Hello everyone.

I'm new here and my name is Philippe Lemieux.I am the famous  leader of the Republic of Lemieuxstad in the North Pacific Region.Below is a small description of the real me not the one who governs the country:

Country of origin: Canada(Quebec province but unfortunately this is not yet a country)
Age: 23
Sex: Male
Useful facts: Been role-playing and gaming for almost 10 years now.Been an addict of games like Civ, SimCity etc. and have an hardcore passion for all things military.Been working as a freelance illustrator for 2 years and I'm starting my own graphic design company in a short time.I am also the gamemaster of a live-action diplomacy game much like this very on-line game.

So I perused through many of the FAQs but didn't find many answers to my questions so here goes and I hope I'm in the right section for that:

1 - OK I think I grasp pretty much the functionning of the non-forum part of the game but how do the In-Character part of it works. Is there any fixed rules or everything is just decided by role-playing.If yes are there any referees or ''gamemasters'' that can state officially that you have, say 500 Leo2A6 main battle tank.

2- In reference to the previous question.Once you roleplay the thing how do you pay for them.Because I searched through my country's datasheet but didn't find anything apart from a subjective rating of what my ecnonmy is.There's no ''credits'', ''budget'' or any hard data to confirm that I have x or y money.

3- Is there a map of some sort of the countries in my region, of the world or anything approaching this. How do I know which countries border my own country?

4- If someone invade me is it all right to say ''there's a bridge at this town and I've placed 50% of my forces there to block your passage''.How the outcome of a strategic military move is decided?

5- How do I trade goods produced by my country. How do I know that I have this type of good or that type?Where and how is it decided?

So I think that's all the questions that pass through my mind as of now.I'm really interested in the role-playing part of the game but I would like to know if there are any hard rules to that part and if there is where could I find them.

Thanks for you patience for the newbie and hope some of you can help me out.

Phil

P.S: This was already posted in the General part of the forum.I didn't intend to double post but I had no idea of where to put that. They pretty much all said to post that here so here goes.Mods if you want or wish to delete this thread go ahead.

There are no hard and fast rules for anything you've mentioned, to my knowledge. Just make sure you're reasonable and consistant. This (http://nseconomy.thirdgeek.com/) seems to be the most-used budget calculator, I don't think anyone will argue if you get your numbers from there. Also the stickies are quite useful guides.

Hope that helps!

This is freeform. I think of this as Codes of Honor then rules. There are no gamemasters. You decide for youself. Then you post it and people can help you make it realistic.

2- In reference to the previous question.Once you roleplay the thing how do you pay for them.Because I searched through my country's datasheet but didn't find anything apart from a subjective rating of what my ecnonmy is.There's no ''credits'', ''budget'' or any hard data to confirm that I have x or y money.

http://www.thirdgeek.com/nseconomy should tell your entire budget.

3- Is there a map of some sort of the countries in my region, of the world or anything approaching this. How do I know which countries border my own country?

You make your own map. If not use real life references. I'm in The New Roman Empire but if need be, I say I'm in the middle of the Med.

4- If someone invade me is it all right to say ''there's a bridge at this town and I've placed 50% of my forces there to block your passage''.How the outcome of a strategic military move is decided?

It's okay. It'd be decided through role-play. This is hard to explain. Better to read war RPs going on for now.

5- How do I trade goods produced by my country. How do I know that I have this type of good or that type?Where and how is it decided?

Trade is easy. Just make an IC post that says you want to trade with a nation. Once they agree, you're trading!

So I think that's all the questions that pass through my mind as of now.I'm really interested in the role-playing part of the game but I would like to know if there are any hard rules to that part and if there is where could I find them.

Thanks for you patience for the newbie and hope some of you can help me out.

One last thing. DO NOT GO TO WAR. Please stick to Character RPs for your own safety. For now anyway. Welcome to NationStates.

(cough) Go to The New Roman Empire, don't forget the "The" (cough)

Answers are in bold :D

1)Just keep track of that stuff yourself and post your acuirement of it. That's all you have to do.

2)If you buy something from a storefront you just say you wired the money. You can sheck to see your budget at various places.

3)No, there might be some playermade ones but nothing official.

4)Perfectly alright for you to say that there is a bridge at point x and I have y many troops there. But you can't say what damage the enemy in this case takes. That's for the other player to decide based on your posts.

5)If you want to trade anything specific just talk to the person you want to trade with. There's no general trade function of NS.

Hope this helps. And on a side note, How can the Bloc be a national party? It's provincial, it makes no sense.

Hey first of all I would like to say welcome to Nation States second I'll answer the Questions

1. No there are no "offical people checking on wars and trades..." But there are people who do that anyways. So I wouldn't recomend cheating or GODmodding. Also you can get kick out for posting illegal things. You can check the list on one of the posts
2. If you want to check your amount of money go here http://www.sunsetrpg.com/nsxmlparser.php

3. There is no map and just assume that everyone in your region is closer to you than any other nation.

4. you could if the town is an island. But 1 it would be useless putting so many troops on a bridge and also boats would go around the bridge and planes would fly over it. Also You don't normally talk about towns when your attacking, citys or states is what people normally do.

5. Think about it logical. A 3 day old country is not going to build Nukes but they can build guns and missles and some planes. each real day is a year in nation states just think about it like that and think of what a nation could build from from the number of years it is.

I hope to see you grow and will take any other question you might have.

The rule of thumb regarding nukes is that your nation has to be at least 1 RL month old...otherwise, other nations will tend to ignore you when you announce your nuclear program.

In order for the Thirdgeek calculator that someone posted a link to earlier to work, you must be in a region with fewer than 100 nations. It won't work if you're in one of the Pacifics.

Welcome to NS :)

Well thanks for all the info.

I already made one InChar post if you want to look at it and give me your feedback that would be really appreciated.

Just post the replies here so that this thread doesnt flood the forum.

Phil

P.S: As for the Bloc Quebecois question well I'll be really happy to discuss that in a polite way if you are willing. But most of the discussions I've had over the net have ended in emotionnal battle and personnal insults so if you promise that it wont end like that I'd be really happy to discuss this issue in the part of the forum made for that.

I'm not that interested in a debate about seperatism. I just don't understand how the Bloc, which only runs canidates in Quebec, can run in federal elections. I was just wondering if you knew as I'm quessing you're a supporter.

Well first off I'm not a very devote supporter of the Parti Québecois the one provincial party that has the power to declare referendums and things like that. However, I do think that Quebec would be better off by itself.

As for your specific question.Well, the Bloc is a different party to the PQ while they do have strong ties the decisions regarding federal politics are not interfered in by the PQ.Also there are all the others party represented in the Quebec province it's just that the Bloc has proved many times that it's there to protect Quebec's interest so I guess that's why people vote for it.

Now as for the Bloc being representative.Well its representative of the Quebec province choice and vision. There are other parties over Canada which are not represented in Quebec but they do get chairs in the parliament.I think it's just fair that way.People from different province vote differently and they have the right to do so and still be represented.

Thanks. That's basically what I thought although I'm still a bit fuzzy on the whole thing. Thanks again for your answer, and welcome again to Nation States. Enjoy.
