Taishita, Marimaia

Premier Chiisu Suun smiled as he inspected the blade of Tatsuko Sayo.

"So it's finished?"

Yishu Ma nodded. "Yes Excellency. The project finished well ahead of schedule; you can move in whenever you wish. May I say that it is about time you found a residence worthy of yourself; Luozao and Attahuiga are fine palaces, but they pale in comparison to the restored Ayutthaya."

Tian Yao smirked. "Can we see it?"

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ayutthaya, Marimaia

The helicopter ride from Taishita was fairly uneventful, and eventually the First Couple saw the gleaming spires of Suun's new primary residence towering over the trees.

"Beautiful..."

Suun was in awe at the sight of his new home. The ancient city had been the capital of Thai empires for over 400 years; after extensive restoration and reconstruction work by the Ministry of National Development, Ayutthaya was now an enormous palace complex. The reconstruction work had been careful to incorporate surviving structures into the new complex, which bore architectural features from all of Marimaia's native cultures.

Once the helicopter landed, Suun and Tian were escorted around the complex. It had all been completed to Suun's specifications; a central residence area for the First Couple with various offices, studies, recreation rooms and the like; sub-offices for all of the governmental ministries; barracks for NeoSuun Guard personnel; vast beautiful gardens; and a large antiquities hall for the storage of artifacts.

Tian smiled at Suun as they looked around. "I can imagine Suu Kyi and Jamil coming here to pay tribute to their emperor."

Suun smirked. "I'm no emperor. Merely a Premier. Although if the Party have their way, Darin Thanarat will be crowning me as divine king before the year is out."

Tian nodded. "Devaraja Chiisu...not too bad. I prefer Emperor Chiisu myself. You have the palace, you have the popular support, and with Darin on side you now have the religious authority."

"I don't know. Our allies in the SSRC may see a monarchy as 'counter-revolutionary'."

"I hardly think that we should concern ourselves with that. Dra-pol does what it wants without asking us, so why should we ask them if we can grant our beloved leader the highest accolade we can?"

The Hudecian foreign ministry had been watching the Marimaian expansion over the past several months with great interest. First there was the invasion of Burma and the occupation of several large tracts of land, possibly indefinately.

Then there was the Bonstock question, and Hudecian officials worried about an expansion of Marimaian control and influence in the region.

It was well known that Drapol and Marimaia were close allies, but it was also well known that Drapol and Hudecia had had better times. Then again, things had been worse between Drapol and Hudecia. In any case, the Hudecian government was interested in the extent of Marimaia's influence in the region.

The Quinntonian government too, sees this as a cause for concern, not being able to tell if this is a benevolent dictatorship or not. Though any friend of Dra-pol can't be up to much good.

The resurrection and sustainment of Asian culture, in the face of the immoral and ignorant culture of the warmongering Europeans, has long been a goal of the Yamani people.

Marshal Kunzai listened intently as the specialists went over their latest successes. He was visiting Facility ZQ9, one of three vast underground research and manufacturing complexes under the administration of the Marimaian military. While conventional hardware was either bought from abroad or produced by Shin Fai Armaments Concern, the more unique and experimental hardware was produced by the military itself. In this instance, the specialists had good news.

Professor Obanugaia was the head of ZQ9, and grinned as he reported to the Marshal. "Project NittleGrasper is a success! The first fully-functional aircraft will be completed tomorrow. We finally have our own stealth bomber."

Kunzai applauded. "Excellent! It will be worth the wait, I trust. What about How are the other projects?"

Obanugaia scratched his head. "More or less on target; we won't see any results for a while though. The genetics work is way off schedule I'm afraid; do we have any allies or friendly nations who could contribute anything?"

Kunzai shook his head. "Other than occasional rumours, we don't know of any nation who has what we're trying to get. Keep working; you have as much time as you need."

Taishita, Marimaia

The Temple of the Enlightened Buddha was a spectacular building; completed with government funding, the Temple provided the capital's Buddhist faithful with an impressive gathering point. The Temple was also the seat of power for Darin Thanarat, a widely-respected Theravadan cleric and the unofficial head of the Buddhist movement in Marimaia.

Darin was alone in his private chambers when his visitor arrived. Under normal circumstances, Hengren Yuan wouldn't have gone near the place, but as Interior Minister he had something important to discuss. Darin was the favoured cleric of the NeoSuunist government due to his constant support for the regime; this had won the Theravadans major concessions from the regime, leading to a fairly amicable relationship between state and faith. Despite the official 'atheist' stance of the NeoSuunists, Theravadan Buddhism was allowed to thrive simply because it posed no threat to them.

Darin dismissed the monk who had escorted Hengren, then offered the minister a seat.

"How nice to see you again so soon. May I offer you some form of refreshment?"

Hengren shook his head. "No thanks. I'm here on important business. As you and the rest of the populace must know, we're restoring the ancient sites around the nation; Ayutthaya has recently been completed, and Angkor Wat is still being worked on. I am here on behalf of His Excellency to offer you Angkor Wat as your home temple once restoration is complete."

Darin's eyes widened. "Such an honour must come at a high price; what am I required to do in return?"

"We want His Excellency coronated. We toyed with the idea of an Emperor, but we feel that 'Tiger King' is somewhat more apt. Of course, we'll need more than just secular authority in order to properly invest him with the title, so that is where you come in."

Darin smiled slightly. "I must give my blessing?"

"Oh no, you must conduct the ceremony. The NeoSuunist Party wants to work with you to create a fitting ceremonial coronation, and then you actually perform it on the day."

"I see." Darin blinked slowly. "What of the Muslims in the south? Or the Christians, if there are actually any left nowadays? Would it not incite them to have their secular Premier invested with Buddhist authority?"

Hengren smirked. "This will not be portrayed as a government initiative. You will express your desire to crown His Excellency, and he will, in time, humbly accept. If the other faiths wish to do the same, then they are more than free to do so."

Darin thought about it for a moment. "A monarch, after all these years?"

"Think about it; His Excellency Chiisu Suun, Tiger King of Marimaia. It has a nice ring to it. Then again, so does Darin Thanarat, High Arahant, Guardian of Angkor Wat and chief religious advisor to the throne."

OOC: Well, since this is behind-the-scenes stuff at the moment, the allies only know about this OOC. Although I feel a bit of explanation is required; Marimaia is a member of the SSRC, so everyone automatically assumed they are Communist. If you look at NeoSuunism (more details can be found in my 'Birthright To Greatness' thread), it's a lot more nationalistic. It's really closer to Fascism.

Anyhoo, there'll be more coming soon...

::People's Daily News evening report::

"Good evening everyone! I'm Honji..."

"...and I'm Miho! Welcome to People's Daily News!"

"Thanks Miho. Our top story tonight: Darin Thanarat, leader of our great nation's Buddhist adherents, has declared that he wishes to bestow a great honour on Premier Suun. Thanarat held a press conference earlier today, stating that he wished to coronate His Excellency as 'Tiger King'; according to Thanarat, this title is in gratitude for the wise and unsurpassable leadership that His Excellency has shown since he came to power. His Excellency has not yet responded to Thanarat's press conference, but a spokeperson for the Premier stated that an official response would probably take some time, as His Excellency would have to absorb the gravity of such a request."

"Well Honji, I think I speak for everyone when I say that His Excellency has richly deserved such an honour for a very long time; he has led us to victory over Myanmar and Bonstock, and we should grant the recognition he deserves. Now, the question is what do you think? Please email or phone us with your opinions, and we'll read them out on-air! We have already had a few responses...

'Hell yeah! It's about bloody time His Excellency was recognised for his neverending sacrifices for this nation!' That's from Rakdim in Yutu Yinchon. This is from Lishe in Taishita: 'His Excellency is too good to be a Premier; we should make him a King so that he can completely outshine the leaders of the inferior nations we have to deal with.' Well said Lishe...finally, this is from Niran in Shanjing: 'I'm a Theravadan Buddhist, and we have always been well treated by His Excellency when other nations have oppressed and attacked their Buddhist population. Darin Thanarat was correct to offer this title to Premier Suun, as it reflects what we all think. Thank you, Premier Suun, for giving us such a beautiful home'. Well, looks like overwhelming support so far, wouldn't you agree Honji?"

"Indeed I would. In other news...."

BSS Headquarters, Singapore
Six Months Ago

Lord Harald looked from behind his desk in the windowless room. His hands, whitened by his constant presence in underground bunkers, grabbed a report. More about Premier Suun. Some about Bonstock's great destruction of Mergui, which had just taken place. Some about the Marimaians gathering forces on the borders.

A man walked in. "Lord Harald, more news about Premier Suun."

"What is it, Captain bin Abdul?"

"More forces on the border. They were really angered at our actions in Mergui."

"We were making an example of them. Perhaps that backfired. We should have simply taken 20 men and shot them infront of everybody as a reprisal for the killings of our soldiers. They take our sons, we take theirs. In a drunken orgy I myself ordered 200 virgin girls from Mergui taken for my pleasure. I can see my mistake now. Be sure they are all released. Alcohol must not decide the affairs of state."

"It is too late, I guess, for us to do much about it."

"Indeed. But I would be most content to see Premier Suun of Marimaia and General Liu of Sino dead."

"That may take a while, sir."

"Most likely, my boy, I will be dead. Infact, I intend to die. In a few months, the world will be arrayed against us as always. Since our invasion of Japann we have been pariahs. Perhaps they will someday forgive the Bonstocknian people. Perhaps we are all doomed to a cycle of death."

"What should I do, sir?"

"Captain, I want you to tell the BSS to murder Premier Suun. As long as he lives, that order is in place, even in the event that the Bonstocknian state should cease to exist, and the BSS disband."

"Do you think Bonstock will last as a state?"

"No. But I shall be pleased to take our enemies down with us."

"As you wish, sir."

He left the room. Lord Harald turned around, knowing his hours were numbered. Silently, he accepted his fate, and that of his country. With him gone, no one could possibly hold together the great Federal Republic, and it would collapse as empires did. So the great Bonstocknian empire would fall, replaced by the darkness of the future.

Six months later
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The crowds continued chanting, "Out with the foreigners!" as Khalid bin Abdul walked around the protest. Bonstock had fallen by now, but orders were orders. Bin Abdul had no choice but to destroy Premier Suun.

As protesters burned an effigy of Suun, bin Abdul looked up and smiled. An omen, perhaps. But these were no times for superstition. He had a job to do. He hailed a cab, and asked the driver to take him to the airport. All the way, he looked out the window at Marimaian troops, wondering how such a mighty nation as Bonstock had succumbed so greatly.

The military personnel guarding the airport were confused when the taxi pulled up; due to the resistance being met, the Marimaians were only allowing members of Jamil's government to fly out of there. As the passenger got out, he was immediately whisked away by security for interrogation.

Ayutthaya, Marimaia

The rest of the cabinet sat around waiting for Chiisu and Tian; a summons from the Premier was not something to be late answering. When the First Couple finally entered, Chiisu took his usual seat at the head of the table, with Tian standing at his side. Chiisu grinned at the cabinet.

"Well, since I am to become King, I think I want to exercise my prerogative. The position of Premier will remain after I become King; I will remain as head of the NeoSunnist Party and ruler of the nation, but I want a Premier to run the day-to-day governance. The Premier will act as Minister for the Civil Service, and will represent me at all meetings and functions which I can't attend."

