Tragedy on the Krakyat express (First RP, Earth II)

OOC: This is part character RP.

IC:

Publicity was widespread. Even the Sultan himself had broken a bottle of Chinkian wine on the train as it left the station for its final voyage, although no-one was quite sure whether or not this was ceremonial or one of the Sultan's little quirks. The Krayat Express had been functioning for almost two decades now, taking passengers from all over the world deep into the Krakyat mountains. But now the train was old and the freezing temperatures of the mountains had taken their toll on the train. At last it was announced that a new train was to be made in a reluctant announcement by the Sultan, who had a stuanch dislike to spending money. As a venture to regain some of the lost money, the Sultan had decided to hold a "Last Voyage of the Krakyat Express", which collected widepread publicty. People flocked to Dund-Ur en masse from Tonga to Italy. The Sultan was practically beaming at all the income, and would have broken another bottle of wine over his secretary if his bodyguards hadn't stopped him.

-----------------------------

And now here it was. Ralan Kimdon, MP for Dund-Ur, was sitting on the faded padded seating as the train passed through the mountains. Although it was world famous, it wasn't as interesting as everyone said it was - the odd mountain peak there, the odd goat....of course it'll be great for sentimetal value, but for now he was just bored. He decided to make conversation with a young Jagonian child next to him, but all that prevailed from that was a cup of Coke spilt over him, a fair deal of saliva and an angry mother. Please.... he thought, Let something interesting happen...

Suddenly there was a crackle, and the intercom came on. "This is your driver speaking, we appear to have some trubulence up here. The train will rock a bit, but don't worry, this is nothing to worry about." Ralan smiled. Perhaps things weren't that boring.

However, outside the train, while winds of high velocity were whipping the snow off the mountains, a patch of ice lay ahead on the track. Already the wheels were fairly unstable, wobbling somewhat due to the rocking of the train. It rocketed over the patch of ice....

....there was an almighty crash. Ralan glanced out of the window, but no longer was there a serene view of calm mountains, but a blur of white, before he fell out of his seat onto the ceiling. It was like one of the Sultan's daydreams. Be careful what you wish for.... That was his last thought before he slipped into unconciousness.

The train, all 16 carriages, had pitched over the edge of the mountain-side into the snowy valley far below.

OOC: Could everyone just wait until I've posted the second post of this before starting. I'll post it at about 5 this afternoon. :)

"Hey, Meister!"

Ralan's eyes hurt. As he opened them, the first thing that came to him was a rush of pain from his left arm. He noticed some blood on his shirt. Damn.

"MEISTER!"

The carriage came into focus again. Rubbing his eyes wearily, he sat up and looked around for the voice. It was the Jagonian kid.

"Meister, are you feeling gud?"

"Yes, yes, never felt better." replied Ralan dryly.

The train was upside down, although some of the chairs had fallen onto the roof. The windows had frosted. Ralan approached the window and pushed at the latch. It had frozen. Damn. I'm stuck in here with a bunch of hysterical passengers and an annyoning Jagonian child with Coke on his shirt. That was when he noticed the fallen chair. It had cracked on impact, and the frame, made of soft metal, had broken easily. He picked up a broken shard and plunged it into the lock. It broke with a crack. Ralan opened the window and crawled out onto the snow.

It was not a hospitible landscape. The temperature was freezing. They were in a crevice, a few trees dotted around. On either side of them was bare cliff. There was no way any of them would be able to escape - and even if they could, it would be many day's trek in the freezing cold, with no real supplies. That wasn't any need for storm jackets in a heated train. Bugger.

Ralan crawled back into the train and fumbled for his coat. Finding his mobile phone, he smiled and turned it on. Yes! 1 bar of signal left. He punched in his house number hurriedly, his fingers numb with cold. The phone icon came on.

'Beeeeeep. Beeeeeeeep. Beeeeeeep. "Hello, Kimdon household, speaking?"'

"Jamda, it's me! Our train has crashed, alert officials.....do somet-"

The phone made a tingling sound. Oh, shit! A picture of an empty battery graced the screen for a moment, and then the phone went black.

The Krakyat express has de-railed! Please do something, please!

The Sultan read the message, and threw his wine bottle at Lamdan in shock.

"Good God!"

The was a crash and a splutter as a large amount of wine entered someone's left nostril at a high velocity.

"Sir.....please stop throwing things at me."

"I've really had enough of you today, Lamdan."

