Anarchist upsurge in Kanabia, Nationalist Coup

Kanabian Broadcasting Agency Special Report

"We interrupt this screening of when Leon met Natalia, and bring the nation a special report. We have just received news that terrorists have taken over several government facilities within provincial cities by...what?"

"Move, comrade. On the floor. Please."

The news anchor does as ordered, and a man wearing a black mask similar to those worn by the Zapatista movement in Mexico takes his position.

"We have a report of our own to deliver....

Before I begin, I would like to express my extreme regret at the circumstances in which I must deliver our message. However, we fail to see how we can deliver it with as profound an impact otherwise...

Now. I would like to ask all Kanabians to think of the circumstances with which you currently live. You have some of the best healthcare and educational facilities the world has ever seen. You have among the highest wages in the world. You have everything you could ever want for...or do you? Our leaders seem to have forgotten something. We have elected a Communist government for the 58th year in a row. Just today, our 2 billionth citizen was born. Where else is there to go? Apparently nowhere, given the recent lack of voter interest in our elections. The answer is simple. It is time for the true revolution to begin. The state must be abolished, and it is now within our means to do so. Our means of production and social welfare are already regulated from the bottom up. We already vote on decisions in the workplace, the community and the nation. The transition shall need only be symbolic.

We will experience hardship and resistance from the outside, of course...but it does not matter. They resist because they fear. They resist because they have something to lose.

We would like the citizens of Kanabia to call for a referendum from the government regarding our future direction immediately. If they resist, there is proof that they must be destroyed. If it comes to pass, and the motion fails, we will fade into obscurity and remain quietly disappointed as to the loss of faith in our Communist system...if we succeed however, we can look forward to a new age in human history.

I leave the choice in your hands."

Roquefort, Presidents Residence

It was his day off. President Kotovesky was having a break...He had been doing this for 12 years and was getting a bit tired of the daily rigours of the job. He sat back in his chair and flicked through the channels on the TV, before settling on a classical music documentary. Suddenly, the screen changed, and he almost choked on his coffee upon seeing an almost identical speech to the other, oblivious to the fact that they were going on across the TV network.

Then the phone began ringing.

But as he answered it, uniformed army soldiers burst through the door and grabbed him by the neck, then knocked him unconscious with a baton, dragging him into an unmarked car...

Ho Chi Minh City, Popular Communist Party Branch HQ
Marie Lefebre, opposition leader, grew increasingly nervous on the other end of the phone upon hearing no answer...then the TV in the room flickered again and she was treated to another speech, this time with the colonial blue and white flag of Kanabia in the background, as opposed to the red and yellow adopted since indepenence. Marie guessed (and correctly) that this was in the Erimatige museum in Roquefort...

"CITIZENS OF KANABIA. This is General Anatoly Korenchkin. It is my sincere regret to inform you that because of the weak willed regime currently in power in Roquefort and refusing to protect us from terrorist upsurges, I have taken it into my authority to assume the presidency and take President Kotovesky into protective custody. Opposition leader Lefebre is nowhere to be found, and we suspect her complicity with these anarchists..."

"What?!?" Marie screamed.

"...In any event, new elections will be held in time. However, i'm sure the citizens of Kanabia are aware, present security concerns make them unfeasible right now, so they will be set at a later date. I am sincerely regretful for the circumstances and I assure you that the armed forces and myself are completely committed to restoring order immediately. Whats that? Oh...Some news I just received. Anarchists have just bombed the Popular Communist Party HQ in Ho Chi Minh city...no word on the casualties, just yet. I will return you to the normal screening of "When Leon met Natalia" now.

Before the image flickered back into normal programming, Korenchkin leaned forward, and for a split second, barely noticeable, blood spattered on the flag behind him was made visible.

Marie panicked at Korenchkins declaration..."Bombed? What?"

Then, the sound of helicopters approaching intensified her fears. The army Mi-28's fired several missiles in quick succession, causing the building to explode in a fiery shower of concrete.

Across the nation, the army rolled out onto the streets. Martial law had been declared, but the soldiers were as confused as anyone.