The cabinet looked at each other nervously. The idea of one of them being elevated to Premier was uncomfortable, as they had all grown to regard each other as equals. Suun laughed as he saw their expressions.

"Oh, it won't be any of you guys. You're all too important and vital in your current positions; without you, the new Premier won't know what she's doing."

"SHE? A woman?"

Suun nodded at Wanfa Kong. "Yes Wanfa, a female of the opposite sex. She'll make me proud; she will bring leadership and strength to her new position, and he'll keep you lot in line if I'm away."

"Who?"

Suun looked at Fanrong. "Apsara Supachai."

"Oh, dear lord. The Iron Bitch?! You're putting her in charge?!"

Kichi grimaced as he heard a cultured female voice. "Indeed he is, and I'll thank you not to refer to me that way."

The cabinet turned to see Apsara standing in the doorway, arms folded. Wearing a trouser suit and with a thin cigar in her hand, she looked over her glasses at the Security Minister. "His Excellency has decided that I will do better as Premier than as Governor of Taishita. I will forever serve as his faithful servant." She bowed respectfully to Suun. "Your Excellency, I thank you for the opportunity to serve."

::People's Daily News evening report::

"Our top story tonight; in preparation for his upcoming coronation as Tiger King of Marimaia, His Excellency has appointed a new face to the government of our glorious nation. Apsara Supachai, the current Governor of Taishita, who is well-known for her 'zero tolerance' regime towards crime and anti-governmental insurgency, will become the new Premier upon His Excellency's ascendancy to the throne. Governor Supachai has expressed great enthusiasm at her promotion, and has vowed to meet His Excellency's high standards and expectations. Miho?"

"Thank you Honji. Governor Supachai has always been well-respected by the inhabitants of our exquisite capital; she gained a lot of public respect when she visited the areas of Taishita struck by Bonstockian missiles in the last war. She showed His Excellency around the areas, and the two assisted in food distribution while also paying their respects to survivors. She gained national recognition after her speech to the Marimaian NeoSuunist Congress, where she declared that 'we should bomb the Bonstockian swine back to the Stone Age, and then even further'. It would appear that His Excellency has made yet another wise decision in elevating the Iron Governor to the leadership."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

A few days later

"So, how's she settling in?"

Chiisu Suun was on a brief sabbatical with Tian before the impending coronation, and was holding a video conference with Kangtian Wei regarding Apsara's first few days on the job.

"Well, she's living up to her reputation. Kichi's been hiding in the Security Ministry for the past day, and Wanfa's gaining a grudging respect for her. Apparently she told him that he might be allowed to exterminate something in the near future, and we all know how happy that would make him. Oh, and she's ordered the military to sever Singapore's land routes with the Malay Peninsula; apparently she wants to starve the city into submission."

"Yes, I know. She called me to ask my permission. Although she's now the Premier, she told me that she still regards me as the ultimate authority in the nation, so she'll ask my permission before anything major. I like her."

OOC: Just to answer that question of Q-D's...North Yaman is not communist, but is run by a Council that is currently made up largely of Strainists. Also, it has been a plan of the leading Yamani strainist, Eiji Jidoshin, to resurrect the title of August Emperor in the person of Strain, president-for-life of Spyr and founder of Strainism. This would band the more traditionalist and the more Strainist in a more common nationalist bond.

-Mioka-ro-

The first snow lies gently around the ancient cherry tree, down the sacred hill with its religious and government buildings rising in traditional style and beauty and out into the streets of the bustling, crowded city. As the roads wound there way further and further from the hill the city was founded around, the buildings became more modern, the slums moved into residences, and finally to the area of Mioka-ro one could describe as 'advanced'. Rising from this center of modernity is the fortress of Yanheshi Shange, styled after the Spyran Shan-ge design, which serves as the Spearguard Command.

High up in the rising thirteen stories of concrete and cannons, a man sits, quietly watching through his window the empty military railways and the nearly dead barracks. With most of the Yamani military along the Xiaguo border, helping in the destruction that is the capital of Tord or stationed in the Ogakar plain, the Spearguard Command has only a fraction of its usual detachment of Spearguard troops. With both General T'aejo and Kwa away in Helekaru theatre, the more lowly officiers are reporting to one man, starring down his glasses at the quiet snow swept yard that extends around the tower.

A knock at the door draws Eiji's attention away from the scene, but he remains seated, his back turned from the new comer.

"Come in Councillor Zhang. I gather you have something to report?"

"Yes sir. Our plan to get the traditionalist councillors out of the country has been stalled-"

"Again?"

"Yes sir. It would seem that the proposed meetings in Oshima and Izu are not going through, atleast yet."

Eiji turned his chair to his fellow Strainist council member. The most powerful man in Yaman starred of into space, lost in his thoughts. Suddently, without acknowledging Ber Zhang, he began giving orders.

"We tried to get them away on four seperate occasions, Ber! We must finish this...now! The country needs it more than ever, with pressure coming from the civil war in Xiaguo. We must have them...dealt with."

"There is possibly another way. Eiji, if we send three, or even all four to the coming coronation of Suun, it will give us enough time to act! Before those damn priests and Houses know it, we will ahve a majority in the Council and the power of the priests will be no more. With time, the tribes and the Houses can be safely indoctrinated, but not with the priesthood a variable. We can still do this without bloodshed."

A long pause followed, and finally Eiji consented to his friend.

"Make it happen Ber. Have the Spearguard and Houseguard ready to deal with any problems in bringing the priests under the state. Contact Marimaia and tell them...that the most venerable of the Yaman High Council beg the pleasure to witness a coronation. Though not, perhaps, the one they will expect."

As Thabo left his office, he received the news about Suun's planned 'coronation'.

"Why should we care what some dictator in some god-forsaken land wants to call himself?" Thabo asked rhetorically. "He can call himself the pope if he wants, it won't change how we deal with him or how we conduct ourselves in the region."

"I guess that means you won't be attending his coronation?" The young aide asked as Thabo entered the elevator. Thabo simply glared at him while the doors closed.

MacNally was in his office reading the news. Having already memorized most of the front section he finally reached the part about Premier Suun declaring himself 'king' or something to that extent. The article wasn't very descriptive, and it was snuggled in on page 15, right beside the picture of the world's fattest person and the article about research on nose hairs.

Still, MacNally thought, if it was true, then it could have a major impact on Hudecian long term policy in the region.

Premier Supachai glared at the foreign journalists as her press conference began.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the MPIN, esteemed foreign correspondents; I stand here before you to announce that a date has been set for His Excellency's coronation as Tiger King of Marimaia. Darin Thanarat has been working tirelessly to create a new ceremony for this occasion; on behalf of the nation, I would like to thank him for his obvious dedication to His Excellency. The ceremony will be held at Ayutthaya; we are issuing invitations to all nations with whom we have diplomatic relations. We will show your representatives our renowned hospitality, and they will be permitted to stay at Ayutthaya Palace. Questions?"

She pointed to a foreign journalist. "Madame Premier, how do you justify the actions you've taken against Singapore? Is it not true that many innocent civilians will suffer?"

Apsara scowled. "What right do you have to question our actions? Were you fighting on the front line? Were you nearly killed when the enemy launched missiles against your major cities? There are terrorists in Singapore who are obstructing the stability of the region. If the people of that city are not willing to give them up, then we will starve them out. It is no less than what the enemy would do to us. Someone with an intelligent question, please! Yes, you."

"How is His Excellency feeling as we draw closer to the coronation?"

"He is a little nervous, as we all would be. However, his apprehension is slight compared to the pride and love he feels for Marimaia. He built this nation into a strong power, and now it is our turn to express our love for him by honouring him in the most impressive way we can."

With the date of the coronation not even announced, Marimaian diplomats are surprised by the sudden arrival of three Lyong priests, high ranking officials in Yaman. But before the arrival of the three priest councillors is even brought to the attention of superiors in the Marimaian government, a communication out of Mioka-ro announces that a clerical error has sent the delgation early, and that the priests would like to take this oppurtunity to visit the sacred places in this land of our great allies.

OOC: The three priests are rather confused, having been told that they would be arriving to witness a coronation. They would be very thankful to the Marimaians, but quiet. The Marimaian tourist reps smiled gleefully at the disembarking passengers, handing out leaflets and joking around. One rather harsh looking man expressed disapproval at the scantily-clad reps; he was promptly ushered away by security. All tourist information about the nation talked about the liberal public decency laws; anyone who visited the nation and complained about local customs was regarded as a public nuisance.

The airport director started asking the visitor what he was doing in the country when a phone call came through about an unexpected flight; the plane was identified as a Yamani diplomatic craft. The director rushed out of the room and began barking orders for standard diplomatic protocols to be followed.

The communique reached the first level of screening...and halted for a few minutes. The monitoring officer finished filing her nails and tapped a few buttons to send it onto the second level. Three administrators took a look at it and sent it onto the third level before going to lunch. The Vice-Deputy Foreign Minister read it over and sent it on, before remembering that the Deputy Foreign Minister was in Hudecia; he shrugged and called the DFM's secretary, who sent it on to the final screening level aka Foreign Minister Rongyi Bei. Rongyi quickly scanned it while talking to his wife on the phone about what she was going to wear to the coronation, then closed his emails to finish the conversation properly. He quickly finished the call when he realised what he'd read.

Chiisu shook his head. "I prefer 'His Excellency'. It's already used, and it's more pretentious. Oh, by the way, Darin suggested that you no longer be referred to as 'First Spouse'. He feels that 'Royal Consort' is more apt."

Tian thought about it. "His Excellency Chiisu Suun, Tiger King of Marimaia, and his Royal Consort Tian Yao. Not bad."

Rongyi Bei and his bodyguards hurtled down the walkways towards the VIP arrival lounge where the Yamani delegates would disembark to. When they finally arrived, Rongyi applauded the airport director's speed; two young children were already standing by with flowers, the red carpet had been unrolled, and a small honour guard was waiting. The director had created a slight delay in the disembarkment process to allow for preparations to be finished.

Almost as soon as Rongyi Bei arrives in the lounge, the delegation disembarks. In front are three men, all wearing the traditional robes of a Lyong priest. Coming behind are several diplomatic officials and a small group of Spearguard, dressed in their formal black uniforms and armed with traditional Heron swords.

The three men stop when they enter the lounge, bow to the Marimaians, and begin to in Marimaian. The man in the middle, an elderly priest, is between two middle aged priests. To his left, a short chubby man glances about. The last priest, scarred in the face, is the biggest man in the delegation, towering over his peers and watching the Marimaians. The eldest shows little emotional as he begins.

"I am Councillor Otojiro Yakuta-ki, Head priest of the Michinoki. With me are Councillors Shuri-lan Mora-ki"...he gestures to his left and then to his right..."and Aluri Mikio-ki, heads of the Utaki and Kaki respectively. We thank you for accepting us in spite of our early arrival."

"Darin Thanarat will be here to discuss that shortly; he estimates that we will be finished with the preparations two days before the coronation. The royal uniform has been finished, as have the robes you will wear during official state occasions."

Tian finished making Chiisu's tea and joined the conversation. "Sounds like everything's nearly done. Do I get robes?"

Kihoshi shook his head. "Afraid not. You do get a very nicely tailored silk suit though. I've seen it, there's a tiger motif and everything on it."

