Newsflash: Lasatania becomes one party state (again)

Lasatania
16-11-2004, 15:20
Welcome to the news hour on Lasatanian State Television..

Tonight's main story is the addresss to be made by the leader of the Socialist Party, Gregor Kolinksky, following his party's recent electoral victory.

Following that victory, he has been working with the RUling Council to establish a framework for assumption of power by the Socialist Party. Sources inside the party say that negotiations regarding the nature of the new state are at a critical point and that an announcement could be made during his speech, which we will broadcast shortly.

In fact, we can now take you live to the Hall of Martyrs, in Korova, where his speech is set to begin..

<cut to Gregor Kolinksky at the podium>

"Komrades, I stand before you now to tell you of the developments that have taken place since the Party's victory in the recent elections. In that time, the Party has been conducting intense negotiations with the Ruling Council and both sides have concluded that as a state, Lasatania need not fear from one party control. We have concluded that all conflict within Lasatania has been the result of conflicting factions seeking to better their position and that previous leader's have merely sought to further their own cause than that of Socialism. To that end, the Ruling Council and the Socialist party declare that there shall not be a referendum regarding the restoration of Party rule and that instead the Party shall become the instrument of the State.

With such a mandate, the Party has drawn up a list of proposed measures to ensure hegemony within the state. They are;

1. The prohibition of all other political parties.

2. The introduction of socialist education at all levels of school

3. The reformation of the state media and information agencies, LASCOMM and Interlas.

4. Compulsory conscription for all males between the ages of 18 and 24 for a two-year period.

5. The creation of a politburo for the control of all state affairs.

6. The introduction of a minimum working week of 45 hours, with standardisation of wages across the board.

7. The founding of a new socialist defence treaty, aimed at thwarting our enemies and allowing for the spread of socialism throughout the world.

Komrades, an exciting future awaits us. We have come through the dark years of political experimentation and infighting and emerged at the other side, our belief intact and our will to succeed even stronger. With all our combined might, we shall elevate Lasatania to the status of a super power and will spread our fame throughout the world!

<Cut to studio>

Presenter: An interesting speech to say the least. To discuss it I have Professor Kovech from the Korova Academy of Political Science here.

Presenter: So, Profeesor, what impact will these measures have..

Kovech (an ardent Red..): Well, for a start we will see our people unite behind the red banner once again.. I feel that the measures introduced will be the first of many, and that there will be a resurgence in support for Socialism in the country..

Presenter: and what of the opposition parties?

Kovech: Ach.. let's just say I think they had better consider booking their holidays now.. he he he..

Presenter: Ok... on that note I hand you over to Anna with the weather...
