Press Room, Senate Building
Raleigh, Nascent
12/09/04 23:11

The sound of a vacuum filled the press room with its loud hum as a janitor made his way between the many chairs that were lined in several rows, each row two feet behind the row in front and each chair spaced four inches from the chairs on either side. The janitor was very careful not to disturb the chairs as he would most likely lose his job if he did. He made his way towards the front of the room and had to lift the vacuum onto the small stage area where a very beautiful cherry podium sat, the state seal engraved perfectly in the center of the front. The janitor continued sweeping, being careful not to hit the podium and scratch the finish. As he passed behind the podium, he noticed a blinking light from the corner of his eye. He turned the vacuum off and turned to see what the light was coming from. When he crouched down to look inside the podium, he found that the light was coming from a small metal box. The janitor began to reach for the box, but stopped when a security guard walked into the room.

“What are you doing,” the guard asked as he made his way towards the janitor, his left hand resting on his taser gun.

The janitor stood up slowly and motioned for the guard to look behind the podium. Not sure what to do, the guard slowly made his way to the janitor his hand still resting on his taser. When he got behind the podium the janitor pointed to where the metal box was as he backed up to allow the guard room to look inside the podium. The guard slowly crouched to see what the janitor was pointing at, seeing the strange box with the blinking light on it. He stared at the box for several seconds before realizing what it was. He quickly grabbed his radio and brought it to his mouth, yelling, “There’s a fucking bomb in the press room.”

About an hour later the entire Senate building was surrounded by federal agents with the local police and militia maintaining a buffer zone to keep the press and on lookers from interfering. The sky above the Senate building was completely filled with helicopters from the state militia, and the National Security Agency, their spot lights trained on the ground, making the area around the building look as if it were day, instead of night. Every once in a while the sound of a jet engine could be heard as they maintained a no fly zone over the entire city.

Inside the building there were only three men, from the NSA’s Explosive Device Squad. Each man was outfitted in a suit made to take the impact of an explosion and distribute it throughout the suit and to stop shrapnel from the blast. Lieutenant Isaac Underwood had been with the EDS for almost ten years and was the highest ranking man inside the building. Orland Johnson and Peter Swanson had applied for the EDS the year before, Orland Johnson coming from the local police force, and Peter Swanson coming from within the NSA. Neither had any experience in handling explosives outside of the training exercises they had been went through during their training. This would be the first time either of them had ever seen a live bomb.

Due to Johnson’s and Swanson’s inexperience, Lieutenant Underwood decided it would be best if they stayed behind the protective barrier they had set up earlier in the night. Lieutenant Underwood grabbed the joystick that controlled one of the NSA’s prototype bomb disposal units. Using radio waves to communicate with the robot, Underwood pushed the joystick forward slightly, making the robot inch its way towards the podium from the back stage entrance to the stage. Lieutenant Underwood was sweating in his bomb suit, but remained calm, even taking the time to tell Johnson and Swanson what he was doing, and making small talk. Once the robot was positioned directly behind the podium, Lieutenant Underwood pushed another stick on the controller and moved the arm of the robot up towards the box, that was by now, blinking very quickly. Suddenly the light stopped blinking, but was instead making a slight whining sound. Perplexed Lieutenant Underwood set the controller down, and walked outside the building to find out what was happening with the bomb.

Once Lieutenant Underwood was outside, Swanson took the controller and began moving the robot’s arm towards the bomb. Seeing this Johnson grabbed his shoulder making his hand jerk down against the stick, bringing the robot’s arm violently down against the box. Outside Lieutenant Underwood was consulting another bomb expert when suddenly a large explosion tore out of the side of the building, sending debris and flames into the air.

since no one wanted to be the mother nation, I will not be using any names in this rp.