"Cool." Tian perched himself on the edge of Chiisu's desk. "So with Apsara now confirmed as Premier, that means that Chiisu does...what?"

Chiisu smirked. "It means that we get to relax and enjoy the lifestyle we've so justly deserved. Apsara will keep consulting me on policy decisions and I'll have the ultimate final say in everything, but our regular days are now free. All we need now is to come up with some new royal ceremonies for me to attend."

"We are pleased to meet you, Minister Bei." The old priest graciously accepts the flowers from Marimaian children and hands them to Aluri. Stepping forward, the old priest addresses the foreign minister.

"We would be most glad to reside at your Recreation Complex for our stay, and anticipate a interesting tour of our allies homeland. And feel no need to excuse your Emperor, I am certain he is quite busy. The mistake is all our own, but your early welcome of us is a testimont to the kindness of your nation."

The Yamani delegates are led to a waiting limousine; their luggage and companions are distributed among several smaller vehicles before the small convoy pulls off. As they proceed through Taishita towards the Recreation Complex (a large state-run luxury hotel/spa used only by the elites and distinguished foreign guests), Rongyi points out various monuments while giving a short history of the capital.

They soon arrive at the Complex, a gleaming well-maintained cluster of buildings on the outskirts of the city. Uniformed staff carry the delegates' luggage up to their assigned palatial quarters while Rongyi deals with the check-in. The quarters consist of six rooms: four bedrooms; a large bathroom w/ jacuzzi, shower and bath; and an impressive lounge complete with entertainment centres and minibars. A balcony allows the guests to view the rest of the complex; tennis courts, swimming pools, and various other recreational sites are part of the complex. Rongyi smiles politely as he shows the Yamani how to request assistance.

"You simply go to the touchscreen and press 'service'. A porter will come to your room and then you ask for whatever you wish. If you need to contact the Foreign Ministry, simply call the front desk and they will put you through to us. The Ministry for Culture and the Arts has been putting your tour together, and they will be ready to show you around whenever you desire. Have a pleasant stay, and do enjoy yourselves."

Rongyi and his staff leave the Yamani to settle in; news of the French delegation's arrival soon reaches Rongyi, who returns to the Foreign Ministry in order to prepare for any further arrivals.

Ayutthaya, Marimaia

"Well that was unexpected."

Kihoshi nodded. "Agreed. Still, it's nice to have recognition from Europe. Particularly the new French regime, as they appear to be quite similar to us in several ways."

Chiisu sighed as he continued to look over the new proposal from Darin Thanarat. "I'm all for being King, but he wants me to become dharmaraja as well. I'd be able to legislate on Theravadan matters and oversee the sangha (OOC: priesthood). I don't know if I want that kind of religious authority."

"Well, apparently the Siamese kings used to have that authority; the junta in Myanmar used to claim it as well. The only problem with assuming it is that the Muslims and the other faiths may be put off by a formerly secular Premier becoming the head of Marimaia's most prominent and widespread religion." Tian sat next to Chiisu before continuing. "We'd need to placate the other faiths, make them understand that although you're becoming a Buddhist authority they are still free to continue their own ways of life."

Chiisu groaned. "Things were simpler under my father's rule. Everyone was oppressed, so no-one had special treatment. I, on the other hand, have to balance everyone's feelings. Perhaps we could create a religious advisory council; the leading voices in each of Marimaia's resident faiths could advise me on how to respect everyone's beliefs while remaining King. Plus there's the slight problem of me not being Buddhist; Darin's very charismatic, but could he convince the Theravadans that the head of an officially atheist government is qualified to decree the direction of their faith?"

Tian shrugged. "Who's to say that you're not Buddhist? We've never disclosed your religious tendencies; perhaps you could be a closet Theravadan. I checked into it; if we go by Darin's interpretations, we wouldn't be breaking any Theravadan laws if we converted and then carried on as normal. We'd be Buddhists in name only, but I think symbolism is more important than day-to-day reality here."

::People's Daily News evening bulletin::

"Our top story tonight: in a news conference earlier today, His Excellency Chiisu Suun announced the creation of a 'religious advisory council', which will provide expertise and advice to His Excellency on faith-based matters. All of Marimaia's major faiths will be represented, including Islam, Christianity, and of course Theravadan Buddhism. His Excellency hopes that the council will enable him to better serve the people in his capacity as King. Miho?"

"Thanks Honji. His Excellency also stated that the NeoSuunist government was going to finally do away with the anachronistic stance on religion by bringing religious leaders into discussions concerning their local areas; while Mikada Suun's regime harassed religious groups, Chiisu Suun is embracing them as part of Marimaia's cultural heritage. In a reform of the old laws, religious freedom will become guaranteed. However, he has stated that the government will not be recognising any one religion as Marimaia's official faith; the government will remain secular, as to ensure that no faith is promoted above the others."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Darin Thanarat was somewhat overjoyed to hear that Chiisu Suun was accepting the mantle of Dharmaraja; however, Suun put conditions on this. Chiisu refused to accept control of the sangha, wishing only to accept the title as it meant 'Righteous King'. Thanarat was told that he will become Patriarch as soon as Chiisu is coronated; this way, Thanarat becomes the official head of the Theravadan priesthood, while Chiisu retains the power to dismiss him. Thanarat will then control the sangha and legislate on Theravadan matters on Suun's behalf, while the NeoSuunists gain influence over their nation's largest religion.

The coronation plans soon drew in other faiths as they lined up to honour Suun in the manner that the Buddhists were planning. Fahad bin Khalid, a young and slightly unorthodox Muslim cleric, announced that he wanted to grant Suun the blessing of the Muslim community; slowly but surely, other religious leaders jumped on the bandwagon as an opportunity to show their support for the NeoSuunist regime.

(OOC: No probs; I just thought that interest had died. On with the show...)

IC:

Culture Minister Kuan Yin arrives at the complex to greet the Yamani priests and take them on the planned tour. He starts off by giving a brief history lesson, detailing how a period of famine and economic instability flared up due to mismanagement by the last democratic government; he describes the civil war which followed, a war which saw the victory of the Suunists and the rise of the Suunist People's Republic. Minister Yin then discusses the rise of Chiisu Suun, the adoption of NeoSuunism and the upcoming coronation.

The first day of the tour is taken up by a tour of Taishita, Marimaia's capital city. The priests are shown the ongoing construction of the new government buildings before visiting various museums. The priests were shown artifacts from before the formation of Marimaia; Minister Yin spoke of the kingdoms that existed in the region centuries before Marimaia, describing how the upcoming coronation would be a revival of centuries-old traditions and would grant His Excellency the prestige that everyone in Marimaia believes he deserves.

The Yamani priests are escorted back to their quarters at the end of the day; the plan is to take them to the restored Angkor Wat the next day, with the third and final day of the tour involving a trip to Ayutthaya and a meeting with His Excellency.

"I get how many titles?"

Tian checked the list again. "Seven."

"Seven?"

"Seven. We've definitely confirmed 'Tiger King, Father of The Nation, Lord of the Lands, Soul of The Nation, Tiger Generalissimo, Dharmaraja and Devaraja'. Those are your royal titles. Your normal titles are 'Chairman of the Marimaian NeoSuunist Party, Doyen of NeoSuunism, and Hero of Marimaia'. So you'll officially have ten titles after 'His Excellency Chiisu Suun'. And so it happened that Monarch One landed in Taishita International Airport, closely followed by its escort of Ordu du Saint-Espirit Dassualt Rafales.

There was no publicity as His Most Christian Majesty disembarked his plane of state, as he was not in court attire. This, indeed, revealed much of Louis the mans character. He had come to Marimaia for trade talks, yes, and cordialities. But Srichpan had been so vivid in his discription of the tropical country, Louis and his Queen simply wore white suits and slacks, with little Fleur-de-lis pins, and even donned sunglasses---something unthinkable in the rigid formality and pomp of Versailles.

Louis grinned as he stepped onto the tarmack, the warm weather and humidity a welcome contrast from now cold France.

Gifts of gold and portraiture were of course brought for His Excellency Chiisu Suun and his charming consort. Louis was sorry he would not be able to stay for the coronation (in light of the developing events in Lavrageria) but he would show his best wishes nevertheless.

He was most anxious to go scuba diving with His Excellency and the consort in Marimaias warm blue oceans, and he truly enjoyed volleyball (by watching).

His Most Christian Majesty, surrounded by his spledidly uniformed Swiss Bodyguards, embarked via limo to Chiisu's Palace...expected soon after Louis arrival was the Tsars. Therefore, His Most Christian King wanted to get in some sun and swimming before the important trade discussions began.

As the royal limousine made its way up the long driveway towards Ayutthaya Palace, several members of the elite NeoSuun Guard took up position flanking the main steps; as the limousine pulled up, Chiisu's butler Michio approached. As Louis and the Queen stepped out, Michio bowed.

"Your Most Christian Majesty; please allow me to welcome you, your beautiful Queen and your entourage to Ayutthaya. His Excellency has been full of anticipation about your arrival; all he has been talking about is how honoured we are to host you."

With typical Marimaian efficiency, Tian Yao emerged from the palace just as Michio finished talking. Tian was clad in a stylish shirt-and-trousers combination, not too formal but not overly casual either. He calmly made his way down to Louis, a slight smile on his normally impassive face.

"It is a pleasure to finally meet you, Your Most Christian Majesty. I am Tian Yao, Royal Consort of His Excellency Chiisu Suun. If you would like to follow me, His Excellency is waiting."

Tian led Louis and his entourage into the palace, showing them various antiquities and paintings as they made their way towards the main lounge. They eventually reached a pair of large doors; Tian swung them open and entered. A squeal of delight was clearly audible before Tian opened the doors again.

"His Excellency will see you now."

In the centre of the richly decorated lounge stood the young ruler of Marimaia, grinning broadly. Not known for his formality, Chiisu was wearing a white short-sleeved shirt, a pair of tan shorts and a pair of white flip-flops. He opened his arms and laughed.

"Louis! Louis Louis Louis! At last we meet! I'm still new to the whole royalty game, so can you tell me if a hug between monarchs is acceptable?"

"I dont see why not, it is only right that friends should hug" said Louis, with a smile and gave Chiisu a clap on the back. Marie-Therese curtsied, and purred "Your Excellency, thank you for such warm hospitality."

With that, all were seated, Marie lit Louis cigarette, and His Most Chrisitan King reclined in his chair. "What fine weather, mon ami! Mon Dieu, I must visit more often!" Taking a drag of the royal cigarette, he was handed a glass of ice cold champagnie. "Your ambassidors actions in Versailles do you honor Chiisu. I have been eagerly waiting my journey here. I hope we can get to the beach before long, I would enjoy relaxing before those damned photo ops." He snapped his fingers, an his ambassidor in Marimaia, Le Baron de Thiebault, handed him a packet papers.

"Chiisu, these are my trade purposals for the Tripartite Pact. I am sure the arrangements will be mutually beneficial for us both. My realm requires rubber, oil, and timber. These are commodities I have been assured you shall be able to supply. In return, my domains are capable of building your technological sector, economically of course..."

"Indeed, I should not hesisate to provide you will military equipment, satellites, guidance systems and the like. Among our lands, as well as our mutual friends and my brother the Tsars, there will exist a unique trade status-which is to say duty free, if you will. It will make us all tremendously rich." He puffed away, his wife availing herself of a cigarette as well."

