OOC: For anybody in the know, this concept came from SimCity 2000 "Arcology."
-----Press Release-----
Hong Kong (AP)- Facing a severe shortage of space in many island-based urban areas, Home Secretary Charles Lau today announced the constuction of experimental self-contained communities, to be called "Secovilles."
The "Secoville," meaning Self Contained Ville, Lau explained, "is to be a large construct 300 stories tall, and 1,000 sq ft wide, meant to house 50,000 people in relative comfort. Inside, there will be hydroponics pods for the growing of food, and factory floors for the production of goods to be used inside the colony and out. Also, there will be office space, and extenisive living quarters with good ventilation and fire control systems.
Lau also says that the "Secovilles" will be very secure.
"The cities are also armored against NBC attack and have built in locally made Guardian LAMS laser systems to take down missiles and slow moving artillery shells, as well as Patriot Missiles to deal wth aircraft. In addition, each Secoville will have cameras and security forces to keep crime down inside the construct."
Answering questions about the stablility of the structure, Lau said "There is nothing to fear. We have run extensive labratory tests and field tests in the Xinjiang and Hokkaido regions of Upper Xen to test for the structures' ability to take all kinds of weather, wind conditions and gravity effects. The building has passed with flying colors, and all that remains is to see whether the people of Upper Xen will utilize these structures to their fullest extent."
The Hong Kong Secovilles will be built on a new, artificially made island, to be dubbed "New Kowloon Tong." The Tokyo Secovilles will be built inland.
Construction time is expected to take 2-5 years for all of the projects, and already, construction has begun on New Kowloon Tong 20 miles SW of Hong Kong Island. New Kowloon Tong is expected to be finished in 6-8 months.