All over the city the high pitched wails of the emergency vehicles broke the silence that had settled in the city that night. It had started snowing earlier in the night and there was a light dusting of snow that covered the ground. At the Senate building firefighters were still fighting with the fire that had come with the explosion. Ashes from the flames mixed in with the falling snow, making it seem as if it were snowing much harder than it actually was. Inside the Senate building the only men inside were both dead from the fire that had engulfed the entire west wing of the newly built building.

Across the city, a meeting between Prime Minister Clark McDonald and the head of the NSA, Jeremy Potter, had begun in the office of the Prime Minister’s mansion.

“Have you figured out who is responsible for the bomb yet?” Prime Minister McDonald asked as he sipped a cup of freshly brewed coffee.

“Well, not yet sir. However, we believe it is the work of an organization that is bent on returning Nascent back to the mother country. However, we cannot be totally sure of this yet, as we will need to go into the Senate building to look for evidence,” Potter replied.

Prime Minister McDonald turned his chair to face the large window that sat in the middle of the wall and was nearly as tall as the room. Sighing, he stood up and walked towards a locked cabinet. He slowly reached into his pocket and pulled a single key. He pushed the key into the lock and unlocked it. He opened the doors and pulled out a large bottle of whiskey and a small glass. He looked at Potter and reached back into the cabinet and pulled out another glass. He sat the two glasses on the top of his desk and unscrewed the lid to the whiskey. “Have a drink with me Jeremy,” he said while pouring each glass till it was half full. Jeremy only nodded his head and grabbed the glass, waiting for Prime Minister McDonald to take his. The two men looked at each other and quickly downed the whiskey. Suddenly, both Potter and Prime Minister McDonald began shaking violently, and throwing up blood. Potter looked at the Prime Minister, his bloodshot eyes wide as a deer’s, watching as the leader of a nation died. Five minutes later, both men were in an eternal sleep, covered in their own vomit and blood, waiting for someone to find them.

Almost an hour later, the silence inside the Prime Minister’s mansion was broken by the shrill screams of the, now dead, Prime Minister’s wife, Janet McDonald. Hearing her screams, two guards rushed to her side to see for themselves what had made her scream. When they entered the room the stench of vomit and death was already filling the room, making it hard for the guards to stay without vomiting themselves. After staring at the deadly scene for a minute one of the guards grabbed his radio and began reporting on the situation while the other escorted Mrs. McDonald from the room.

An emergency meeting of the Senate was called nearly four hours after the Prime Minister and the head of the NSA were found dead, in the provincial senate chambers. As the room began to fill with voices of over two hundred men, the head of the Senate, Jack George appeared behind the large oak podium that stood solitarily in the front of the room.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Senator George began, “as you all know the new senate building was bombed early this morning. However, I have received word that the loss of our building was only the beginning. At four o’clock this morning, the bodies of Prime Minister McDonald and the head of the NSA Jeremy Potter were found dead by way of poison.” Senator George stopped for a moment, allowing the murmurs of the other senators to die down before continuing. “The NSA has also received an audio recording from a man calling himself Caine, claiming that his organization, Citizens Against Separation or CAS for short, is responsible for both incidents. As we speak, members of the NSA are screening everyone that has access to the Senate building, and the Prime Minister’s mansion. Senators are not excused from the search, and each and every one of us will be asked to take a polygraph test, and our residences will be subject to search.” Senator George stopped again, the shouts of the other senators clearly audible to him. He waited for the room to quiet before proceeding. “I realize that some of you are not very receptive to the procedures taking place, but it is my duty to warn you all, that failure to comply with the NSA will result in you and your families being incarcerated until you are found to not have any connections with CAS.”

Again Senator George stopped while the murmurs of the other senators became audible again. However, he did not wait for quiet before he began again. “The next order of business is choosing an interim Prime Minister until we can hold elections. While drafting the Articles of Freedom, the drafters did not bother to include several important features, the succession being one of them. Now, you all elected me to become the Head of the Senate, so if there are no objections, I shall become the interim Prime Minister.”