In response to the emergency in Kanabia, an emergency meeting of the Supreme Soviet of the Mora Tauan Soviet Socialist Republic.
"Comrades, the Goldman City Supreme Soviet applauds the actions of the anarchist movement in Kanabia. We in Mora Tau were successful in abolishing the state, why can’t the Kanabians? During my last visit to Kanabia, I was appalled by the amount of police I saw! It is just like it was here before the revolution!"
"You are forgetting about the coup, Comrade Fairbanks. What about the coup?" asked Jensen of the Hamilton Supreme Soviet.
"I am saying we should intervene on behalf of the anarchists," Fairbanks replied.
"Are we sure they have popular support?"
"That is a good question. One which is easily answered. We should mobilise our forces to establish Tauan control in Kanabia and reinstate the pre-coup leadership on the provision that they hold nation-wide polls to establish which direction the people of Kanabia wish to go on."
"All right. Any more discussion?" the chair asked. 5 minutes passed. "No? OK. We have 2 proposals. All in favour of waiting for news from Kanabia before acting? 10 minutes, comrades.
The 700 delegates cast their votes via their computers.
"623 in favour, motion passed. All in favour of military intervention if it is called for? 10 minutes..."
"....582 in favour, motioned passed."

<MAFCC HUMINT Offices>

Having monitored activity in Kanabia around their growth into the 2 billion citizen population bracket, several HUMINT agents were located in country. One had even managed to join the opposition party, and had a job in their HQ in Ho Chi Minh City.

All of a sudden, seven reports appeared within minutes of each other. Six spoke of a potential coup and the abduction of the elected President by Nationalist rebels. The seventh was a computer generated report, simply stating a loss of contact with an agents subdermal transmitter, only caused by death.

The reports were printed off, formed into a document along with latest satellite information and ELINT reports, and passed straight along to the King. Within half an hour of receiving the first report, the King sent a message to General Anatoly Korenchkin.

To: General Anatoly Korenchkin
From: King Michael I

I demand you immediately stand down your forces and release President Kotovesky immediately. Failure to do so will lead to McLeodian military intervention in your supposed coup.

To His Highness, King Michael I.

The actions undertaken by my superiors have been in consideration of the need for security in an increasingly unstable situation. Marxist President Kotovesky will be released in due time, however at this moment we cannot guarantee his safety. He is currently located in a to-remain-unnamed military facility. Given recent disappearances of high profile politicians, we feel that this is the best course of action at this moment in time.

Unfortunately, General Korenchkin was unable to reply directly to your communique, as regretfully his attentions are currently diverted elsewhere. I hope I have satisfied any concern on your behalf.

"Uh. I thought so."
"Arm the cruise missiles just incase. You never know."

OFFICIAL RESPONSE FROM COMMUNIST LOUISIANA

We stand firmly against the coup that is taking place in Kanibia. We would like to openly warn that if President Kotovesky is not released ASAP, we will send in two thousand Vermillion Marines to crush the coup violently and we will not show mercy. You have been warned and our troops will be airborn in less than 12 hours.

Premier Daniel Dufour,

I have half a million loyal troops on the streets of the capital, Roquefort, as I write this. I have battlecruisers and submarines stopping any foreign shipping entering our territorial waters, with force if necessary. I have thousands of military aircraft at my direct disposal. I can muster many millions more reservists who would support my cause. Do not try my patience by placing demands upon us, you have no authority or ability to do so. Your petty threat does not bother me.

General Anatoly Korenchkin.

Situation of the Armed Forces

As General Korenchkin is a war hero and well liked among the rest of the military, his support is widespread. However it is not absolute- many other generals oppose Korenchkin for being a political opportunist, particularly when the city of Kanazawa was destroyed in a terrorist nuclear blast and his using the situation to obtain joint-presidency for some time.

The armed forces are confused. It is hard to draw a line over which elements support the Government, Which support Korenchkin, and even which parts support the Anarchist uprising...

The offical response by the Aztec National League:

This coup presents a danger to our ally of Kanabia. While we strongly oppose the coup and it's intent of causing destablization in Kanabian society, we can not support the actions against the true leader, President Kotovesky. We demand the release and re-instating of Kotovesky and we ask both the first Communist International and the Allied Socialist Union not to offer assistance to General Anatoly Korenchkin. We fully put our support behind President Kotovesky and support his government.

It is with regret we can not assist the people of Kanabia in this dark hour, but to help General Korenchkin in asserting dominance over the nation will be just as damaging.

OOC: Just to keep things clear, Korenchkin, in fact, is a far-right wing Nationalist, not an anarchist. Basically it's going to be a three way civil war between nationalists, socialists, and anarchists.

