Four young men were tired to poles in the courtyard of the Peoples Ministry of Justice, standing before them was a firing squad, readying their weapons...


Each of the men were asked, "What do you have to say?" by the judge.

The judge walked up and down the courtyard as they started to speak, the first man said, "I accuse myself of thought crime... I had impure thoughts about the Czarina, and I conspired, in my mind, to harm the Czar and harm federal installations, of these charges I am guilty... I ask only for a quick and merciful death."

The second man said, "I accuse myself of thought crime. I had a desire to shoot a member of the nobility, over a matter of a minor traffic dispute... I am guilty of this horrible crime, I ask only for a quick and merciful death."

The third man shook his head, not wanting to go through with it, "I accuse... I accuse myself of thought crime... I am a thought criminal, I desired to incite rebellion among the peasantry... Of this crime I am guilty and hope only to receive a quick death."

The last man was in tears, "I accuse myself of thought crime..." He choked up, "I am guilty... I am guilty, God have mercy on my soul! I wanted to love the Czar, but I can't... I wanted to love the party and do as they told me, but I can't... I just can't! God have mercy on my soul!"

The judge shouted, "Ready!" and the men all snapped to attention, raising their arms, "Aim!" and they all took aim... "Fire!"

The volley from the twenty on the firing squad tore into the four men tied to the poles and they were all dead before they knew what hit them.

Really, deaf? I had no idea... Anyway, in my nation, nobody is born deaf, we genetically engineer that... There are literally hundreds of thousands of deaf veterans though (lots of soldiers get into a thick fire-fight and have to use a comrades shoulder to rest a medium-machine gun, as there is no time to bipod it or tripod it... So people are deaf, a lot)

But, we do have advanced hearing restoration techniques (I generally consider overall DA medical technology to be at least 30-50 years ahead of current RL 2004 technology).

We also have literally hundreds of millions of posters, that read such as, "Love The Czar!" and have his picture, or "The Czar Is Watching You!", or "Big Brother Is Watching!", or "You'd Better Beware, The DIS Is Everywhere!"

I am curious about one thing. Is creativity on the list of non-sanctioned thoughts? If so, I feel I must disagree since creativity is what propels empires to greatness. In that case we have no choice other then to pull our people out of Decisive Action. The threat level is concidered to high now for them to operate safely. We cannot accept that your people can arrest Iuthian diginitaries on a whim and as such we won't tolerate such conditions.

As much as we feel an embassy is important for relations we aren't about to risk the lives of our people. This transmission is our formal 24-hour notification of our desire to pull out our entire diplomatic staff in Decisive Action, unless condititions change in the next 24-hours we would like our people to be out on the first plane available.

We are sorry it has come to this, but you have made it too unsafe for our people to work without fear of their very lifes... the fact they can be arrested for nothing more then asking the wrong question makes our ambassadors job impossible. Of course, that method of of mind-control is easily dealt with by nailing a sturdy plank over the speakers and perhaps also the screen. If you really wanted to ensure they got their required dose of propaganda, you'd have sound sensors installed in the houses as well to ensure the 'Emergency Bulletins' are booming out loud and clear, and if they're not, a little red light blinks into life at the local Thought Police headquarters ;)

Volcano Island, Former DA (Der Angst)

It had been a while since the cataclysm killed 90% of the population. What followed had been terror, destruction, and general decline.

Yet, Volcano Island was the first of the earth- based territories to regain some sort of 'unity', some sort of 'government'... Some sort of 'sanity'.

Incidentally, unlike most other Entities developing, it was quite loyal to the old, the past, and it considered itself to be Angstian, nothing else.

Nevermind them currently being the only 'true' Angstians in sol...

But that was a secondary issue. For now, the people worked on getting things on Track. Granted, there wasn't overly much industry in the hyperurbanised nightmare of Volcano Island, being the 'Think Tank' of DA it was more concentarted on other things... So, its ressources were quite limited.

Yet, it worked, again, and old capabilities were about to be rebuild, which wouldn't be all that hard... The loss of life had been dramatic, the material damage however was, in fact, quite puny.

And so, information begun to arrive, about the world out there... And of course, this had to result in a lot of snickering.

It is, of course, rather ironic if a nation barely handling external manipulation of the mind begins to operate a thought police, when a nation with approximately 90% psionics doesn't do it. It is, of course, equally amusing when thought crimes are given such a... wide spectrum... Since just about everyone will have such thoughts, some time.

And of course, oppressive regimes tend to develop resistance... But apparently, Mississipians were more like drones, rather than humans. Or so the sixth- graders argued, admittedly in not entirely serious ways.
