The legion is the basic unit of Blacktowers standing army of career soldiers, the legionaries, who are all Blacktoweran citizens and fight primarily as foot-soldiers (infantry). The number of Legions is growing constantley with the Increased growth of Blacktowers population.
Though the exact numbers of men in a legion varies, the basic pattern of organization is the same. The smallest unit is the tent group (contubernium), composed of 8 men who share a tent, a mule, and eating equipment. These are organized into a disciplinary unit called a century, under the command of a centurion. The basic fighting unit is a cohort, composed of six centuries (480 men plus 6 centurions). The legion itself is composed of ten cohorts, and the first cohort has many extra men—the clerks, engineers, and other specialists who did not usually fight—and the senior centurion of the legion, the primipilus, or “number one javelin.”

The Blacktoweran Legionary

A legionary has to be a Blacktoweran citizen, though he might be given his citizenship upon enrollment. If he has the opportunity then should bring a letter of recommendation. If accepted, he will receive a sum of money to cover his traveling expenses to the legion. When he arrives at the Legion he must take a military oath. He is then posted to a Century (His Unit), where The oath is renewed every New Years Day.

New recruits need alot of training and experience before they can be called the equal of a veteran legionary. He must be taught to march:during his years of service he will be expected to go on a 30km route march three times a month. He is taught how to build a camp and is drilled twice a day. (The fully trained legionary only has to drill once a day.) He is given general training in stone slinging, swimming, riding, and spear throwing. He learns how to vault on to horseback and to mount and dismount fully armed, with shield, from either side.

For weapons training, a stake about the height of a man is set up. The recruit is armed with a wicker shield and wooden sword, both of twice standard weight, and attacks the stake, learning to thrust, not slash with his sword. For Pilum throwing, stuffed targets are set a distance away and wooden Pilums with bronze tips are used, which weigh double the standard battle Pilum. Once fundementals have been instilled, mock battles are arranged for which the sword and pilum have their points covered to avoid serious accidents.

The pay for Legionaries is about three times that of an auxiliary infantryman, although the auxiliary cavalryman's pay is close to that of the legionary infantryman.

Large monetary awards are paid after a victory. Some occasional supplements to pay are be needed to make army life more attractive.

Soldiers can and do save money, even though they have to pay for food clothing, bedding, boots and arms and armour out of their pay. Food and clothing are standardized payments; arms no doubt after the initial outlay, rarely loom large, although soldiers adorn their own armour with gold and silver inlay.

Savings are deposited with the standard bearers, who handle pay and savings in addition to their other duties. Some are compulsory deductions which are set off against debts for food etc., or half of any donatives to be kept for the soldier against the day of his retirement.

Service is for 25 years as discharge is carried out every year. On retirement the legionary is given a gratuity in the the form of land and money.