IC: Rangoon, Burma Socialist Republic

Anarchists controlled the city, and it was a peaceful takeover, considering the premier of Burma gave full support to them and most of the army followed suit.

However, one army element gave its support to Korenchkin, brutally subjugating the city of Moulmein.

1300 hours

"On the horizon." The Leopard II gunner spoke to his commander. Their tanks had been repainted with a Blue circle- The military symbol of Old Kanabia, favoured by nationalists.

"SABOT- Up!"

The gun roared. "All the way!"

The truck on the distant horizon exploded. "Good shot." Mangled body parts appeared to spill from the wreckage, but it was hard to tell at this distance.

"Next target- Hit that Propane tank."

The process repeated and the tank exploded, destroying most of the other vehicles in the Caravan Park.

As they approached, the corpses of several Louisianan holiday makers were crushed under the tank treads. Those still alive were treated brutally, the women raped and men having appendages cut off while they screamed in agony. Children were decapitated and their heads thrown upon stakes. Several men were spared for a more sinister purpose.

Several older BMP and BRDM vehicles were then brought out, these painted with red and black anarchist livery. The surviving men were dressed in shabby uniforms and made to crew the vehicles, under threat of extreme pain. Other prisoners brought along from Moulmein were also used as "anarchist soldiers".The vehicles were then used as target practice- The whole process made to look as though a brutal Anarchist attack had been avenged by "heroic" nationalist soldiers.

URGENT - To Communist Louisianan Citizens within Kanabia

There have been a number of attacks directed against Louisianian citizens in semi-remote areas by anarchist forces. We advise all Louisianians to relocate to the safe-zones of Roquefort, Hanoi, Bangkok, and Kuala Lumpur for your own protection and safety. A military escort will be provided on request.

With sincere concern,

General Anatoly Korenchkin.

To Premiers Daniel Dufour and Quetzalcoatl of Communist Louisiana and Aztec National League

I am sorry to report that several hundred Louisianian citizens are missing and suspected held by Anarchist forces. We suggest that it would be more prudent for us to co-operate in relieving this threat rather than opposing eachother.

Premier Quetzalcoatl looked over the letter he recevied from Lt. Gen Coswald. Something wasn't right. Missing Lousianan citizens, not good. He picked up the phone on his desk and pressed a button, as the phone connected, he said "Hello, this is Quetzalcoatl. Put me in a three-way conference call with Minister Tonahuac and AIA Director Fernando Garza.

-_-_-_-_-_-

After two hours of discussing plans, Quetzalcoatl summoned Dr. Darius Wellington, Vice-Premier Coyotepec and Commerce Minister Congressman Izel into his office. Within 5 minutes, they were all assymbled.

Premier Quetzalcoatl began slowly, "Gentlemen, we are facing a bad situation. Kanabia is in an uprising and the government has been replaced by a military leader. Now, we are going to have a spy mission. The AIA and Ministry of Intellegence is beginning it now, but I need you to do some work too. Coyotepec, I need you to divert your full attention to monitoring the mission. You will be working with AIA Director Garza for it's duration."

Coyotepec nodded.

"Dr. Wellington," Quetzalcoatl continued, "I need you to contact Communist Lousiana's governement and tell them of our intentions. Ask them if we want to do a joint investigation."

"Yes, Premier." Dr. Wellington said.

Quetzalcoat then said "Congressman Izel, I want you to have advisory notices going out to all travel agencies and buisnesses that Kanabia is a hot bed for unstability. Discourage trade and travel to Kanabia and monitor everything that is shipped to Kanabia and everything that comes into Kanabia. I don't want any ANL arms to be going to Kanabia, as some of our people will be sympathetic to the nationalists or the anarchists."

Although a tough assignment, Congressman Izel said "Surely."

Tenochitilan, AIA Headquaters...

A very tired Minister Tonahuac stood by a very tired Director Garza. They have been working since 6 AM without stop. Both mens' eyes had dark circles around them and both appeared exhausted. Quetzalcoatl, who was also with them, was terribly exhausted too. This has been a long day.

3 men and one woman walked into the Conference Room. They knew they had a big mission in front of them. As the four walked in, the door was closed and locked. Premier Quetzalcoatl started,

"Greetings, comrades. You have been selected for a covert mission of extreme importance of the Union. Although you will be working in the lands of our ally, Kanabia, do not be fooled, this mission will be as dangerous as anyother, if not more so. I assume you are familar with "the protocol"?

