his face, Linus ran from his chambers in the Holy Pontificial Palace, crying out curses towards the world and its lies. Bursting out of the holy palace, he ran towards the city square. Thousands of heretics were burning there, he knew it, in one great bonfire.

And, abandoning all hope, he pulled out a gun and fired a few shots, then plunged into the flames, screaming: "Abandon yee all hope of happieness. ILZAR is dead! He is gone now, and all has fallen into darkness and woe." Then he was gone. The targets of his gunshots, the High Inquisitor and several other powerful cardinals lay dead on the overseeing dais.

All was gone.

While the two deities are having it out in a distant nebula, Dr. Edmund Freenbeen, Administrative Facilitator of The Armed Libertarian Republic of Infundibula secretly sends psy-ops liasons to meet with the coalition members offering to remotely pilot 'hijacked' airliners into key targets of religious signifigance in major Demnian cities.

Looks like a civil war is going to break out.

Cardinal Thaos, acting Pontifex Maximus of ILZAR sighed. He knew the truth, and the hundreds of rebelling citizens out there only spelled it out all to clearly. ILZAR was dead, and he knew it; in fact, the other thirty-some million people in the nation knew it just as well. In fact, ILZAR had probably never really existed to begin with. Perhaps the so-called ‘visions’ had been nothing but elaborate lies. But he MUST stay in control of his nation, he HAD to assert supremecy. And if religion had failed him, then by all things he was still assured of, perhaps something else, some other divine purity, would have to take ILZAR’s place.

Not that he really cared now. Hundreds of priests and acolytes had turned their back on ILZAR and his temples. Everywhere, former members of the Inquisition were being murdered, by either their own guards or their own ‘faithful.’ A new era was beginning, and many were now declaring that ILZAR had never existed at all, rather, he had been used as a tool to perpetuate the rule of the elite, his priests.

And who was leading this rebellion? This travesty that now stood outside the Holy Palace demanding the entire regime renounce power, and hand it over to the rebels? The Psionics of course. Those damned guards with psychic gifts, who had been the most fanatical of all. Yet now they raged with an unquenchable fire, demanding justice for the lies they had been told. Well, that was all good and well, but what would happen to him.

Footsteps echoed behind him. He turned; nothing to do but curse the fact that there were no longer enough guards, and then pray that it wasn’t an enemy. But to who?

A tall, dark man, dressed in a heavy fur cloak stood there. He carried a pistol, but he obviously didn’t need it. No, this was-dear god! Captain Antares, the leader of the Psionic Guard. “Hello, father of lies he said.”

“You!”

“You’re reign ends now. I will have justice for the lies of ‘Ilzar’ that I’ve been told. Now burn, in faux fires of the abyss you so love!”

Moments later, Thaos burst into flames, the victim of intense Pyrokenisis. And with him, the last Supreme Pontiff was dead. The Theocracy of Demnia had collapsed, and a new-secular-era was beginning. One were ILZAR would be none but a fairy tale.

Sends Greater Beijings Secretary of State, Dr. Andrew Wiggin to the capital of Demnia to strike up a dialouge and to offer international aid - potentially to be in the tens of billions to improve infrastructure, commerce and education in Demnia.
