Training Dispatch

Spartan Messinia
12-12-2004, 21:41
King Lysander Demetrios, the Spartan half of the Dual Monarchy, dictated the message as his secretary typed away at the computer.

Nations of the World,

We come to asking your help. The Dual Monarchy of Spartan Messinia has recently arisen from the unification of several city-states. We are a small nation, and have little in the way of military or economic weight. It light of recent global situations that have come to our attention, we can see that to survive as a sovereign nation, we must have a military to defend ourselves. It is because of this that I, as leader of the Spartan Defense Forces, ask any naton that is willing to send troops to train our army. Spartan Messinia is unable to pay large monetary contracts, though we will allow the construction of military bases and the opening of embassies from all participant nations, and alliances as well. Please respond as quickly as possible.

Gratefully,
Lysander Demetrios Aleksander Malthus
Sparta Messinia

When he finished, he turned to the secretary.

"Thank you, Grace. If you'll call Aleksander and tell him it's finished, he'll come to sign it." He took the paper from her and added his signature.

"Of course, Sire."

Within hours, copies of the message were sent to dozens of national leaders.

I will send a regiment of Royal Marines (3,000 soldiers) to train your men. Also, they can engage in wargames with the trainees later if you wish. If there is anything else you need, let us know. It is always a pleasure to help a fellow monarchy.

Upper Xen would be happy to send several SOG and CRF teams (about 200 men total) to train your men in counter-insurgency tactics and close-quarters battle, whether it be urban or jungle warfare.

We can also provide OICW rifles, F-16UXmk1 fighter jets with halfnium engines and advanced Tien'Long EMP missiles, and Casspir APCs.

If possible we can engage in wargames, and we are hosting wargames with our Mexican allies in the Yucatan region to test our counter-insurgency and security readiness skills.

Thank you, Malkyer.

Camp Dionysis, 3 miles outside Sparta City

The recruits of 1st Battalion, 1st Royal Spartan Infantry, waited in the camp for the Malkyerian soldiers to arrive. None of the men had battlefield experience. In fact, only the Commandant of the War College, General Sherwood, had any real military training. He'd been a mercenary years ago. Captain Locke, Battalion Commanding Officer, hoped these foreign soldiers were good. According to General Sherwood, the Spartan-Messinian army would have to specialize in light infantry for awhile, at least until the industrial capacity to produce military vehicles in large numbers came about. This will be fun...or Hell, Locke thought to himself as he waited for the foreigners.

Emperor Shadaum looked over the message one of his spies picked up off earth. "Send Colonel Veers and 20 men to train them in space combat and ground tactics, make sure they are the best men available." The aide went out of the door to relay the message to the holo tech.

The spy recieved the response and sent it on to Spartan Messinia.

Your Royal Emmenace,
I would be honored if you were to accept members of my elite paratrooper unit, the 241st Rifle Guards Division. They are famous for their exploits during our last civil war, which raged during the late 80s and 90s. Each of the men have at least 10 months of combat training and all have exprienced some of the most intense combat the region has ever seen. The officers have gone through 5 years of Officer Candidate Training at the Tremyonov Military base, and have great expirience leading and training troops. If you wish, we will also pledge military support in the event of hostile action against your sovreign nation. Please contact my offices with our response.

Protectorate Bureau of State Affairs

The Minister of State Affairs scowled. This could be a problem. Recognition of a new state could mean significant problems for Angelico if the territory is contested by a larger power. At the same time, recognition of such states could lead to important diplomatic relationships which could come in handy should Angelico herself be threatened.

"Is there any contest at the moment?"

"No, Minister, but it is yet early."

"Then we will wait to publicly recognize them, but in the mean time I'd like a dispatch sent privately to this King Lysander Demetrios. I'll draft it myself, and have the President sign it."

Diplomatic Courier-borne dispatch to Spartan Messinia:

His Royal Majesty King Lysander Demetrios Aleksander Malthus,

It is the honor of the Protectorate of Angelico to welcome Spartan Messinia into the international community. We too are new to international affairs, and share many of your concerns for the defense of our nation. Though we would desire to offer official recognition at this time, we must at this time suffice to offer this rather unofficial recognition until such a time as it can be determined that there is no contest to your claims of sovereignty.

With hopes of peace and prosperity for the Spartan Messinian people,

President Alexi Tatyanov

I can help by sending the Turetelian 97th Infantry Company (4,500 men) to help train your forces, and if you are attacked while they are there, they will help you out.