The agents. With that, Fernando Garza began.

"In this mission, you will be going into Kanabia to investigate the situation with the coup. I will read off your various tasks. You're mission is to:

-Observe and report any crimes against humanity,
-Give a summary of the Anarchist movement
-Give a summary of the Nationalists
-Find contacts to loyalist opposition and try to find out ways to assist them."

The four agents were given several files and looked over them. 15 minutes later, Director Garza then said "Are there any questions?"

One agent, Irene Newton, raised her hand. She asked, "How are we going to get there?

Fernando Garza answered, "You'll know in time."

Minister Tonahuac then said "There is a possibility you will be working with Louisianan intellegence, but we have not recived a reply from Premier DuFour. Also, keep in mind, you will be armed, as usual, but do not use lethal force until last resort, you do not want to blow your cover."

With that, the four agents stood up and headed to the door. Two of the agents were stopped before they could leave.

Premier Quetzalcoatl went up to them "Lt. Commander Xihuitl and Agent Douglas Newton, remain here for a second."

Suprised, both ben stopped and turned around.

Quetzalcoatl, Garza and Tonahuac stepped up to them, Tonahuac then said "Considering your expertise in this field, you both are reciving another mission, a very specialized mission. You are to work together to find out what happened to President Kotovesky and his current condition. Secondary to that is to find opposition leader Marie Lefebre."

Both men nodded and went on their way.

Brunei Military AFB

Forces loyal to the Kotovesky government and opposed to Korenchkin are chiefly focused in North Borneo and Brunei...

The state-of-the-art "Blinder" bombers prepared to launch with their escort of K-29's. (MiG-29 copy)

Their target was the Military shipyard and ordinance storage facility near Ho Chi Minh city, and the idea was to send a message to army units unsure of whether to support Korenchkin that his government was indeed illegitimate...

"At Initial Point, now, sir." The Co-pilot of the lead Blinder spoke.
"All aircraft, begin bomb run. Escorts, stay frosty."

Several reserve AF MiG-21's launched from a nearby airbase. They were shot down easily before they even entered radar range. Several K-29's began a low-speed strafe of the airfield, exploding several aging aircraft on the ground. SAM defences were curiously inactive.

"3...2...1...Bombs away."

The pilots watched through their infa-red cameras as several tons of bombs rained upon the warehouses and docks...a massive firestorm erupted as fuel tanks and ordinance exploded. Several older destroyers in the harbour were knocked onto their sides and sunk. Cargo ships burnt fiercely...some suffering direct bomb hits, and sinking, but the harbour was too shallow to let them do so fully, so they sat there half submerged.

"That was easy. What's going on?"

Ho Chi Minh City, the same time

Machine guns fired, and Nationalist troops stepped over the corpses of many hundreds of Anarchist protestors. Buildings were set alight as civilians took shelter within...

Seeing the carnage, the reserve forces that were called up mutinied. However, they were fighting a losing battle.

T-80 tanks burned, unable to compete with Leclercs and T-99's.

In a last ditch attempt, they raided a major arms warehouse to the north of the city, as both sides were running short on ammunition. They were lucky to get there before the Nationalists, who began to withdraw to a navy-army storage complex to the south. Civilians spontaneously joined the reservists, taking up the arms of dead soldiers to fight the nationalists.

Then, suddenly, a massive explosion could be heard, and a fiery mushroom cloud rose from the direction that the Nationalists were withdrawing towards...

The worried look upon the faces of Nationalists was enough to inspire the opposition to pursue and eliminate them. Some surrendered. Others were shot in their backs while trying to run, or their vehicles decimated by RPG attacks out of apartment windows.

Ho Chi Minh city was in Anarchist hands...for the time being. Over a hundred thousand were dead on the streets.

In Roquefort, a hand hurredily scribbled a signature on a note authorising strategic bombardment of Ho Chi Minh City with artillery and aircraft...

Tenochitilan...

Four black cars moved quickly down the metropolitan streets. They were in a huge hurry; this mission had to begin now. One by one, the cars picked up one of the Agents and headed to Tenochitilan International Airport.

