The ATV leaped off sand dunes, churning its way east over the Mexican desert. Its two occupants did their best not to be thrown off: one gripping the handlebar and the other gripping the first's waist. Suddenly the drive braked hard, sending the recce vehicle into a half-spin. His passenger, losing his grip, flew out onto the face of a dune. "Bastard," he coughed. "Why you do that?"

"Had to get you off before you pissed your pants. Get up to the top of that dune, its as good as any." Grumbling, the second man obeyed, scrambling up the hill to crouch looking over the lip. Pulling up a pair of binoculars, miracuously undamged in his tumble, he scanned the horizon. "I don't see anything Cesear. No Colodians, Romans, not even a damn pig." His companion noddded, turning on his radio set as he did so.

Half an hour later the first lorry rumbled east from the Tijuana Arms Depot, signaling the start of the first Southern Californian Republic offensive. Critics were quick to point out that SCR's sworn enemy, Colodia, wasn't on the receiving end of said offensive but who cares about critics. The column of troops, equipped mainly with hardware looted from the defunct Mexican army depots in Baja, rolled eastwards into Sonora and entering the capital of Hermosillo within a week. Sonora, with only a poorly motivated police force to defend itself, begrudgingly joined the Republic.

His eastern flank secure, President Mackan ordered the column to head north into southern Arizona, where negotiations between SCR and the various militias had been going on for weeks. These groups, coposed mostly of former police officers and well-armed citizens, had arisen after the collapse of the United States and were the closest thing to government the state possessed. Although some issues about sharing government "with the damn beanos" had to be worked out, southern Arizona was annexed into SCR with minimal casualties for both sides.