"That said, congratulations on your forthcoming coronation. I have brought gifts to enhance it." Porters came bearing portraits, golden objects, and luxury items that only Paris could provide. "But enough of state business, it would be a royal shame" he smirked "for us to waste such fine weather!"

Marie-Therese chimed in "So true, Chiisu, may we adjourn to the ocean?" She finsihed her Champagnie, and put out her cigarette.

Chiisu grinned. "We'll take a helicopter to Fuishiban Island; it's my holiday resort, and one of the most secure places in Marimaia. The diving and fishing is exquisite. Then we'll make our way to Yutu Yinchon for the Volleyball Championship. Shall we?"

After the two monarchs and their entourages were bundled onto Marimaia Two (a luxury converted Mi-26 HALO), Chiisu addressed Louis's offer.

"The trade arrangements should be simple to finalise. Although Marimaia's tech sector is one of the finest in Asia, we see no harm in making it one of the finest in the world. This alliance couldn't have come at a better time; we're currently rebuilding our military after the Bonstock War, and here you come offering new high-tech hardware. I can see France and the Estenlands becoming vital friends of ours. Anyway, enough talk; we're nearly there."

Marimaia Two and its Hind escorts arrived at Fuishiban, a gleaming tropical island with various buildings dotted around. Tian smiled at Louis and Marie-Therese.

"We have scuba, fishing, surfing, shopping, massage, and things that shouldn't really be discussed in polite society. An island fit for two kings."

Of course, he was a devout Christian, so he would accept no added 'perks' (besides, he had mistresses enough back in Versailles). The King gave his assent to the trade agreements, entrusting Thiebault to carry out his wishes.

With the day spent in relaxation His Most Christian Majesty was ready for the Volleyball tournament, for which he was dressed in his official Court attire, wig, ensemble, and all. He wondered where his brother in law was, but wasted no time in preparing for the Marimaian/French photo oppurtunities.

The Estenlands
19-12-2004, 01:55
The following day, Tsar Wingert I of The Estenlands landed in Marimaia in order to join in the talks. He emerged from the same nondescript military transport plane not dressed in his traditional full golden arnour, sporting his six-foot braodsword, but on the advise of his ally Louis XX, who really was better at this diplomacy thing anyways, he showed up in a Parisian made overpriced suit that bulged over his seven foot, over 300 pound frame. His trademark glare, peering out over his wild beard destroyed the cultured effect that Louis tried to make with the $3000 suit, making him look like, a barbarian that was trying to come to the big city and fit in. His massive, barrel-chest was covered in medals and a gold sash that was adorned with the imperial symbol of his royal family.

He emerged into the hot, hot sun and looked around at the many people coming forward to attend to him. He was used to being the tallest man in the room, but this was ridiculous. "they say I am a tyrant, they must not even feed the people here, we really should teach them how to make Perogies and Borscht Soup, and how would they be of any help with those tiny frail bodies in the business of war?" He was saying this to the newly posted ambassador to Marimaia, Baron Boris Kristoff, who gained this post based on the fcat that he was trained as a linguist, specialising in Asian languages, and was extensively travelled in this area.

Baron Kristoff stood six-feet tall and was heavily muscled, though among the Estenlandian nobility he seemed lean and sinewy. He was a trained martial artist, having mastered four or five Asian martial arts, and carried a Japanese-style wakasashi on his back. He stood with his bracered arms crossed across his armoured breastplate as he peered across the tarmac.

Baron Kristoff was completely bald, with a pockmarked sereies of scars that stretches across his cheek, leftovers from the revolution in the Estenlands, when a tank shell had exploded too near. He had spent the revolution training special ops in hand-to-hand, and enjoyed the distinction of having performed in more assassinations of Russian personel than any other Estenlander. It would be his job to set up the embassy and maintain relations with this little-understood ally of his Tsars.

King Louis learned of the arrival of his brother in law the Tsar seconds after he had landed, and suggested to His Excellency that he should be invited to join them before the volleyball game. "Could it possibly be delayed, so that we may relax and enjoy further photo oppurtunities? I am sure my brother would love a chance to relax, Estenlands is very cold this time of year." Louis asked cordially.

As a matter of fact, His Most Chrisitan Majesty was so enthused at his stay in Marimaia he extended his tour for an extra day. Needless to say, Marie was ecstatic. This would give the Royal couple a chance to scuba dive!

The trade accords went better than Louis could have dreamed, and he was heartened mightily to find such a friend in Chiisu Suun. He, on the spur of inspiration and champagnie, invited Chiisu to visit Versailles, hinting a whole series of Asian themed mask balls would be thrown if such an invitation were to be accepted.

19-12-2004, 20:18
As always, Chiisu's word carried more weight in Marimaia than any law or schedule; the Volleyball Championship was temporarily halted 'in a show of respect to His Excellency and his desire to attend'. The delay also allowed Premier Apsara Supachai to arrive in Fuishiban; as head of government, her presence at any treaty signings would be desirable.

Chiisu was loving all the attention from Europe; after seeing how Louis carried himself, he began to realise that becoming Tiger King could be far more enjoyable than he'd first imagined. Tian was intrigued by the way these Europeans acted so carefree compared to Marimaia's Asian allies, and wanted to see if the Tsar was as relaxed as Louis; he didn't hold out much hope for that though, as the Tsar's reputation was spreading to Marimaia.

Chiisu eagerly agreed to visit Versailles at some point; after all, Louis had visited him, and it was only fair to return the honour.

If it wasn't for the infinately more interesting things going on in Hindustan, i.e. a big concert, the government would probably take a much more active interest in the proceedings in Marimaia. While always keeping close tabs on human rights issues and other 'more pressing' problems, coronations just do not rouse that much interest, especially when there is a venue featuring David Byrne just a short walk outside the the government buildings.

But despite all this, an An-26 soon finds itself plodding across the Bay of Bengal, carrying the annoyed minister of Agriculture, an accomplished Botanist and Sitar player. Unlike many other ministers of Agriculture, he really knows what it is all about, having grown up on a wheat plantation.

But what the coronation of Premier Sunn had to do with agriculture, or good music, is beyond Utpal Nehru's comprehension.

Furthermore, the Eastern Crisis dicatated that he must soon return to France itself, to firmly take the reigns of government.

He, Marie, Chiisu and the Excellencies entourage had one final dinner together, on that lush island, the food prepared by Louis personal chef...needless to say, the food was excellent.

Hey, don't blame me. That old popular congress, you never do know what's passed around during its sessions.

IC:

Unlike Premier Sunn's other guests, Minister Nehru is not especially prestegiousoutside of Hindustan. The only thing that he is expected to take the reigns of is the national agricultural system, not a faculty of government especially important to western leaders.

Perhaps the fact that the Prime Minister of Hindustan is essentially just some person who has the good fortune to be awarded with the position, and is set for life with their own Pagoda and a nigh-bottomless supply of opium is why one never sees him in diplomatic settings, and minor ministers are always sent out to do the country's bidding.

Nehru comes off the aircraft dressed in a loose-fitting powder blue overshirt, embroidered with various designs from this and that, and a pair of matching powder-blue pants. High-quality sandals provide footwear, and a good deal of his dress could be considered quite ornate.

Though we are trying everything in our power to stop this conflict, it seems as though our neighbours to the north are bent on war, sending 3000 cannibalistic raiding nomads to attack our women and children in their own homes! We have asked for negotiations, and that has met with silence! This coupled with the fact that the violent dictator, Putin of Russia, is threatening the sovereign nation of Estenlands with invasion for the crime of defending itself! I know that the Tiger King has claws, and should His Majesty decide to intervene, the enemies of the Tripartite would indeed tremble, but it is understood that you have no obligations in this regard. Thank you and God Bless!

The Central Directorature, Da’Khiem, The Choson People’s Republic

Comrade Director Secretary Hotan let out a, “Hmph.” And cast the South Korean newspaper down on the bullet-riddled desk before him, knocking a new silver letter opener from its stand. Its more infamous predecessor was now on display at the Kurosite shrine that had sprung up in Seoul, still stained with the blood of one amongst three of Hotan’s felled would-be assassins, a testament to Kuroiste bravery and foreign terrorism.

The paper contained what Hotan expected of it, but he still failed to appreciate the hostile tone in which the allegations were made against his diplomatic corps. Sure, they were smuggling Marimaian drugs in their diplomatic pouches, but they were perfectly good opiates, not, “filthy drugs” as this hack maintained!

Still, the story was out, now. Not so much in the CPRD, but out there in the beyond.

The NeoSuunist Prosperity Sphere of Marimaia

Comrade Wónsul’s car arrived at the French embassy barely minutes after communiqué confirmed the resident ambassador’s presence. The Drapoel ambassador to Marimaia had no interest in whether his European counterpart was busy, the Choson People’s Republic would say its piece and be heard.

Wónsul exited the South Korean-built vehicle –captured during the liberation of Seoul and transferred abroad for diplomatic duty- and cut a very Drapoel figure. He was almost 5’6”, clad in fairly simple military-like uniform, and most of his head was shaved. He wore an extremely long plait from the back of his head, and at its end there hung a hefty ornament. Under his arm he clutched a diplomatic pouch made of a reasonably tough if slightly combustible paper-based fabric. The pouch had around its lower edge a small metal rim that gave it some structural integrity and protected it against wear when placed down. As the ambassador approached the front door to the embassy he could be seen thrusting a thin fold of papers into the legally protected vessel, where they would rest upon a number of plastic bags containing an off-white substance. Wónsul had been in a great hurry to reach the French embassy following Da’Khiem’s report on French provocation and slander.

Some way off, a second Drapoel comrade, a young woman of little repute, observed what she could of the embassy though a small pair of field glasses as she sat alone on top of a uniquely Drapoel frequency-hopping secure radio.

(OOC: Sorry to butt in. I have to respond somewhere to French actions in contrast to Drapoel interests, and judged that Marimaia would probably be the most obvious land in which both parties have a diplomatic presence.)

OOC: Thank you for that idea, Estenlands (if that is your real name...only kidding). I was going to give Suun a personal black ops team as a coronation goody, but I couldn't come up with a decent name. Now though....just call them the Tiger's Claws. That really has a nice ring to it, thank you again.

D-P, feel free to work in any discussion you have with France; if it's in this thread then I'll know where to look for it (Marimaia is allied to both France and Dra-pol, so it's something I should watch).

Anyhoo, today is Christmas Day! So I'm coronating him. We'll say that the coronation took place before the meeting between D-P and France, as both ambassadors would be invited.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ayutthaya, Marimaia

The Grand Hall was bustling with activity as the guests finished taking their seats. The guest list was varied to say the least; cabinet members, military commanders, foreign ambassadors, special foreign guests, civil servants, Concern executives and even one or two crime bosses sat around in their most formal attire, waiting for the ceremony.

Premier Supachai stood next to the magnificent golden throne, alongside Darin Thanarat and the other religious leaders who were to bless Suun as the new king. Members of the NeoSuun Guard lined the hall and flanked the doorways, all clad in their new red and gold dress uniform. The hall fell silent as Suun's secretary Kihoshi entered, escorted by Suun's four Yakuza-donated bodyguards. The five of them took their seats in the front row, next to the cabinet and Suun's 12 year-old half-brother Mengkuai (OOC: Mengkuai doesn't appear much, but I figured they'd bring him along for this).

