(Nearly) Bloodless Democratic Revolution in Descolada

Descolada

OOC> A few OOC notes about the scale ... Descolada is reasonably large, but not huge. It's quite heavily populated, especially Descolada Island itself. The biggest island is about the size of Hispaniola. Of its population of 90 million (1/2 of its IRL NS population), almost a third live on Descolada Island itself. The small labelled cities are between 500,000 and 2 million, the large labelled cities are larger than two million. The black blobs are oil deposits.

Descolada City:

The people cheered as the massive statue of the hated Enrico ben Salazar, their dictator for the last thirty-seven years was toppled. It had been the culmination of five years since the Descoladan Democratic Party had allied with the Worker's Federated Council and the United Descoladan People's Front. Hopefully this would mean a new era of prosperity and freedom for the people of Descolada.

Multi-Party election ... the idea was just too intoxicating to resist. The people were charged with hopes of finally letting the ghost of Neo-Fascism go and allowing their lives to blossom. Those in the southern islands especially would be glad, as their mostly agricultural economies did not mix as well with the heavily industrial economy of the north, especially Descolada Island, with its huge iron ore and anthracite deposits.

Surely foreign investors would be interested in this place? Surely democratic nations from outside Descolada would render it aid? It was a time of great hope and fear for the people. After all, Descolada also possessed large unexplored oil deposits.

The President was finishing his daily briefing when an aide brought up the subject of this coup.

"Who are these people?" Mike Kowalski asked.

"Descoladans, sir. They're a fairly small republic that broke free of its brutal regieme." the aide said.

"And why do we care?"

"Because they just got rid of tyrants."

"Well now, since you like them so much, you're their new ambassador."

"Aw crap!" the aide screamed in anguish.

OOC> The climate in Descolada is VERY nice, warm and dry. In the summer, the highs are usually 25-30 C and the winters usually have highs of 15-20 C. Frost is virtually unknown. Hence the huge number of summer retreats.

To: The Government of Crazed Marines
From: The Democratic Republic of Descolada

We accept your ambassador and will adapt one of Salazar's summer retreats to make an embassy ... they're quite grand and comfortable buildings. The Caudillo was quite willing to spend billions of dollars of our money on his own grandiose plans.

Secret IC: Chancellor Ingram sat at his desk, General Richter sat across from him, they were discussing the situation within Descolada and the nation itself.

"They have a lot of nice resources scattered about their islands," mentioned Richter as he went over a copy of the map, "They would serve the world much better in our Republic's hands though."

"That is true, General, but how could we get them without arising too much opposition against us?" asked Ingram, "We can't just walk in and take it, people would fight back."

"If we were to eliminate the current leader and incite revolution, it would allow us to act as 'peacemakers' and then take what we want," explained the General, "We just send a special forces team or two in and let the country tear itself apart."

"I like that plan," saad the Chancellor, "Get on it and make sure it's done as soon as possible."

"Yes Sir."

Communication to Ambassador Klinten:
The climate is generally comparable to that of California. Ethnically, the population is mixed. Generally speaking, a 'Latin' is anyone who speaks a Romance language (and Greeks), an 'Anglo' is anyone who speaks a Germanic language and a 'Slav' is, well, you know. The official languages are Portuguese and English. English is generally favored in the south and Portuguese to the north, although most on Descolada Island itself are bilingual.

IC:

President Vasco da Real awoke from his afternoon siesta. He enjoyed the ability to sleep peacefully, without fear of Salazar's bogeymen killing him in his sleep. However, he had been fortunate in that the regular army had risen in support of the democratic revolution. He would have to confer with his allies in the Federated Worker's Council and the United Descoladan People's Front in order to arrange a final compromise.

The DDP was the largest of the resistance organizations to Salazar's one-man rule and was based on Descolada Island itself. The FWC was the most powerful near the city of New Porto and the UDPF was the most powerful in and around Attica Bay. Da Real had always considered it strange that a liberal democratic party like his would end up aligned with a populist union movement and a Marxist democratic party, but they all had the same ultimate goal. Freedom.

There were divisions in Descolada, but the people had grown used to dealing with each other over the years. They had much work to do together to expand Descolada's economy and build a new future for their nation.
