-insert low whistle- Jsut wondering though. Any information on when it'll be done and such? How many people it can hold and where it will be built?

In Larry Niven's 1970 novel Ringworld... Ringworld is a 1,600,000-wide strip encircling a Sun-like star at distance about the same as the Earth-Sun distance. This strip is rotating about the star fast enough to simulate Earth-like gravity and has 1,600-km high walls at the edge. Thus the star-faced side of the strip is a habitable surface about 302,000,000 times the surface area of the Earth.
We have had to scale that down quite alot in order to even come close to
something that is viable. Because of the huge scale we have decided to
build anti-matter powered " suns " about the size of the first Death Star, then build a Ring World around it. The first one is going to be built in the Nelchizedeke Cluster of the Andromeda Galaxy. In reference to the amount of
time it will take to build it .... we are estimating 120 ( NS ) years, or about
4 ( RL ) months.

We are now going to cross engineer this technology with Capital Ship
( Starship Technology ) in order to design a ... WORLDSHIP!

Damn, you beat me to the 'I AM BU1LD M3GASTRUCTURE' thread. At least I wasn't intending to build a ringworld, anyway. Dyson Sphere, all the way :D

Nice going. The galaxy needs more megastructures.

May I ask why? Nobody has a nation that's even remotely large enough to fill one...

As for the articifial suns, why not just tilt the thing on its axis, give it a wobble, and have it orbit a real sun? Would work just as well, and be much cheaper. Plus, you actually have night, instead of having to rely on shadow-squares or such, and you can scale it down more if you need to.

I have a very large population and you never know when some one will come along with a weapon that can destroy whole worlds. I am in a thread like that right now.

I want a Dyson Sphere... Dyson Spheres are cool, and HUGEMUNGANTUANESQUEASS!!!!! And I'd spend centuries to build it, and then blow it up five minutes later when I got bored!

That would be a terrible waste of resources

Kinda the point.

You misunderstand ... I meant if it would be if you built it then destroyed it because you were bored.

Actually, I have this theory that NS itself is set on a Ringworld...

How else could it hold millions of nations? ;)

Sounds logical to me! Of course it might be set on a huge Dyson Sphere too :D

Kormanthor is proud to announce the opening of their Ring World to Kormanthorian and Allied colonist in a secret adjoining solar system to the Nelchizedeke Cluster.