The chatter started up again, but was cut short with the arrival of the First Couple. Chiisu and Tian slowly walked towards the throne to the sound of the royal fanfare; Tian in his new red and gold silk suit while Chiisu wore the newly created royal robes, a flowing red, white and gold outfit detailed with script from the robes of ancient Southeast Asian kings. Tian bowed deeply as Chiisu took his place on the throne, and then the ceremony began.

The religious leaders took turns to bless Suun, calling on their respective deities to grant Suun the greatness and authority which he so richly deserved. Premier Supachai then paid tribute to Suun in a speech cataloguing his various accomplishments and successes, calling him the greatest leader Marimaia ever had and would ever have. After about an hour of complimentary speechs, Darin Thanarat stood before Chiisu and raised the crown above his head.

"I hereby crown this most auspicious individual! May his reign be prosperous; may his nation and his people blossom under his benevolent rule! All hail the Tiger King!"

Chiisu stood, allowing Thanarat to place the crown upon his head. Tian then dropped to one knee and bowed, followed by the rest of those in attendance. After a few moments, Chiisu ordered them to stand before addressing them.

"Distinguished guests and friends, you lighten my heart with this honour you have granted me. This is truly an expression of love, that you would crown me as your king. I wish you to know that I love you all as much as you love me; I shall not fail you as your king."

The royal fanfare was performed a second time before the national anthem began; as the guests performed a rousing rendition of 'I Want A New World', Chiisu and Tian slowly made their way towards the exit, nodding and smiling to the dignitaries who applauded their new monarch.

OOC- I thought I should post this so that you know who to talk to for diplomatic relations in between our nations.

IC-When King Wingert I had dropped in on his state visit to Marimaia he dropped off the first ambassador ever from Estenlands to Southern Asia. The man put in charge of setting up this embassy was given a large amount of funds in order to set up relationships and begin to stimulate trade between the nations, he is authorised to use 2 billion dollars in order to do so, making local investments, buying mines and factories as well as investing in shipping and import/export concerns in Marimaia in order to begin shaping the business relationships that will grow over the next several years between these two distant nations.

The ambassador was a fairly short, for Estenlandian nobility. He stood only 5’10” tall but still had the bulk that belied his heritage, weighing in at a trim 220lbs. He gained this posting and the prestige and power that come with it on the strength of his linguistic skills, having travelled extensively in Southeast Asia throughout his life, mastering almost a dozen Asian languages, from Punjab to Mandarin to Marimaian. He also spent his childhood mastering five martial arts in this region, ranging from Okinawan Kempo Karate to Tsuin Shien Style Gung Fu. This leads him to completely shave his head and grow an Asian style goatee. He also dresses completely in black at all times, but wears a shining silvered-steel western style armoured breastplate, with matching bracers around his considerable forearms. He also keeps a Katana strapped to his back, a gift from a Japanese Master, and a loaded 9mm sidearm strapped to his hip/leg.

He is a severe, but very intelligent man that bears a rough, sandpaper-like scar across his right cheek, a souvenir from a tank shell that exploded a little too close during the revolution from Russia, in which he trained Special Forces Units in hand-to-hand and silent killing techniques and holds the dubious distinction of commanding more assassinations taken place on Russian soil than any other member of the revolutionary armies.

He is of lower ability, his distinction being all about ability, and though he would always find himself useful in the Estenlandian military, he was unable to achieve any major administrative success due to his limited noble heritage, so has spent the last two decades since the revolution looking for his opportunity to make his fortune. Now, with a diplomatic post that is given second highest priority by the King, second only to France, with 2 billion dollars to invest in this nation, with more to come every year and connections to make throughout this region, this may be his only opportunity, and he takes that very seriously. His name, Baron Boris Krushchevin.

Nehru finds Yuan's presentation very informative, or at least he gives the impression of interest, and asks for literature on Neo-Sunnism to be published in Hindustan, who's relaxed youth would almost certainly not take up the call of revolution when there were better things to do, happier things, like playing the sitar and studying the sciences, the major course of the Hindustani educational system.

Hindustani troops in Korea number in the low hundreds by now, but probably will not decrease from their current size (around 200) in the forseeable future. With Quinntonians taking over the positions formerly held by the large armored force deployed to repel the UPA, ol' Hindustan could safely withdraw from the theater without much trouble.

At the coronation, Nehru watches as Sunn is given his new position, and is part of the standing ovation that bombards Sunn and Tian as they walk towards the exit. Uptal, not exactly a tall or impressively-built man, is probably not visible from the couple, hidden by a front row of taller dignitaries. His relatively informal dress, consisting of a pair of shorts and a Grateful Dead T-Shirt, after he changed out of his more traditional costume, might distinguish him, however.

Ten crates of fine opium and cannabids, the cannabids part of the agriculture ministriy's carefully-grown and lovingly handled test crops, wait for Sunn in a painted and ornamented lorry outside, the first box draped with exquisitely-embroidered cloths and plenty of bronze ornamentation. A driver dressed in traditional Indian pomp-and-circumstance clothing, very baggy with plenty of embroidery and color, and a sitarist, sit in the lorry, along with four retainers.

Suun is greatly appreciative of the Hindustani gift, and instructs the Ministry of Information to prepare copies of all major NeoSuunist works for Nehru to take back with him. Preparations are also made to send some Marimaian opium to Hindustan as a test to see if the Marimaian brand has any sales potential.

Talks are also started concerning a possible Hindustani tour by Sakano, Marimaia's iconic pop band and the artists responsible for Marimaia's national anthem.

Any tour by pretty much any band of Hindustan would probably be approved without any fuss or anything, and Hindustan welcomes musicians with open arms, but it is advised, considering the state of affairs in Asia, that the band postpone its tour until things have quieted down.

A benefit concert for fighting AIDS in Africa had concluded about a week ago, and was an extremely successful venue, raising millions of dollars. While David Byrne was the main attraction, Ravi Shankar, the Hindustani Prime Minister, Sting, Ali Farka Toure, Taj Mahal, Buddy Guy, Youssu N'Doure, Leon Russell, David Bowie, Eric Clapton, U2, and George Harrison, as well as a wide variety of local Reggae and Skaa bands, made notable appearances.

Baron de Thiebault would go to the Marimaia General Staff, on recomendation by the Tiger King, and offer to sell them the Sacre-2 Satellite as well was 15 Fury V Long Range Missles (guided by the satellite, which functions in a espionage/tactical capacity).

As the Baron had purposed to the Tiger King, His Most Christian Majesty Louis XX was offering them the satellite (launch from French Guiana included) and the accompanied missles for 100,000 Louis d'or---9.1 billion dollars.

It was an awesome set of military hardware, indeed the finest high tech weapons in Frances arsenal. A symbol of the enduring Tripartite Pact. Already, France was trading heavily with Marimaia. The Kingdom of France provided finished products in return for raw materials (foremost oil, then rubber, timbers and ores). French ships daily made harbor in Taishita, and the economic links were becoming apparent in both countries.

The deal would give Marimaia an unriveled advantage in satellite technology in South Asia, and kick its military up a few notches.

On a side note, Baron Thiebault expressed to the Marimaian State Departments his reservations about Marimaias close relationship with Hindustan. In the past, Hindustan had harshly criticized French policy, and some believed was in cahoots with the Lavrageria Socialist Government, although it was pure speculation. The Baron would be very firm in his belief that any Marimaian/Hindustani allainces would only complicate the lucrative balance of the Tripartite pact.

News of the French gift to Marimaia causes a little bit of a stir in the Hindustani government. After all, India is not exactly on France's good side, and any indication that France would somehow be able to strike the very heart of the nation itself by conventional means does not sit well with the military establishment.

Hopefully, the small but well-equipped military would, with its S-200 MOD ABM systems and Akash SAMs, be able to shoot down ballistic missiles and cruise missiles fired against the Indian Subcontinent.

But it isn't as if the French will just get up and drop a nuclear bomb on Hindustan. After all, such a course of action would no doubt not sit well with Beth Gellert. And after all, they certainly appeared to like war.

Central Command graciously accepts the French offer, seeing nothing wrong with strengthening Marimaia's military capabilities.

However, the Foreign Ministry is uncharacteristically blunt in their reply to Thiebault's concerns regarding Hindustan. Foreign Minister Rongyi Bei informs the Baron that it is none of France's business if Marimaia chooses to engage in diplomatic relations with Hindustan; Rongyi also hints that France is not showing Marimaia a great deal of trust. The Baron is told in no uncertain terms that Hindustan figures greatly in Marimaia's regional policies, and that Marimaia will talk to any nation it desires to. Thiebault is also advised to talk to the Hindustani ambassador to resolve the current spat.

Hudecia took notice of the French sale to Marimaia and began to worry a little bit more about the expanding influence of Marimaia.

With Myanmar and Malaysia all but Marimaian satellite states, Sulawesi out of Hudecian control and Java under Spyr control, the Hudecian government convened an emergency cabinet session to decide on an appropriate response.

The Baron studied the Foreign Minister as his own face went beet red.

"Not showing enough trust? How can you assume that the state which sells you such a military weapon is not showing trust. What rubbush. Very well, you know your own business."

"However, such remarks show that your nation does not seem to be ready for a military alliance with my Sovereign. As such, the satellite sale is called off. I apologize for burdening your nation with such an item."

The Baron sighed. "As for our own relations with Hindustan, well, we are sick of their intoxicated escapades. And we shall thank you never to remind His Most Christian Majesty what his actions should be."

"That said, the Kingdom of France is very sorry for making such a callous offer. We look forward to many years of economic friendship and amiability."

With that, the Baron left, and resumed his residence in the Embassy. In the limo he thought the Hudecians would no doubt be pleased. Underneath the denial of the sale, a subvert apology was being sent to Frances friend Hudecia for the in hindsight mistaken venture.

"He said what?!"

"Those were his exact words, Your Excellency. Apparently we aren't suitable for an alliance with them because we took offense at them questioning our foreign policy. They've pulled the sale of the satellite in protest, yet they seem to think that we'll just take it lying down and continue trading with them. Oh, and apparently they're allowed to question our policies, but we aren't allowed to question theirs."

Suun laughed at Rongyi's report. "Kindly inform Thiebault that the Tiger King of Marimaia would like to see him. As soon as possible. I have a feeling that France is a tad prejudiced. The Estenlands had a wedding, Hudecia had a wedding, but we weren't even offered a wedding. We obviously aren't that important to them; Louis cements his alliances and friendships with marriages, but we weren't considered for one. We obviously aren't friends or allies, we are nothing more than a resource area. If Thiebault gives the wrong answers to my questions, he will be thrown out. We'll then consider what to do with the Estenlands' ambassador. Oh, and let Phanum know that he may have to come home, but reassure him that it is by no means his fault."

For MacNally and the Hudecian government, although they may seem outwardly very detached and noncommital on the entire series of events, inside they couldn't be more pleased.

The sale of the missile technology to Marimaia would have posed a serious challenge to Hudecian interests in the area at a time when things were tight for the military. However, after a lengthy discussion cabinet had decided that the best action was inaction in this situation. Mostly because nothing Hudecia could have done would improve the situation at all.

Hudecia had developed an adversarial type view of Marimaia lately. Marimaia had also topped Drapol in terms of security threats, which was fading from the international scene. And in a way, Marimaian support for Drapol was seen as a key element in the crisis (although not the only element).

