Press Room, Senate Building

The sound of a vacuum filled the press room with its loud hum as a janitor made his way between the many chairs that were lined in several rows, each row two feet behind the row in front and each chair spaced four inches from the chairs on either side. The janitor was very careful not to disturb the chairs as he would most likely lose his job if he did. He made his way towards the front of the room and had to lift the vacuum onto the small stage area where a very beautiful cherry podium sat, the state seal engraved perfectly in the center of the front. The janitor continued sweeping, being careful not to hit the podium and scratch the finish. As he passed behind the podium, he noticed a blinking light from the corner of his eye. He turned the vacuum off and turned to see what the light was coming from. When he crouched down to look inside the podium, he found that the light was coming from a small metal box. The janitor began to reach for the box, but stopped when a security guard walked into the room.
“What are you doing,” the guard asked as he made his way towards the janitor, his left hand resting on his taser gun.
The janitor stood up slowly and motioned for the guard to look behind the podium. Not sure what to do, the guard slowly made his way to the janitor his hand still resting on his taser. When he got behind the podium the janitor pointed to where the metal box was as he backed up to allow the guard room to look inside the podium. The guard slowly crouched to see what the janitor was pointing at, seeing the strange box with the blinking light on it. He stared at the box for several seconds before realizing what it was. He quickly grabbed his radio and brought it to his mouth, yelling, “There’s a fucking bomb in the press room.”
About an hour later the entire Senate building was surrounded by federal agents with the local police and militia maintaining a buffer zone to keep the press and on lookers from interfering. The sky above the Senate building was completely filled with helicopters from the state militia, and the National Security Agency, their spot lights trained on the ground, making the area around the building look as if it were day, instead of night. Every once in a while the sound of a jet engine could be heard as they maintained a no fly zone over the entire city.
Inside the building there were only three men, from the NSA’s Explosive Device Squad. Each man was outfitted in a suit made to take the impact of an explosion and distribute it throughout the suit and to stop shrapnel from the blast. Lieutenant Isaac Underwood had been with the EDS for almost ten years and was the highest ranking man inside the building. Orland Johnson and Peter Swanson had applied for the EDS the year before, Orland Johnson coming from the local police force, and Peter Swanson coming from within the NSA. Neither had any experience in handling explosives outside of the training exercises they had been went through during their training. This would be the first time either of them had ever seen a live bomb.
Due to Johnson’s and Swanson’s inexperience, Lieutenant Underwood decided it would be best if they stayed behind the protective barrier they had set up earlier in the night. Lieutenant Underwood grabbed the joystick that controlled one of the NSA’s prototype bomb disposal units. Using radio waves to communicate with the robot, Underwood pushed the joystick forward slightly, making the robot inch its way towards the podium from the back stage entrance to the stage. Lieutenant Underwood was sweating in his bomb suit, but remained calm, even taking the time to tell Johnson and Swanson what he was doing, and making small talk. Once the robot was positioned directly behind the podium, Lieutenant Underwood pushed another stick on the controller and moved the arm of the robot up towards the box, that was by now, blinking very quickly. Suddenly the light stopped blinking, but was instead making a slight whining sound. Perplexed Lieutenant Underwood set the controller down, and walked outside the building to find out what was happening with the bomb.
Once Lieutenant Underwood was outside, Swanson took the controller and began moving the robot’s arm towards the bomb. Seeing this Johnson grabbed his shoulder making his hand jerk down against the stick, bringing the robot’s arm violently down against the box. Outside Lieutenant Underwood was consulting another bomb expert when suddenly a large explosion tore out of the side of the building, sending debris and flames into the air.
