One of the first milestones in East Canada's rearmament program has been reached today. the CFS Stephen Harper has been commissioned at Halifax.
Nearly identitical to the Nimitz-class, the Stephen Harper-class, as it is being called, has been modified to perform well during extended missions in extreme cold. Its aircraft complement includes five squadrons of F-18F Super Hornets, as well as Canadair Tempests (navalised Eurofighter Typhoons)
Prime Minister Graves called the Harper's commissioning a triumph, calling it "East Canada's first step to becoming a naval power."
The Harper is the first of a class of fifteen new aircraft carriers budgeted for by the Ministry of National Defence.