Hudecia's reply to France was a deeply thought out one.

Dear friend,

The external policies of your nation greatly interest us, however, we feel that our input in your affairs should only be that of a gentle suggestion, like that which a friend makes to someone they care about.

In bearing with that, we hope that you would take into consideration our suggestion. Hot heads make for poor judgement and a short temper endangers sound reason. Be kind and gentle but firm with Marimaia as they may have allowed their emotions to cloud their judgement for the moment.

In the time being, until Marimaia has realized it's mistakes, you should remain close by to be ready to accept their apology. The government of Borneo has graciously offered to open its borders to French companies and diplomats should Marimaia decide to take action against you economically.

By the way, I understand that the Premier of Quebec and your niece are hitting it off extremely well.

Merci beaucoup et bon chance.

"Your Excellency. War has come to Lavrageria, and Hindustan wantonly criticizes us (we cannot be sure if subverting yet). In this light, we make an offer to your nation which would have brung your military capacities up quite a bit."

"Trust you ask for, yet instead of allowing for a period of economic stability which ought to have displayed both sides good will, I have been told you may ask me to leave if you are not satisfied. I can do no more. These are my Kings terms: economic friendship for a while, to see what may develop in a positive manner, perhaps one day a bona fide marriage. If you reject those, I am at a loss to suggest anything."

"We can no longer offer to sell you the weapon, it was outrightly premature. Yet Louis XX expressed to me his desire to work such relationships out, as he enjoyed his time here."

At the news of this little faux paus, the ambassador to Marimaia from Estenlands moves quickly to smooth over any problems that might arise between their two nations.

In light of the recent developments. two letters are sent, one, to the French ambassador, requesting that the weapon deal go through as planned, reminding Louis that the alliance between France and Marimaia is at its heart a military one, and it would reflect badly upon all western monarchies to our eastern brothers if the deal should so rudely be cut off. Not that the humble ambassador would diegn to advise the one whose blood flows richly with the vitae of the Sun King; nevertheless it is the reponsibility of this ambassador to remind His Majesty's government of the vital importance of this powerful and wise ally in this ally. And an ally that can, if the need arose, sway Hindustan diplomatically cannot be overstated.

The second letter, inquires as to the male hiers to the Marimaian throne, and reminding the Tiger King that Tsar Wingert still has one daughter that is looking to wed a suitable suitor, and the spirit shown by the Tiger shows that the Wingert family and yours shares "the same stripes" so to speak.

Chiisu is rather taken aback by the Estenlands letter; he replies that while he and Tian aren't exactly likely to produce any male heirs anytime soon, the closest thing to a male heir that he has would be his Minister for Economic Affairs. Kangtian Wei's father was economics minister to Chiisu's father, making them a form of dynasty (not very traditional, but it still counts...somewhat); Kangtian is understood to be the chosen successor should both Chiisu and Tian 'leave the throne'.

Chiisu explains that Kangtian is currently single, and that he will mention the subject as soon as possible.

(OOC: Elkazor, shall we say that the meeting between the Baron and the Tiger King ended with lukewarm feelings? That way, Estenlands' letters fit in nicely.

Finally, ::shakes fist at Hudecia:: We're developing a nice little rivalry.)
Beth Gellert
04-01-2005, 22:37
The Igovian Soviet Commonwealth had displayed absolutely no interest in the regal affairs of Marimaia, maintaining no official respect for such traditions and systems as had only years ago been bloodily overthrown in Beth Gellert. That didn't simply mean that no gushing congratulations or stately communiqués had been sent to the Tiger King, but inversely that no negative reaction had been manifest. The Commonwealth simply viewed the Marimaian political scene as less advanced than the Igovian, which meant nothing much, as the economy, industrial capacity, and military of the nation three times smaller than Beth Gellert were seen in similar light. The social aspect at least was much closer to the Igovian sense of the modern than was true in France even before its condemnable restoration had sent the nation back centuries.

Increasing public disgust with the recovering monarchies of Europe, with their abject immorality, inhuman brutality, and uncivilised aggression forced Portmeirion to address their meddling in Asia. The Commonwealth's many diplomats in South East Asia, in typically boisterous Beddgelen fashion, were absolutely failing to disguise Igovian disapproval of the French dictatorship, and took every opportunity to mock the royal court's childish -and highly dangerous- sensitivity. That was not to mention the drunken talk of old French imperialism and how it was only prevented by primitive democratic pressure, a fact now obliterated by the destruction of the republic.

More to the point, with the world's fastest growing economy, Beth Gellert had room to increase its trade with Marimaia, one of its closest 'big' neighbours. But of course, it didn't suit the Igovian revolution to pour too much of its unrivaled economic, industrial, and technical prowess into a society that may become tied to the instable, erratic, and hostile French...

Comrade Graeme Igo, high on Marimaian opiates and interrupting a reasonably important exchange between CPCS comrades at the Green Tower, told his friends, "Not to worry, mates, the French economy isnt' 20% of our own, and is half a world away. 's not Europe that strangles the global economy today, no matter what that flour-headed ponce may wish. Shut them out, shut them out, we will have it all our way!"

Le Baron de Thiebault got a berating phone call from His Most Christian Majesty, denouncing his rude actions.

"You dared to speak to a fellow Royal, and my friend, in such a manner!" Louis was shocked in the Barons lack of protocol (hopefully the Baron had not been using any 'exotic' Hindustani horticulture). The Baron was not relieved of his duties, although the harranging would destroy his wifes posistion at Court, punishment in Louis opinion enough.

That very night, after the Baron had finished speaking with His Excellency, Chiisu would get a phone call from Queen Marie Therese herself.

"My dear Chiisu, we are so sorry for this whole fiasco. You cannot imagine the stress, especially with the ongoing liberation of Lavrageria, this has caused my dear husband. Yet he wishes to make complete amends. If you deign to, you would be most welcome for an, in my humble opinion, overdue visit to Versailles. There, you and Louis (as well as Count Falkenstein) may personally discuss the needs and wants of your dear country."

It was obvious the Queen was taking drags on a cigarette as she spoke. "It is only right that being the friends you and Louis are, that such heavy matters be discussed in person. Indeed, it seems the nature of the Tripartite Pact needs to be cemented upon a few points---what better place to speak than Versailles. We await the pleasure, my dear friend."

While France is without a doubt less economically powerful than the much larger Hindustan, nobody in their right mind should be afraid of the Hindustani military.

Therefore, French criticisms and concerns are probably largely unfounded, considering the small 'blue-water' force operated by the navy is expected to be blown apart by the Chinese within weeks, the airforce possesses no deep-strike capabilities, much less bombers, and the airforce's fighter force, propped up largely with MiG-21s and low-cost types, is still hundreds of airframes smaller than the Estenlands' numbers, a country less than a fifth the size of Hindustan and much less economically capable.

In short, nobody, least of all the French, should really feel threatened by Hindustan. After all, the government's foreign policy has for years concentrated on trying to get other countries to leave the Indian subcontinent alone, while still trying to promote human rights, but all the while staring down the barrels of many obscenely large arsenals of nuclear weapons.

While the government is not at all happy about the beating-up and arrest of the outgoing Hindustani diplomats in Paris, no requests are made to Marimaia to help out, the government thinking that such would be a breach of good faith between the two countries. And it isn't as if Hindustan can do anything about it except complain loudly.

After a discussion between His Excellency and the rest of the government, Marimaia One (Chiisu's luxury converted An-124 Condor) was being loaded in preparation for a flight to Paris.

Chiisu was not one for travelling light. Marimaia One was loaded up with the royal limousine and the escort motorbikes driven by the members of the Tiger's Claws (Chiisu's small and slowly growing personal black ops team); after all of the luggage and various gifts for Louis were loaded aboard, Chiisu's entourage made their way on.

Travelling with the Tiger King to France would be Tian (of course); royal secretary Kihoshi Suzuku; royal butler Michio; Foreign Minister Rongyi Bei; Chiisu's four Yakuza-donated bodyguards; the three members of the Tiger's Claws; and ten members of the NeoSuun Guard. With diplomatic concerns being resolved and the monarchy proving quite successful, the regime's attention began to focus on the state of the Marimaian military. The French satellite technology would prove extremely useful, but the NeoSuunists had learnt their lessons from the Bonstock War. Marimaia was still not completely secure against foreign aggression.

The influx of Western influence in the region was proving to be a concern for the Taishita government; if powers such as Hudecia continued operating in what was seen as Marimaia's backyard, national security was at risk. Intelligence indicated that an attack on Marimaia's sovereign territory was unlikely, but that could always change. The decision was made to pursue what had been dubbed 'total security doctrine'; the doctrine laid out the paths by which Marimaia would 'ensure its national sovereignty'.

The training of the Burmese military had proceeded quite well; conventional Marimaian troops were gradually being brought home as Burmese forces took over security. However, Marimaian special forces remained in the nation to provide a rapid response to any insurgency. In Malaysia, the Hasan Army was providing a solid backbone for the new Malayan Army; both Malaysian and Burmese forces were receiving generous quantities of Marimaian-produced hardware in the form of transport vehicles, light tanks and aircraft. Meanwhile, Marimaia itself began looking for more advanced hardware.

The Ministry of Defence began searching for C4I hardware and software, as well as better early-warning systems, including AWACS. The search was also started for recon drones and their derivative combat systems. The first NittleGrasper stealth bomber had worked fairly well, and production had been started on two more; although small, a stealth bomber wing was seen as a useful tool in the greater security drive.

Finally, the military had put forward a proposal for a Southeast Asian ABM system; Marimaia already possessed a limited system of its own, but plans were drawn up for a system designed to protect Marimaia and her neighbours. Suu Kyi and Crown Prince Jamil had already shown interest in the idea; the Taishita government was now in talks with the Politburo in Hanoi, as bringing Vietnam on side would allow them to position installations much further out than currently envisioned.
Beth Gellert
10-01-2005, 06:53
A South East Asian ABM shield was something that the ISCBG was well placed to have a hand in, technologically speaking, having two ABM missile systems currently in service (CS-400 Red Sky and CS-500 Arawn). Seeing Marimaia, and indeed the wider Sphere, as the sort of ally against potential out-right Chinese aggression that may allow the Commonwealth to almost totally negate Western involvement, Portmeirion was keen to see said nations survive the first five minutes of any such invisioned conflict as may bring the Chinese to southern Asia. The possibility of Igovian technical support in an ambitious South East Asian Anti-Ballistic-Missile defence programme was, it was no lie to say, strong.
And, apart from the aforementioned reasons, Portmeirion simply didn't want Paris to get involved in the sort of massive research programme that may allow they too to instal ABM defences and make the despotic leadership quicker to consider nuclear solutions to its invented problems.

In the interests of further cooperation, as well as the realisation that the ISCBG's involvement in the ABM shield's development would be a massive advantage, Central Command send tentative plans to Portmeirion regarding the proposed shield.

The plans call for a currently undetermined number of ABM installations to be spread across Marimaia, Burma, Malaysia and Vietnam. These missile sites will be tied into an advanced early warning sytem comprised of radar installations in all four nations, detector vessels in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and any AWACS aircraft that Taishita is able to acquire. After the destruction of Rangoon and the massive damage to Taishita caused by missile attacks during the Bonstock War, Marimaia has been discussing the situation with neighbouring countries, all of whom have come to see Chinese and Western possession of such weaponry as a potential risk to their wellbeing.