AIA Director Fernando Garza stood before the four agents. He looked over them and then said "Due to emergency circumstances, you are to be deployed to Kanabia immediately. If we do work with Lousisanan agents, you'll meet up with them in Kanabia. Good luck with this mission."

Quietly, the four agents get on board an Iu-86 and take their seats.

The director of this mission, Miguel Herrera, walked through the isle and put his bag in the overhead compartment. Officially, he was an ambassador for the Diplomatic Core, but like most members of the Diplomatic Core, he was an agent for the AIA. 55 years old, his hair was a mixture of black and gray. A tall and lanky man, many thought him to be very quiet and reserved. However, he is a skillful diplomat and an intelligent person.

As Miguel Herrera sat down, another agent walked on board. Irene Newton, a younger agent, was a novice AIA Agent. This was her first real assignment, but despite this lack of experience, she had the makings of an excellent spy. Although short at 5'4", she was very pretty yet quiet. This was either from nervousness or excitement.

As Irene Newton sat down, her older brother, Douglas Newton, walked in. He was the brains of the operation. He ranks as having the highest intelligence of all the AIA agents. The 46 year old Douglass was ten years older then his younger sister, Irene, but, he was a veteran spy. His features showed his non-Aztec, British roots, but he was as loyal to the Union as any citizen was.

The last and youngest Agent to board was Xihuitl. Although 23, he was a veteran as well. Although not part of the AIA, he is often times drafted from the Jaguar Warrior Infantrymen to do AIA work. He is the brawn of the operation and a master at covert operations. Although short, his military training and career made him well built. Being pure Aztec, he looked very much like a Native American. However, instead of wearing his usual military camouflage jumpsuit, he was wearing regular civilian clothing. As soon as he entered, he gazed out of the window at the setting sun. However, within 5 minutes, they were off.

Southern Asia
11:33 PM

The long trip from Mexico to Southern Asian Hogsweat was finally coming to an end. Despite the late night, none of the agents slept. Rather, they waited in anticipation to begin.

Suddenly, in the darkness, the jet landed and came down the tarramack. Miguel Herrera looked outside, completely dark...only a few lights to guide the plane on the runway and the moon to give the ground a light-blue illumination. Already, the effects of jet lag could be felt. However, that was an issue that could not affect the mission.

The airplane rolled to a stop. The door opened and the four agents left their plane. It was a bit of a waste to send such a large airliner like the Iu-86 for just four people and equipment, but, that was the only plane availble at the time. The four agents walked out of the jet into the humid night. Although south of the equator, the weather wasn't all that different from the weather in the rain forests back home.

The agents picked up their equipment and got into a military jeep. In about an hour, they drove to a port where they would be transported by boat to Kanabia.

As soon as they reached the dock, they all got out and found the boat captain. The man was dressed in a tragic Hawaiian shirt, faded jeans and a straw hat. Miguel Herrera walked up to him and shook his hand and calmly said:

"Hello, Agent Torres. We're here to be transported to the site."

The agent said "Yes, I am aware of your mission. The boat is all ready and filled with fuel. Just load your stuff on."

Herrera turned around and said to them, "Alright, load up your stuff."

The three other agents loaded up their bags and entered the small and rickety boat. Agent Herrera talked to the captain.

"So tell me, how long have you been stationed here. I haven't seen you since the Academy days.

The equally aged boat captain said "Too long. The AIA has very little interest in Hogsweat. In fact, the only reason why I'm here is to drop you off in Kanabia and pick you guys up. After that, I'm elegable for retirement."

Quietly, Herrea said "Retirement. I used to think that was so long away in the future. Now it's at my doorstep. Oh well, we better get under way. We need to use the cover of darkness."

The two other agents walked on to the boat and checked in with the others. The Newtons were already fast asleep and Xihuitl was looking out over the stern. Miguel Herrera sat next to Xihuitl.

"So what do you think of this mission?" Inquired Herrea.

Xihuitl, still looking out over the black tranquill ocean sighed and said "I know I'm young and a rookie compared to you, but, I know danger. I can sense it. However, I think we'll make it. I fought in the worst battles of the first ANL civil war, then I was a spy in the Mississippian Commonwealth. At least politically, the ANL and Kanabia are allies."

Herrera simply said "Sometimes, our focus shouldn't be on who we presive as a threat, but those who we presive as allies. We could be getting into a power keg."

Quietly, the boat started off in the black darkness of night and headed towards the Kanabian shore.
