OOC: This is an announcement/RD thread for my new superdread, yay! Will be just an introduction here, but if I get stuck or need ideas Ill post them along with regular 'storyline' updates.
IC: Navarre Naval Yards, Navarre, Mainland, The Freethinkers
Feet shuffled and chairs creaked as the various occupants in the conference room looked to find somewhere to sit that would give them the best view of the podium. Out of twenty people in the room, eighteen wore well-cut business suits that were worth the monthly or even the yearly wage of the workers milling in the drydocks and toolsheds outside. Considering that those workers were well-paid gave the right impression as to how rich these people were.
The other two figures wore crisp navy blue Navy uniforms with polished medals and stripes. Fit and alert, they watched as everyone else in the room made themselves comfortable. Laptops, folders, notepads and pens slammed onto the table in choatic fashion, flurries of paper and hand-waving that only died down as the two Navy officers took to the podium sited at one end of the room. The taller, and more senior officer, took the stand and produced a few small notecards in his hands. His subordinate loaded a presentation into the projected and waited for the talk to begin. The lights dimmed slowly, and the room went quiet.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, I have been given permission to announce that Project Nautilas has recieved its final legislative approval and is now moving into the design and production stage."
Light applause, the speaker smiled.
"Few people know your names, but the team of talent, ingueniuity and resourcefulness you wholly represent produced in collabration one of the greatest and most powerful warships ever to set sail. The ultimate conventional weapon of war, the Doujin-class battleship."
First slide, montage of nicely presented if somewhat staged photo's of the Doujin in various situations. All eyes, however, rested on the speaker.
"Over the course of our time with the Doujin class, we discovered both the necessity and the cost of these powerful warships. Whereas the harsh, brutal, and overwhelming nature of modern naval combat enforced the reasoning behind the Doujin's level of armour and protection, the rise of dedicated super-dreadnoughts in other navies has become something of a concern."
Second slide, pictures and data on some opposing craft. All eyes were still on the speaker, though looking slightly less alert now.
"Although we can counter some of the specific intermediate threats, the rise of the superdreadnought as a common warship in many navies is troubling. It has forced us to rely primarily on the Doujin class to counter these vessels in turn. Although the Doujin has remained the leader in the Superdreadnought field, thanks in part to refits, but also to the lack of imagination in our enemies, it is worrisome that our flagships are being bought into the line of fire in order to counter these threats."
"Wishing not to rely on specialist weaponry or outside help, and wishing for an increase in heavy battleship tonnage, Parliament has authorised the construction of five vessels in a new class of heavy battleships, to be called the Nautilas class."
Another slide with the project emblan not sat behind the officer. He continued.
"Project Nautilas will aim to produce five battleships of a similar but reduced size to the Doujin class, and be armed, protected and otherwise engineered as to be a counter-dreadnought platform vastly superior to other similar vessels. Given our vast experience at this level as well as several recent advances, we feel that this is niether an impossible or outlandish goal."
A computer generated image of a crude rendition of the Nautilas appeared. All momentarily turned to look at it, before returning back to gaze at the speaker again.
"Project Nautilas is being entrusted to you, the designers and draftsmen of the Navarre Naval Shipyards, because you have proved time and again that you are masters of your craft. Full funding will commence within days. I look forward to seeing what you can do. Its time to make our name once more. Good luck everyone."
Everyone stood up and applauded politely. Two days later, a press conference declared the project to the world.