While it is not the Igovian style to take-over another nation's development in any respect, and the usual method is to provide technical aid in putting domestic programmes into action, Portmeirion often makes exceptions in issues of revolutionary security or of emergency. It seems likely that Beth Gellert's Marathon Airborne Command and Surveillance aircraft may suit Taishita's potential requirement for AWACS aircraft, or that, more to the point, its ASR-M Spectre of Communism Radar and related systems may be of use to the proposed ABM network. The Igovian radar systems would possibly be suitable for incorporation into airframes of a type already used or produced by the Marimaians.

The apparently defensive nature of the South East Asian programme continues to play well with the general Beddgelen public, which is generally encouraged to see it as a sign of the Marimaian's digging in rather than looking to continued expansion (which, as a point aside, would also be well received at least by a minority audience).

Central Command is heartened by the Beddgelen suggestions; after some discussion with the NeoSuunist government, Central Command begins inquiries regarding the price of such technology.

Meanwhile, talks with Hanoi appear to starting well, but there are several issues to be resolved before any ABM system can be agreed upon.

While the Hindustani ABM shield is not exactly non-existent, it is without a doubt much less capable than the Bedgellen systems, being propped up with S-200 Mod 6 missiles, copies of the old SA-5 Gammon. While the system can engage ballistic missiles, the radar system is elderly and the launchers equally so.

Therefore, whatever the circumstances, the HDF would definately be interested in purchasing CS-400 systems in bulk, perhaps 15-20 units.

The government is also heavily interested in the Asian ABM shield program. After all, its probably a good idea to protect the subcontinent, and pretty much everywhere else, from Sinoese aggression.

His Excellency beamed at the cabinet. "I can safely say that I've rescued our relationship with France. Wanfa, your satellite toy is on the way. Just don't tell anyone about it."

Wanfa nodded. "Thank you. We have news of the ABM shield; Burma and Malaysia have said yes, Vietnam is currently thinking about it. May I suggest that we offer the Vietnamese a few incentives?"

Premier Supachai frowned. "What kind of incentives?"

"Officer exchange programs, subsidies on weapon purchase, that sort of thing. We need the Vietnamese on our side, so it's best if we sweeten the pot for them."

Suun agreed with Wanfa's idea. "Remember, Vietnam isn't like Burma and Malaysia; we don't have influence over their government, they're an equal to us. Is it true that the Beddgelens have offered their expertise?"

Wanfa smirked. "Indeed it is. We still have to hammer out the specifics, but it seems that the shield is certainly on the way."

"Excellent. Now, what do we do about Kanendru? Xiaguo could prove a threat to our national security if they are victorious there; any ideas?"

Kichi cleared his throat. "Your Excellency, I did have a few ideas...."

Airspace over Central Burma

The ten soldiers in Zero Team Eight-One found themselves standing at the open ramp of the heavily modified Y8M-II transport, staring into the night. THe jumpmaster checked the conditions, and tapped his intercom to communicate to the navigators that everything was as it should be.

From the cockpit area, the pilot gave the order to go ahead with the mission. The jumpmaster checked the conditions once again, and put three fingers up. Then he made a slashing motion.

It was time to go.

The soldiers, in a single file, quickly ran down the ramp and jumped into the air. It was a tradition in the Islandian para-corps to run down the ramp before a high altitude drop, and one that often helped soldiers get their minds off the impending danger on the ground below.

Still, as Lieutenant Shu found himself hurtling towards the earth at the rate of several miles a minute, the mission was all he could think about, though he did keep a close eye on the watch strapped securely to his left wrist.

This mission was dangerous, that was for certain. The Marimaians had proven themselves dangerous enemies, and even if the Marimaians didnt find them, there were also some Islandian special units nearby, still helping the Marimaians with their efforts to clean up the rebel Burmese. Someone was bound to shoot at them during this mission, and Shu found himself cursing the damned bureaucrat who ordered this half-assed assignment.

The watch blinked, and Shu quickly reached for the D-ring on his parachute, yanking it open, hard. He felt a jolt as the parachute blossomed and slowed his descent from a breathless tumble to a slow crawl.

Their mission was to gather reconaissance on Marimaian dispositions in Burma. Lately, Forces Command had become wary of Marimaian intent in SouthEast Asia, and with little troops by the area, had ordered Zero Eight-One and several other special teams to parachute into various areas of SE Asia.

Shu shook his head, and hoped there was no one waiting for him. Beneath his feet, he saw a large field of tall grass, with small structures to the east and dense forests to the west.. He sighed.

Could have been triple canopy jungle, he thought, counting his blessings as he hit the ground hard and rolled.

Taishita, Marimaia

The Dalai Lama was caught off-guard by the enthusiastic welcome he received from Darin Thanarat and the other Buddhist leaders in Marimaia; as a purely faith-related visit, the Dalai Lama would not be meeting any government leaders, but would be discussing the 'path of Buddhism in the ever-changing world'.

At least, that was the official line. Thanarat made the true purpose clear as soon as he and the Lama were behind closed doors.

"His Excellency sends his regards, and wishes to assist you in matters of state."

"Matters of state?"

"You may have noticed the Marimaian crusade against tyranny, isolation and oppression in Asia. Burma is now democratic, as is Malaysia. We are engaging Hanoi in constructive cooperation, and opposing the growing threat of Islamic expansionism. We must also pay attention to the largest source of oppression. An enormous nation with a seemingly enormous appetite for conquest."

The Lama furrowed his brow. "You're not actually considering taking on China? The regimes there would crush Marimaia like a bug if they so wished!"

Thanarat scowled. "Perhaps, but as you may have noticed China is currently in strife. They have uprisings in the north and west, while also carrying out an invasion of Kanendru. It is time for your people to regain their independence. There are citizens of Marimaia who remember when Tibet was a peaceful independent nation; it may be time to resurrect it."

"How? Chinese forces are swarming all over Tibet in order to reach Kanendru!"

Thanarat smirked. "Well, China is going to be having more than her fair share of problems if they continue with their current campaigns; if the opportunity presents itself, you should consider the possibility of Tibet regaining independence. Xinjiang and Mongolia are asserting themselves, Tibet should do so as well."

Burma

Suu Kyi finished her televised address concerning the growing trouble in nearby Kanendru and returned to her offices in Mandalay; the city had become the new capital once it had been sufficiently restored as Rangoon required many years of work to restore. Her Marimaian liaison Vidura Dabaransi was waiting for her.

"Well done! I can see why the junta were always so afraid of you. I must admit, you've done an excellent job as President; your nation is recovering well."

Suu Kyi smiled. "I appreciate the praise, but without Marimaian assistance we'd either still be under the junta or in chaos. How is His Excellency?"

"Fine, just fine. As you realise, he has a lot of issues to attend to; even with Premier Supachai assisting him, he still has a full schedule."

"Understandable. Oh, I was wondering about something, perhaps you could tell me; who were those people disembarking at Mandalay Airport?"

"Excuse me?"

"I was informed that a group of Caucasians got off a plane in Mandalay and transferred almost immediately to a Marimaian military transport. I was just wondering who they were."

Vidura smiled. "Ah, them. Sensible Westerners who saw their own nation going under, so they decided to seek better climates."

"Defectors?!"

Vidura smirked and tapped his nose. "We prefer to call them 'enlightened cousins'."

Central Burma

Major Kikitsu yawned loudly as he inspected the terrain map; as much as he appreciated his current assignment, he wanted some action. Most of the hardline rebels had been wiped out during the Bonstock War; Bonstock's destruction of Rangoon had resulted in the nationalistic rebels charging off to fight alongside Marimaia. After the war ended, any rebels still alive were disarmed and sent back home; the spirit of the resistance still lived on in the opposition Free Myanmar Party, but up against Suu Kyi and the National League for Democracy they had fared badly in the elections.

Marimaia still kept troops in Burma after the official handover of power, but they were mostly special forces and training personnel. The Burmese Defence Forces, now 100,000 strong, were deployed mainly to patrol borders and sort out any lasting ethnic tensions; combined with skilled Marimaian diplomats, ethnic problems were getting solved slowly.

So here he was, in charge of Marimaian operations in the district. He'd received a promotion after the end of the Myanmar War; he'd been the one who found Islandians hiding in the jungles, and now he was overseeing a number of them. He just really wanted something exciting to happen. There was strife in Indonesia and something developing with China, but he was still stuck in Burma, keeping unruly natives in line.

First Commander Wei Wenzhou walked through the gray-tiled halls of the Operations Center confidently, turning into a bathroom. He set his brief case down and fixed his collar.

Next to him, another man, a senior colonel with an Air Descent patch on his shoulder, pulled at his hair. Other than him, the restroom was empty.

The senior colonel tapped at his iPod, set the thing to maximum volume, and soon, music ricocheted off the walls. He nodded at First COmmander Wei, who quickly slid the briefcase over to him.

"We cannot allow this to happen," the senior colonel said. "Have you issued the orders?"

"I have sent five Zero teams to destinations all over Southeast Asia on a priority routing from the Ministry of Intelligence. Whoever asked was quickly deflected; by the time the truth is discovered, it will be too late."

The senior colonel nodded, accepting his comrade's explanation. "Well done. If all goes as we have planned, then--"

"--then East Islandia and Marimaia will once again be at war," First Commander Wei replied. "And China will be less several nations opposed to it. You are a shrewd man, Colonel."

The colonel waved off his colleague's compliments with a flick of his hand and a smile. He quickly turned down the iPod, and patted Wei on the back.

"Good to see you again, First Commander," he said. "I would chat, but I am in a rush."

Wei nodded. "Goodbye, sir," he said as the senior colonel left. He turned to the mirror and examined his face carefully.

Now, if the formidable Sr. Colonel Tang discovered this plot (he was the ground commander of the Islandian contingent in Burma), they would have hell. But he was confident nothing would be realized. The operators he sent in were fanatical, and would not be taken alive, even in actions against a nation deemed their ally

Central Burma

Lieutenant Shu shook his head as he surveyed hte slopes of the jungle, first with his binoculars, then with the infrared scope of his rifle.

As if missions didnt get any worse than this, Shu thought. Not only had he been landed in Central Burma, instead of the border areas populated with various ethnicities and harsh jungle, the fact that his orders came on a priority tasking meant that he had almost no time to double-check his intelligence and rehearse the mission with his team.

Shu tapped his rifle, a SAR21-68, or a recently made SAR-21 assault rifle chambered for hte new American 6.8 x 45mm ammunition. Although he would have normally been satisfied with this weapon, the fact that he and most of his team were carrying it meant easy identification in case of a firefight--it was a typically Islandian item, and the 6.8x45mm cartridge was used only by several nations. Those who didnt carry the new rifles used XR47s, or bullpup rifles chambered for 7.62x39mm rounds, yet another easily identifiable weapon; Islandia had bought thousands as a stop-gap measure when replacing its old Ak47s with bullpups.

Everything screamed 'Islandian'; their digital camouflage, the distinct (if seen) mottled camouflage pattern on their faces, and their equipment. Luckily, Shu could change tactics as needed, and that could level the playing field ever so slightly.

Shu sighed, and tapped his medic on the shoulder. "How is she?" he whispered, motioning toward Weapons Corporal Sai, who sat propped up against a tree.

