Antonius walked out onto the balcony in his high chamber in the Imperial palace. It was early spring, and the air was still cool. Trails of smoke rose up over certain areas of the city, reminders of the vicious battle that had raged over a month ago in the streets of the city, and even in the very rooms of the palace. With the death of the usurper, the majority of his legions and supporters had surrendered to the true emperor. Most had been given full pardon by Antonius, however several of the late Alexei’s most trusted confidants had been put to the sword. They had been too dangerous to keep around. There was always the possibility of another coup.
With the return of the true Emperor, the chaos of Alexei’s reign was slowly being reversed. The slum crusades were winding down with the aid of the GIIS. Many of the fundamentalist leaders had already been rounded up and executed. However, there was still a distinct movement, and it seemed that the failure of the holy revolution had managed to consolidate the fundamentalist fanatics’ organization.
The few cells that represented the movement had moved their areas of operation to smaller cities in the southern Empire. They now called themselves the Generian Orthodox Army (GOMA). A distinct head of the movement had not yet been identified, but for now the fundamentalists seemed to at least be somewhat inactive.
The Ukraine and the new territories had posed a new problem entirely. What was Antonius to do with the subjugated lands? The people were broken, tormented, enslaved, weary of war and abuse. Antonius had begun by freeing a majority of the enslaved, and restoring certain rights to them. The Imperial government was currently working on fully incorporating the new territories as Imperial provinces, a task that would take several months.
Still, there was resistance among the populace of Generian Ukraine. Terrorist activities were on the rise. Just the other week, three Imperial provincial government buildings had been bombed, leaving two dozen Imperial citizens dead. This was certainly a threat to the infrastructure of the new lands, but one that hopefully could be contained.
As Antonius pondered the state of the Empire, he was joined by his mistress, Lady Alexa. She came up silently behind him, as she was apt to do, and put her hands on his shoulders. He turned and embraced his woman. Whatever the state of affairs, it was good to be back home, back in the heart of his great Empire.