Shouts of agreement and applause flooded the chambers. Senator George halted for a moment and allowed the interruptions pass before he began to speak once more. “Well, although your applause and shouting makes it clear to me that the majority of you are for me becoming interim Prime Minister, I feel that it is necessary to vote on the issue. Taped under each of your seats, there is a card with the issue typed on it, and the words 'For,' and 'Against,' written beneath that. To place your vote simply circle whatever option you are for and hand them to the attendants standing at each exit on your way out. I realize that this is very old fashioned, but there is not enough electronic voting machines for everyone so we must use this. That will be all for today, and we will reconvene once the votes have been counted.”

As Senator George stepped from the podium the room was filled with the sounds of feet and voices as each senator circled his choice and handed it to an attendant at the doors.

“Good evening ladies and gentlemen of Nascent, I am Holly Hollings here with a special report. Three days ago, a large explosion rocked the senate building, killing two janitors working inside, and early the next morning, both the late Prime Minister Clark McDonald and head of the NSA Jeremy Potter were found dead in the Prime Minister’s mansion. Earlier this evening, the government issued the following statement to every major news station in Nascent concerning the causes of both incidents. It reads:

‘Three days ago, a large explosion and the ensuing fire destroyed a large part of the west wing of the newly built senate building. After careful consideration, the agents of the National Security Agency have come to the conclusion that the cause of the explosion was a gas leak in one of the press rooms, and a spark caused by a vacuum cleaner that was being used by a janitor in the room.

In a separate incident early the next morning, both the late Prime Minister Clark McDonald, and the head of the National Security Agency, Jeremy Potter were found deceased in the Prime Minister’s mansion. Again, after careful study of the evidence we found, we have concluded that the Prime Minister was poisoned by Potter, who then took his own life by drinking the same poison. No motive has been found in this case, nor may one ever be found.’

“In other news, the Senate, in an overwhelming majority, passed a resolution that would make the current Senate chief, Senator Jack George, the interim Prime Minister of Nascent. Senator George will be sworn in at noon tomorrow in front of the Raleigh parliament building.

In related news, Senator Richard Marshall was elected to hold the position of the head of the senate.

When we come back we will take a look at one dog’s harrowing experience as he rescues a young boy from mountain lion. You are watching the most trusted source of news in the country, the Nascent News Network.”

OOC: This is supposed to be an audio message from interim PM Jack George to the leader(s) of your country.

IC: “To the leaders of those nations wanting to rid the world of terrorism, on the behalf of the people of Nascent, we ask you to assist us in our attempt to rid our nation of terrorism. We are not asking for a large military presence by your armies, but instead ask for help in turning our provincial militias into one strong army.”

OOC: Ok, what I need is one or two well developed nations that can role play to basically do what the US did in Vietnam. Sending troops to train the national troops, and send some weaponry to use.

I'll help ya, but instead of just training you, I'll rid the terrorists for you. Sound good? I'll check back for the answer later, but I got a report my boss needs done. See ya in a few. By the way, my pop: 500 mil. Economy: frightening. Good enough?

Ok, sounds good. Do you have aim or msn so that we can brainstorm on how it goes on from here?

13-12-2004, 22:57
nope, here, my govt. will catch wind of this (strongly anti-terrorist), and we'll send in a moderate amount of force, just enough for you to break a sweat. You control terrorist forces who have taken control of your military, and we can duke it out army to army. Sound good?

13-12-2004, 23:00
I was thinking more of a: You send in a small force to help train, but the terrorists attack your troops, thus making you send more and more over time until you have a sizeable amount of troops in country. Kinda like Vietnam.

sounds better. I'll come back later, and RP my forces coming there. You'll keep attacking, and I'll keep losing in gruiella warfare until I have an overwhelming force there. see ya later then.

Ok, sounds good. Of course, there will be the small 5,000 man army made up by uniting all of the militias that will aid you. We have no airforce, and a weak navy made up of mostly corvettes and cutters.