"But-"

"Just be quiet, dammit!"

OOC: OK, you can start now.

OOC: The Jagonian speech is written in English for ease.

IC: Jakobius Altän wiped the frost off his brow with his gloved hand. He was a member of the Jagonian "Näusskorps", which was the mountain division of troops in the Jagonian army, though they were also trained in survival and mountain rescue. He had been born and brought up in the "Näussland" province of Jagonia, which was a very mountainous area, so he had had good practice. This was his first proper assignment and he, along with the other 8 members of his platoon, had been sent to try to find the wreck of the Krakyat Express, and to bring back any survivors. The Jagonian government had sent this rescue force because of their political links with Chinkopodia and because of the large number of Jagonian citizens on the train.

Jakobius breathed in the refreshed mountain air, and watched his smoky breath when he breathed out again. Up in the mountains, there is very little noise. He was immersed in the tranquility for a second, but then the silence was broken by his squad leader.

"I think I see something down there," said Captain Ulass. "Come on!"

The squad paused to take a breath, then dashed into the night.

Makleev Kradal had issued a speech on the matter, and had raised a group of Krakyat Sherpayrs (Sherpars) to trek through the mountains in search of the Krakyat Express. They had been presented wit supplies at Olgiy and sent off on their journey. They had just trekked for a few hours when flashlights appeared over the nearest mountainside.

Bekot, the most experienced Sherpayr, ran towards the newcomers. Of course they were not survivors. No survivor would have made it this far so quickly. The two grous met.

"Ulass, these are not survivors!"

"Do you think I'm stupid, Jakobius?"

Bekot translated their Jagonian ponderously in his head, and replied in fractured Jagonian.

"We..is...aid also, shall we....to join....together?"

The man known as Jakobius smiled.

"Yes, certianly."

-----------------------

2 days later

Ralan was just about surviving. Although there hd been many injuries, the train was sturdy enough and there were few fatalities. But the train buffet could only last so long, and with nowhere to stock up, soon there would be nothing to eat. Ralan imagined being forced to lick the Coke off the young Jagoonian's shirt to survive. He shuddered. Please let the aid arrive quickly...

The two search parties came over the top of a small ridge. Below was a deep crevace. Jakobius gulped. The crevace brought back bad memories.

"Phew!! Wouldn't want to have to go down there!!" said Arannl Fälz, another member of the Jagonian Näusskorps.

"Thank you for volunteering, Grenadier Fälz." said Captain Ulass smoothly and sarcastically.

"But...I.." Fälz started to protest, but was cut off by the Captain.

"Get down there now or I'll have you court-martialed!!" he shouted.

Fälz hastily got kitted up, with the help of Jakobius, and then descended into the crevace.

OOC: You're going a bit quickly, you know. If this is the crevice the train is in...

IC:

he train creaked and tumbled off the dge of the cliff, downwards and downwards, spinning as it went, there was no visible ground below, just infinite white space. The Jagonian child looked up at Ralan, afraid - Ralan leapt towards the boy and started licking his shirt vigorously, trying to collect any excess liquid. The boy began to cry, then shout and growl....

Ralan woke with a start. The dream disturbed him somewhat, and the growling of the boy was still echoing in his ear, quite loudly in fact. Ralan stood up and glanced towards his watch. 12:15. It was jet black outside. That was funny, the darkness was almost blurry outside. Suddenly part of the darkness flung itself against the window, black fur pressing against the window. An bloodshot eye caught Ralan's glare. Oh my god, what was I told in Biology at school? Krakyat Wolf, dammit. Years ago. What did I learn about that? Agressive, bloodthirsty, deadly....what a great start. Well, I'm in the train and they're not. That made Ralan feel slightly better, but thumps in the night weren't helpful. There was another thump. The train rocked a bit, Ralan clutched a wall for support. The other people in his carriage were starting to stir. There was another thump, a muzzle nudged around the left window.

THE WINDOW LOCK! No chance trying to close it, they'd already be through. Others had noticed the wolves, and had ran towards the door to the next carriage. Acting on impulse, Ralan hurled a shard of the chair at a wolf coming through, and ran hard towards the door. The Jagonian child was still there, and a twinge of guilt hit him. Oh, damn my emotions....damn, damn, damn. Ralan grabbed the Jagonian child by the damp shirt and ran towards the carriage door. A wolf leapt through the now open window and bounded towards them - as he reached the door into the next carriage, there was a shot of pain in his leg - and there was the wolf, tearing and his shin. The child started to cry. It worked well enough, the wolf glanced up and Ralan brought his boots to the creature's throat. It reared back in pain, he sprinted trough the door and slammed it, hard.

