The Jan Mayen exhibition [Earth III]

Late at night the Carrier battle group leaved Longyearbyen on Svalbard. Almost at the same time an Amphibious battle group leaved the port in Torshavn on Faeroe Islands. The two battle groups were heading to the same place: Jan Mayen Island – in the borderlands of the Arctic Ocean and the Norwegian Sea.

The distance from the Faeroe Islands to Jan Mayen islands is about 580 miles, and from Longyearbyen on Svalbard it’s about 650 miles. The closest neighbor to Jan Mayen Island is Greenland, only situated 280 miles away (Iceland 350 miles).

The small island of Jan Mayen is only about 373 km2 (144 sq. mi), it contains a tiny village where almost every people on the island lives, and the worlds north most active volcano Beeremberg. (OOC: In RL there are hardly no inhabitants, I will RP that there is about 4,000 people living on the island).

Most of the inhabitants live on fishing. A meteorological weather station is one of the biggest non-fishing employees, with around 300 employed.

Since there are no military forces on the island, the so-called invasion went smooth strategically. The hard thing will be to convince the inhabitants that Kopparbergs control over the island is a good thing.
The first thing the troops did when they landed on the island was to secure the TV- and radio station. All broadcasts were stopped immediately by sending out a distort signal. When the broadcast house was under control, a new broadcast began with information to the inhabitants about what was going on:

“Dear fellow inhabitants of Jan Mayen Island, this is the King of Kopparbergs speaking. As you have noticed we have sent a large military force to your island. We do not want to harm you, all we want is to help you to raise the living standard. How many of you aren’t tired of fishing all day long? How many of you are willing to try another job? We’re here to help you. As far as I know, we haven’t fired a single bullet on this island. That’s not necessary. Our mission here on Jan Mayen Island is to build a military base – that of course will be used to defend the island – as well as to serve other military ships landing here. At the base we must hire about 1.500 civilian people. And we’re going to build a new nuclear power plant at the foot of Beeremberg. You don’t have to be afraid of the Nuclear power plant, it’ll be very safe. At the NPP we’re going to hire around 2.000 people. The power generated at the power plant will be exported to Greenland and maybe Iceland. Thanks to the heat from the volcano and the cold water in the sea it will be very cheap to generate power here. And at last, we’re going to build many off shore oilrigs in the sea around the island – the personnel needed for that is around 1.500 people. This will make a total of around 5.000 new jobs on this island. 3.000 of the will be settled with people moving here from other places around Kopparbergs, but 2.000 new job opportunities is free for you!

The Jan Mayen Island is going to be a province in Kopparbergs with home rule in every question except foreign politics and Defense politics. No income tax will be paid to the kingdom, every single tax-penny will stay on the island.

And at last, we have JAS-planes in the air circulating over the island 24/7, we have many marine soldiers on the streets. But you don’t have to take care about that – as long as you don’t try to get rid of them… Thank you for your time, folks! Welcome to the Kingdom of Kopparbergs! This is King Carl Gustav XX speaking.”

Three days after the initial take-over of the Jan Mayen Island, things were going back to normal for the inhabitants. Except for one thing – there were many soldiers on the streets, and the JAS-planes still were circulating all over the island 24/7.
The construction of the military base has started. Ships were sailing to and from Jan Mayen continuously with equipment from Faeroe Islands and Svalbard. The construction of the nuclear power plant has not begun as the military base was prioritized.

Official Press release from the Kingdom of Kopparbergs
A couple of days ago we invited the Jan Mayen Island to join the Kingdom of Kopparbergs. We now pronounce the Jan Mayen Island as the fifth province of Kopparbergs.

The Island will be given full autonomy in all questions except foreign politics and defense politics.

A large navy base is being constructed at the island, and the base may be used by nations allied with Kopparbergs. Later on also a nuclear power plant will be built.
