OOC: Something I Have To Say About II

Lately, I (and I am putting this quite frankly) have not seen any interesting threads on II. I am not going to name names. But, it's just that, when I was a younger nation, I saw many threads about wars and international conflicts of that sort. I have seen a plain decline in numbers of these kinds of threads since then, and I have to wonder:

Where did they go?

You should at least grab my interest with a snappy title. I am probably not being entirely fair, though. There are interesting threads out there, but I am not pulled in by the title. And please make an interesting title, so I can get interested, read it, and hopefully, get involved.

And I say again: there were many threads of the kind I am asking for when I was young, but because I was naive and n00bish, I didn't get much of a chance to post in them. And do it for the new nations, to show them NationStates the way it was when I was a lad.

NOTE: Mods, please tell me if I am way out of line here, or if it's in the wrong forum. If it is, could you so kindly move it?

It's just a downtime. During my first nation here, wars were also on the downswing. Give it a few months and they'll pick up again.

I think you may be missing the point of roleplaying - You can do whatever you want. If you want a war, you can start it.

That being said, I think some of the best roleplays are those off-beat and original, not the usual civil-wars. Try something different; You may be suprised.

Good day, and have fun.

[OOC: I can't say I necessarily agree with you. I've seen threads in I.I. run the gamut from silly threads to serious threads that either lived up to their potential or totally fell apart. I've seen periods on I.I. when it seemed that every other thread was a declaration of war between one country or the other and I've seen periods when people are less interested in war RPs.

As much excitement as a war RP can have, I find they get tiresome after a while. Have you heard the expression "too much of a good thing?" That's what I feel about a million and one war threads. To create a story with complex characters, you need more than a war.

Having said that, I've posted threads that have been more character RPs or RPs that have been intended to help paint a more well-rounded picture of my characters and my country but some of them drew little to no interest. It seems a lot of people want to see blood and guts and gore and people getting PWN'D by someone else.

Everything in NationStates is cyclical.]

OOC: Yup, if it weren't for people like that I'd be out of business!

But anyways, I agree with everything you say Sarzonia.

eh.

Speaking as a new nation, there are conflicts if you are willing to look for them.

However, anything that is worthwhile - and these are rare - is immediately taken over by people who have invented new tech and have somewhere in the region of a million frigging aircraft. I'm happy to lose, as the overly ambitious leader of a tiny, relatively rich, warlike nation, but I'd like perhaps not to be soundly trounced over and over again by a nation that enters a random war between minnows to prove what they've got downstairs.

It is mainly a matter of choice - there aren't many wars, so we end up in with the big guys over and over and over again.

Bit of a downer, really. I accept that things are the way they are and will stay the same, but I felt that at the same time I had to make a pissy attempt at complaining.

I have a lot of fun learning to RP, and i'm sure that once I get to a decent size, I'll be arguing the other side of this point.

Well, if things ever seem to get laggy in the II forums, why don't you pop on over into NS and see what's going on? I've noticed that many (not most, buy many) RPers tend to hang out in one or the other, but there's plenty to do in both.

If there's no good conflicts raging in II, why not try your hand at some character-scale fighting in NS? We don't bite over there!

I've tried to start a few threads, but it seems like people won't post on them unless they're started by one of the "big names."

Yes, I.I. is on an S curve...it has its expansion periods, and its recession periods...but I can't say much better for NationStates (the forum section, not the game)... the threads there just suck half the time.

You can target a big name...that's what I've done OOCly for my two last mobilization/war threads...and it gets me a lot of attention - although a lot of it is negative...

Well, for example.

Preperation for War (ATTN: NATO) (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=367307&highlight=Macabees)

Well basically I added the OOC (ATTN NATO) tag, and it brought in input (mostly negative) from a bunch of RWC and NATO nations. In the end it had little to do with NATO (well not really..but for now).

--------------------------------------

In my RP going on now, Crimson Streaks of War (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=371887&highlight=Macabees) a rogue sub is going hunting..and I put an obscure AutoMagFreek in there, and BAM, I get the tagging of a lifetime...and empty threats from AMF... (AFM most probably considers me a dirty old n00b..but I can care less).

OOC: Yep, pick on people, cause anger, that will make them RP with you in droves....

Well, no, it won't. It will end in a storm of IGNORE cannons being fired and a general feeling of "what a loser" on the other end of things. There have been plenty of "role players" who used or tried to use this method to force others to get involved - not one has a decent reputation, unless you consider a reputation as being a "general loser" a good one.

This sort of thinking proves a lack of understanding of the basis of games - "A game should be fun for all involved". If it's not, you have a hole which will suck down your play completely. There's also the basic respect of asking people if you can use their toys, if they want to play with you...

But hey, whatever floats your boat. Me, I'm here to play. So I observe the basic conventions. You (plural) are free to do what you want - and you will reap the results of your actions. If they're not what you want, you did something wrong.

OOC: I wouldn't say empty threats. ;)

I've got too much going on RP wise and in RL right now to heap another RP on the pile, no offense. Hence why alot of people are going to go to bat for me for the time being until can finish off some of these loose RP's that I have yet to finish. And no, I don't consider you a dirty n00b, it's just you took a post of mine out of context.

So how does one attract attention without earning the title "general loser"?
Vastiva

TGing those who made the thread worked. So did OOC asking about things.
Aid packages, putting ships in "harms way" as neutrals who stumbled in, asking questions during purchases at storefronts...

Simply put, becoming involved without becoming "Yosemite Sam the Nuisance".

Think of it as "How would I want someone to introduce themselves/get involved if I were running this thread?".

OOC:

Don't take this the wrong way, but each and every time I post, I really don't care if one person reads it or a hundred. I write for my own enjoyment and hopefully those that I'm interacting with in the role play are having a good time as well. I'm always learning from others all the time and try to stay clear of stupidity. That's why you don't see me saying "Gee, I'm bored. I know. I'll go start a war." I play my nation (to the best of my ability) as how a real nation would act. That is, we don't start wars at the drop of a hat just because someone insulted my External Affairs Minister's choice of tie.

As far as quality, well, there are always good threads to be found. I never really paid attention to whether the forums were in a "dip" or "rise". Regarding interaction, unless circumstances dictate, myself and my friends in the FKC try to keep threads as open as possible for everyone.

On the point of starting conflicts what I do is just simply state I'm mobilising for war and leave the rest open. Last time I did that I think half the known world went on red alert because of my air patrols in the middle east. It just created loads of tension and no-one knows where that could have led.

Could work for you.

Bluntly, Vrak, this is why you and the FKC rate high in my book of "should read this thread" - you don't do stupid and silly things outside of reason (even Dyelli Beybi's weirdness is "within reason for that nation"), you don't do stupid provocative stuff because you're bored, and you rp as if you have actual interest in the well-being of your nation.

In other words - it's fun to play with you, and read what you write.

I'd like to say that I don't care if threads I post get read by one person or a hundred, but as a writer, I admit to liking to see that something I've put a lot of time and effort into is appreciated.

However, I don't post just for the sake of easing my boredom. I post because I love to write and I always have loved to write and I post because I have ideas for storylines that will add some nuance to my characters. The tags and the reads and requests to join an RP are a bonus.

When I created Sarzonia and decided to RP with it, I decided to think about how I would run a country. It turns out that Sarzonia might be my manifestation of how I would run the United States (though I doubt Congress would approve of a 5,000 ship navy), but I try to RP Sarzonia as I would run a real country.

Does any of the above make me a great RP'er? I don't know. But as long as you put some thought and some effort into RPing, you and the people you RP with will be better off.
