On to World news now, and the Freethinker Ministry of Defence has announced the deployment of three mechanised divisions, totalling 36,000 troops and some 20,000 field support personnel, along with high numbers of air and naval craft to The Island States for a surprising to say the least joint combat exercise.
Needless to say, the announcement came as a shock to many military analysts, who were very intrigued by the activation of the 2nd, 4th and 7th Mechanised Divisions so soon after they had completed their last major exercise in the Southern Training Theatre two weeks ago. However, the event does seem to be setting a new trend in the Freethinker Military, with exercises now being increased in frequency and size.
Some members of the opposition have been raising questions about these recent force movements. The general readiness of all the armed forces has been increased to previously unseen levels, and many people are wondering just what is being planned. On a related note, several new weapon systems are being bought into service much quicker than expected, and some say too soon. The fourth Zodiac class spaceborne destroyer, the Cancer, has been bought into active service a month early, and the Navarre defense network has just been given a 200 billion Mintel overhaul that has nearly been completed according to the latest reports. The 'Unity' Fighter Bomber and the 'Viper' attack chopper have also been added to the arsenal of our forces.
The official government line is that the new force levels are simply a reaction to a general increase in threats to our interests and allies, rather than an imminent danger to The Freethinker Commonwealth, and that although the current forces have become more active, there has been no effort to activate the reserve forces or to step up recruitment.