Their medic shook his head. "Broken leg," he said. "She was overloaded."

Shu hissed in anger, and glared at Sai, who shrunk back from his gaze. To be fair, Shu wasnt angry at Sai; she was rather new to the Zero team, and although she had passed the extensive training course, she had not yet served on field ops. Still, the orders had specifically ordered that the Zero team be at full strength, so Shu had to include Sai, although he could have overrode the orders (field commander's override), but he had trusted her anyway.

Shu had to decide quickly, so he looked downslope and checked again for hostiles. "Za, Qiang, Wu, stay with Sai. The rest of you form on me, and head towards Objective Cobra."

The team split into two, and Shu took five others down the slope and across several streams. He followed the field display in his HUD, but from time to time, he had several of his soldiers validate their bearings with map readings and GPS taskings, all of which proved them to be on the correct course.

Fifteen minutes later, they found themselves standing at the edge of a large rice paddy. Shu stared in disbelief...this was not on his maps. He turned to his soldiers and motioned for them to move back into the forest.

Now, if they could only cross without being seen...

Kikitsu was bored to say the least. 'Evening Express with Hitoshi Kwan' would be on soon; as one of the few Marimaian shows broadcast in Burma, the troops always gathered round to watch it. Until then, Kikitsu was pottering around his quarters, reading whatever came to hand.

He jumped as the intercom flared into life.

"Sir, could you come to operations? We may have a situation."

Finally! thought Kikitsu as he hurtled out of the room. When he arrived at operations, the officer on duty saluted.

"Sir, a peasant called us a few minutes ago to say that he thought he saw a parachutist."

Kikitsu's eyes lit up. "Where?"

"Above his house. You know them, a bird sets them off on invasion fears. It could have been anything. He also claims that he heard a plane. We had one in the area at the right time."

Kikitsu frowned. "Still, if we don't investigate then HQ will have our heads when the guy moans to them that we didn't take him seriously. Do we have a unit in the area?"

"No, but we can have one there soon. Jungle Warfare Corps."

"Cool. They'll be glad of having something to do."

There are still around 200 Hindustani troops in Myanmar, most of them maintainance and administrative personnel, employed in helping the new army maintain its wide range of weaponry, much of it donated AMX-13s and BTR-50s from Hindustan. With the major war in Nepal underway, foreign deployments had been cut down to the barest minimum, saving up for what is viewed as an inevitable Sinoese invasion.

However, there is still a small group of MARCOS troopers, on counter-insurgency missions throughout the country.

In the jungles of central Burma, Lieutenant Amanda Copeland watches through an infra-red scope as a transport aircraft passes overhead, certainly not one of the aging Antonovs or Ilyushins used by the HAF or donated to the MAF, and therefore highly suspicious.

Dressed in a sleeveless shirt and shorts, Copeland could have easily been mistaken for one of the innumerable foreign adventure travelers who flocked to Burma before the recent conflict if it wasn't for the Ak-47 assault rifle and ammunition pouch that she carries. Similar to the French foreign legion, the MARCOS squadron draws recruits from all over the world, a quality that is almost necessary to the unit's survival due to rock-bottom enlistment rates among Hindustanis themselves.

The patrol quickly gathers up its few bits of equipment and walks towards a small stream that runs through the area.

Central Burma

Field Specialist Qiang rested his shoulder against the tree and put down his assault weapon. Twenty meters in front of him was a small stream that gurgled and bubbled quietly, and this was the northernmost corridor of the perimeter that the able-bodied soldiers formed around their injured comrade.

Ten minutes ago, Lieutenant Shu had sent a quick message over the squadcommunications net, notifying the others that they had to find a detour around a village that was not listed in satellite intelligence and previous maps. He had also mentioned the presence of locals and possibly hostile forces in the area, and if worse came to worse, he told his subordinates to masquerade as Islandian Raiders from Colonel Tang's joint Special Operations detachment that was stationed in Burma.

Qiang knew that ploy would not hold; first of all, Tang's men wore the older Disruptive Pattern Material camouflage, whereas they wore mostly American-style MARPAT digital camouflage and another Canadian camouflage that was proven to work in jungles. They resembled more Hudecian troops in terms of dress, and for all he knew, Hudecia did not have any soldiers in the region.

Secondly, they had parachutes nearby; if found, hostile forces would immediately know that they were infiltrators. Who would use parachutes if helicopters were available for immediate and easy (not to mention less risky) transport, unless to enter without detection.

Qiang shook his head and felt a mosquito jab him in his exposed neck. He hissed quietly and swatted the bug.

He saw movement from the corner of his eye, and quickly leveled his assault rifle, only to find himself aiming his weapon at a small oppossum ten meters away, perched on a tree trunk. He chuckled to himself, shook his head, and sank deeper into the underbrush. Qiang flipped the toggle feature on his scope, but found to his dismay that it did not work after several tries. He turned his back towards the stream for a brief moment, as if contemplating whether he should call for a spare IR scope...if anyone else in his squad had time to pack any.

Central Burma

Dawn was breaking, and Shu was worried. He could have sworn he saw one or two villagers looking in their direction as the six slid back into the forests, but he could not do anything without drawing further attention. Though some of his teammates carried "suppressed" weapons, like any good soldier, he knew that the gunshots would still be audible, and, to a trained ear, clear enough to be identified as a gunshot.

They had been inside Central Burma for an hour already, and problems were popping up like West Islandian rebels in spiderholes. For one, Shu's point man had almost stepped on a poisonous snake, but had quickly corrected his mistake with a full shotgun blast to the coiled creature, who was likely ready to strike. That had probably sent off a signal to anyone within a few hundred meters, if not an entire kilometer, and Shu had ordered his men to hurriedly retreat to the east, running parallel to the mountain ridge that they were atop. The village was another two kilometers south, and the rest of the team held a position a kilometer to the northwest.

For the twelfth time that night, Shu called up a map on his HUD and consulted his coordinates. He was proceeding on the right path, but as tactics went, he was doing the right thing, occupying the high ground.

Things began to sort themselves out until Shu's pointman paused, made the fade away symbol, and put his hand to his ear. The rest of hte squad listened carefully, and when he heard what it was that his point man had also heard, he felt cold sweat run down his back.

The faint rumble of trucks could be heard in the distance.

i cant remember if we decided to simulate the tsunami, but I think we did, rite?

***********
Task Group Hope
Somewhere in the Indian Ocean

Task Group Hope consisted of three amphibious assault ships, six destroyers, frigates, and escort cruisers, two supply ships, one medium cruiser, and three submarines. All in all, it was a fairly decent collection of firepower, to say the least, and although not as powerful as the Abraham Lincoln carrier battle group moored to the east, was still substantial.

For weeks now, the ships had been providing aid to the tsunami victims, so the priority routing from the Ministry of Intelligence came as a surprise; the orders were for one of their diesel submarines to leave for Burmese waters on a stealth patrol (do not initiate contact, stalk, or likewise be detected).

Captain Qio shook his head in annoyance as his submarine, a fairly large Tidal Priestess class attack submarine left the Task Group behind them. Even stranger, his orders came with the seal of the Command Council, though no signatures were included in the fax.

Still, priority orders were priority orders, so who was a mere submarine captain, albeit one with ten years of experience in the Indian Ocean, to complain?

******
At around the same time, Forces Command headquarters detected a series of priority routings originating from the Intelligence Ministry. When pressed, the liasion from the Intelligence Ministry replied that he had heard nothing of it from his end, which only infuriated various commanders. At this time, several flag officers at Operations began to track down both the source and the recipient of the priority taskings, though more emphasis was placed on the source.

This proved to be a major mistake, as First Commander Wei had cleverly covered his tracks with a trail of bureaucratic paperwork and dead ends. It would be another two days before the Operations personnel discovered the origin of the orders, and by that time, Wei would be long gone, bound for Sinoese-controlled China or perhaps another nation nearby.

Before he left, however, First Commander Wei issued one last priority order, this time tasked to an Air Force paratroop unit in transit in India, on their way to fighting the Xiannese in Hindustan. The order authorized the elite soldiers to pursue Maoist rebels (whom Wei said was working with Chinese soldiers) and possibly linked to Burmese rebels, into Burma.

Wei purposely did not use Level IV encryption, thereby allowing any signal intercept units in the area to intercept and read the orders; if the orders were intercepted, the Bedgellens would undoubtedly roar in rage and detain all Islandian units passing through Bedgellen borders.

Shortly afterwards, Wei left the building and boarded a small, chartered Airbus luxury plane for his long flight to Malaysia and from there, to destinations unknown.

Dinh Xuan Lanh paced back and forth in his office, muttering various expletives to himself. He eventually stopped when a knock at the door heralded the arrival of Khamtai Souphanouvong, the Marimaian representative who was currently negotiating the ABM treaty, among other things.

"You wished to see me?"

Lanh scowled. "Shut the door!"

His aide pulled the door shut as he left, leaving the Politburo member alone with his guest. Lanh poured himself a drink and offered one to Khamtai, who politely refused. Lanh shook his head and sat down.

"These talks aren't going very quickly, are they? Your nation comes to us in the spirit of neighbourly cooperation, as you always have; unfortunately our esteemed General Secretary is holding things up. As usual. I sometimes wonder why we nominated him."

Khamtai smiled slightly. "I apologise if I sound rude, but I do have a lot of work to finish. My superiors wish a progress report, and I have to think of the best way to say that things are stalling."

Lanh leant forward. "Maybe you should tell your superiors that there is a way to fast-track this treaty and all other agreements you wish to have with us. I've followed Marimaia's record; liberating your neighbours who then become your allies, it's a good idea. You're not the first nation to surround itself with client states, but you're certainly succeeding well."

Khamtai sighed. "Please, if you have something to say..."

"Open warfare is ugly; however, a power struggle in a nation where the political leadership keeps top-level movements quiet may go without trouble. The General Secretary is a bureaucrat; hell, most of the Politburo are. They live in their own world, where they rule and they keep tabs on everyone who could be a threat. We are targeted by human rights groups for 'suppressing religion' and various other reasons; perhaps the rise of a reformist General Secretary would be welcomed."

Khamtai smirked. "I see. We support your attempt for power, and in return you fast-track any proposals Marimaia comes to you with."

"Within reason; I'm not going to sign Vietnam over to you, I'd just make it more agreeable to your advances. I see our futures as linked; China is hostile to everyone, the West are moving into Asia, and that Kalla person is consolidating his power. The General Secretary sees inwardly; I see greater cooperation as being key."

Khamtai thought for a moment. "I will communicate your proposal to my government. Have you considered the Igovian reaction? They might not appreciate the overthrow of the current leadership."

"I believe that they would appreciate my reformist ways more than the slow crawl of our current administration. I believe in engaging the people more than our current leaders, much as your leadership does. Chiisu Suun has shown that Asian nations benefit greatly when old fossils depart and young vigorous leaders rise to power."

Lanh was pleased to receive another visit from Khamtai, only a day after their intial discussion. Khamtai smiled politely as he sat down.

"I am pleased to inform you that after discussions with my superiors, you have received an invitation to Taishita. Obstensibly it will be to strengthen diplomatic ties as we progress with our bilateral talks, but it will actually be of a more...revolutionary nature. Lanh smirked. "A suitability test?"

"In short, yes. No-one wants an inferior specimen of leadership rising to power, now do they?"