I need to get out of here....

OOC: Don't worry, the train isn't here.

IC: Jakobius watched anxiously as his friend slowly lowered down into the crevace. Slowly, Fälz disappeared from view.

When Jakobius was a young boy, he enjoyed climbing the mountains with his father. They would try to get higher up each day, and had lots of fun. However, on one cold, frosty day a blizzard kicked up on the mountain and the young Jakobius got separated from his father. He had to take shelter in a crevace. He remained there for three days before the rescue parties found him. Since then, Jakoubius has had a fear of crevaces and blizzards.

Jakobius was brought back from his memory with a jolt. Fälz' voice had suddenly boomed up, having been echoed by the walls of the crevace.

"I've found something!" he cried.

-----

Almost everyone was in the front carriage now. There were.......stories about these wolves and nobody wanted to be part of one just yet. The front carriage was home to the whole first class, the driver's cabin and the buffet restaurant. Ralan picked up another few shards of metal from the floor and barred the doorway with them. All of the survivors were in here, among them many important figures - all now reduced to shivering and feeling very small indeed.

"OK," said Ralan, "any ideas how to get out?".

*Anselmo and Jack were watching the train whistle by in the faded afternoon light of the canyon, they would have to blow the thing up. That was that and all there was to it, there was no other way. The trains passengers would have no idea, and it broke Anselmo's heart to think of this, to think of the innocence aboard, and of the unsuspected grim future of their iron horse.

The engine made an eerie echo as it passed through the auburn branches of the leafless sycamore trees in stands at the side of the tracks, huffing its way through the countless piles of boulders at the edge of the train tracks.
It was moving quickly, so Anselmo and Jack were moving quickly too.*

After Fälz had called up, the Captain replied.

"What is it?" he shouted down.

"It's some scrap metal and bits of light machinery. I think it must have been blown down here in the wind. Well at least now we now the train is somewhere in these mountains!"

Jakobius and some others pulled Fälz back up. He took the harness off, and picked up his rifle. All the Näusskorps were armed, as there were many dangerous creatures in this area.

"Hmmm..." thought the Captain aloud. He licked his finger and held it up. He could feel the cold. "The wind is blowing from the north," he stated, "So that's the way we must go. Come on!"

The Captain and a few of the squad turned to go, but Fälz stayed seated.

"Sir, I need to recuperate. It's hard work going down a crevace, you kn-"

Captain Ulass cut him off again.

"Shut up and do as you're told Grenadier Fälz!!"

With that, Fälz grumpily got up and voyaged into the distance with the Captain and the rest of the squad.

Jakobius paused by the crevace for a second, and stared into the abyss, before rushing on with his comrades.

The Krakyat wolf slunk through the deserted carriages. Where had all the screaming beings gone? All of its 7 senses were alert, fine-tuned. Its ears picked up a crash. It yanked its head to one side, towards the nearest window. By night vision, it could clearly see the other wolves, waiting impatiently outside, and a glint of silver...What was it?

It bounded from the open window and immediately smelt raw meat. All of the wolves turned and follwed the smell, quickly. They couldn't resist. That was their downfall.

The buffet tray skidded erratically down the sloping crevice bottom. A hunk of uncooked steak had been strapped to the top by the thick material used to prop up serving-tables, and behind it trailed many black figures. It reached a very steep slope and careered down it, the wolves skidding through the snow behind it. Finally it collided with a rock, overturned and skidded to a halt.

The wolves caught up and started gorging themselves on the steak.

-----------

Ralan peered over the slope. It was very steep and there was excess snow. It might just work. He sprinted back to the train and found the foghorn. Then, with a lot of passion, he yanked to pulley. The foghorn blared out into the night.

-----------

The sound seemed to shake the whole landscape. Of course, that was a misconcpetion. It was the avalanche that followed which shook the land. The summit of the slope in the crevice, piled up with enough snow already, slid down the slope, gathering more snow. When the wolves realised, it was too late.

-----------

The survivors on the train gathered their belongings and departed the train. Food supplies had exhausted, and now it was only a matter of time. Then again, outside of the train, they would only survive for a couple of days. Where the hell is the aid? Regardless, it would be foolish to stay any longer. The train was left abandoned.