The last planes carrying the 42nd Marines Regiment were landing at the airfield, and the Humvee carrying Colonel Jacob Owensford bounced along the road to the Camp. This is not at all fair, he thought. His brother John, also a colonel, was commanding a regiment on one of Malkyer's interstellar colonies, and here he was training green recruits. Well, the Spartans of old were good soldiers. Maybe there's something of them in these fellows.

Owensford stood with Regimental Sergeant Major Roger Thomas, watching the Spartan-Messinian recruits parade.

"They look like good soldiers. Well, not good, but enthusiastic."

"They are that, Sergeant Major. Very enthusiastic. I look forward to speaking with their commander. What was his name again?"

"A Captain Locke, sir."

"Locke. A lot of good associated with that name."

I thank the nations of Upper Xen, Thrashia, Kelgrad, Angelico, and Turetel for their outpouring of support. I appreciate the aid you are giving my nation and I hope our nations will be allies in the future.

Camp Dionysis

Captain Locke saw the two Malkyerian officers watching the 1st Battalion form up, and he walked over to them. He saw that one was a colonel and saluted.

"Welcome, sir. I have to say that I appreciate this."
Malkyer

Owensford returned the salute. At least they knew how to do that.

"Sergeant Major."

"Sir!"

"Take 2nd Battalion and start going over basics with the Spartans. Report back when they're ready for weapons training."

"Sir." Thomas hurried off the Regimental Command Post.

Owensford turned to Locke and said, "Speaking of weapons, I was briefed that you guys don't have much in the way of heavy weapons. What's your basic armament?"
Spartan Messinia
13-12-2004, 02:48
"Our standard infantry is the New Aberdeen 7.62mm. It's a basic M-16, although modified to jam less and be more durable and dependable. We realize that our main strength is going to have to be infantry, at least for the time being. So, we've poured a lot of money into developing better light weapons for our troops."

Secret IC:
Taer, the Most Holy Emperor of Edrinople, carefully read the dispatch. Ah, a small nation with no military to speak of. Easy meat. Edrinople had been an isolationist power for too long. It was time to spread the Faith...Not through weak preaching, but the only way to truly convert the heathens...the sword. It was time to bring about the glorious changes the world needed.

"Harold," he said, "I want twenty-thousand men ready to invade Spartan Messinia on a moment's notice. Alert our allies. I expect them to contribute forces as well."

Too many times, I have seen young nations asking for military aid. I've done it myself. I have a solution. My idea is this: we start a young nations military coalition. Only nations created Nov. '04 or later may join. We offer eachother military training and aid at no cost. Simple and effective.

I'll get it started in the thread "Young Nations Allegiance"
Malkyer
13-12-2004, 22:41
OOC: there's already a League of Small Nations. I'll find the thread for you. I don't know if it's still active, though.

IC:
The training was going well. Owensford's officers and noncoms had the Spartan-Messinians pretty well drilled in basic manuvers and technique, but there was no substitue for actual combat experience. Their weapons weren't to shabby. He had Corporal Mendoza, a ninth-degree black belt of Kho'ba (a Malkyeri martial art similar to Tae Kwon Do), teaching their SAS in close combat. SAS stood for Special Air Service, and was used to designate any commando or covert ops unit that operation as advance scouts or far behind enemy lines. Actually, here SAS meant Spartan Air Service. Odd, he thought, leaving out half the country. He allowed himself a slight grin. They're shaping up nicely. If they don't get invaded, they'll do just fine.

"Colonel, you were asking why we call it the Spartan Air Service, correct?" Captain Locke asked as he walked up to him. "You see, it's fairly complicated. When Sparta and Messinia unified, Sparta was definitely the military power of the two. It's sort of tradition now that the Spartans are the soldiers and the Messinians are more peace-oriented. There's some good-natured rivalry, of course, but both groups know that neither can survive without the other, so there's no serious tension. I still don't understand it fully myself, my family's second-generation English immigrants."
Malkyer
14-12-2004, 21:18
Owensford nodded. "Thanks, that clears it up a lot. Also, I want to get your men, not just your SAS, trained in some form of close combat. With an army as small as yours, that sort of thing is important. Now, you're army's going to be huge percentage-wise if that bill of yours is passed, but it'll still be nothing to most of the nations of the world. If you're overrun, knowing how to use a bayonet and knife may not save you, but it'll buy you time to get away with materiel and men."
