Navy Department to become Cabinet-level

WOODSTOCK (ASP) -- The massive size of the Incorporated Sarzonian Navy has always allowed that branch of the Sarzonian military significant independence from the Department of Defense in the eyes of the government's military organizational structure. Now, it will stand alone as a cabinet position after Senior Vice President for Internal Affairs Nicole Lewis signed legislation to grant cabinet level status to the Navy.

"This is a positive step for the ISN," Lewis said in a speech given at her official residence on the outskirts of Woodstock. "Our navy has long been the pride and joy of Sarzonia and this just confirms what we have been doing unofficially for a long time."

The Navy department was granted a separate budget directly from Parliament while the rest of the Defense Department split money in the budget, accountants from the Navy Department said. In addition, the Navy's budget has often been more than double that of any other two branches of the military combined according to the most recent government budget audit obtained by the Associated Sarzonian Press.

"This will have very minimal impact on the Defense Department," Vice President for Defense John Newman said. "The Navy's been at the table in Cabinet meetings since before I was Navy Chief."

Navy Chief Kathy Bunhall will be sworn in as the first Vice President for Naval Operations by Vice President Newman and Senior Vice President Lewis with President Mike Sarzo still in River Rise, Sanctaphrax on holiday with First Partner Jay Tyler. Speaking for Sarzo, Tyler hailed the move.

"This allows the Navy to have the kind of flexibility it needs officially written into the laws governing our administration of Sarzonia," Tyler said. He added that Sarzo was "enthusiastic" about the move.

"It's about damn time," Sarzo was reported to have said.

The government of Lindim applauds this move and is glad another member of the OMP is granting the Navy a position of its own. In Lindim, the Navy has always been the military, overseeing both the Marines, as we have no Army, and the Airforce.

We believe this is an intelligent and sensible move. We did the same thing recently.
