Dr. Andreas Rhoodie stood back from his workbench. At last, he thought, It is done. The device was about the size of a car engine. But this engine will be able to move much more than a few thousand pounds of steel. He moved with his aides to an area behind a protective blast screen. He picked up his radio and called the Reception Room.
"RR, this is Rhoodie. We are preparing to begin the Navigator Project."
"Roger that, we're ready when you are. Send it over."
The techs began to power up the engine. One of Rhoodie's aides turned to him.
"Doctor, could you explain how this thing works?"
"Of course. You are familiar with the space-time continuum, yes?" The tech nodded. "Well, space is not a straight line. Space and time are curved. Oh, we don't notice it on a large scale. It appears smooth from far away, sort of like an orange. However, as the scale decreases, we can see the various dimples and bumps that cover the surface of the orange. Similarly, from a small perspective, small is all curved and ten-dimensional. What the foldspace engine does is take these myriad points and bring them all together, creating a sort of gate through which a ship can travel. We'll begin the test now. Watch."
The engine finished powering and Rhoodie punched in the activation codes. Then the engine whirred for a few moments, and it was gone. No flash of light, no smoke, no loud bang. Then the radio chirped.
"Dr. Rhoodie! It's here!"
The door to the universe was open.
